Ok - I'm ready for the onslaught here...

But I loveeee the name Ithaca. Our surname is very common, one syllable.

Thoughts?

Wellthatwassilly · 11/02/2021 15:50

People choosing silly names for their kids need to remember the kids will grow up into teens/adults

Dont be so selfish

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 11/02/2021 15:50

Depends where you live too. In some accents it will sound like I-thick-a

All in all, it's not a name I'd saddle a child with, no.

Wolfiefan · 11/02/2021 15:49

Really don’t like it. But then I hate place names used for people.

strawberriesontheNeva · 11/02/2021 15:46

It's a bit ridiculous but each to their own....

PattyPan · 11/02/2021 15:46

Is it where she was conceived? Confused I’ve never heard it as a name before, only a place and I think there are much nicer Greek or mythological names out there. Penelope? Even Iona after the Ionian Sea has a nicer sound.

As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.

Hope your road is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you enter harbors you’re seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and go on learning from their scholars.

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.

Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you wouldn't have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you’ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.

notalwaysalondoner · 11/02/2021 15:42

It’s a bit out there but very pretty sounds.

BlibBlabBlob · 11/02/2021 15:40

@WonkyCactus Ithaca Smithica Grin

@Amelia786 I would assume that your daughter was conceived in Ithaca with that name. And I personally think that naming your kid after the place you shagged in to create them is bleurgh.

Also, she will spend a lifetime having to explain her name to people and spelling it out over the phone EVERY.SINGLE.TIME.

If you want my honest opinion, it's a no.

Beamur · 11/02/2021 15:35

It's a very pretty island.
But it is difficult to say with a lisp. An abbreviation to Iffy wouldn't be great either.
I want to like it, but think it has a few drawbacks.

WonkyCactus · 11/02/2021 15:34

Is that common one syllable surname Smith? If so I wouldn't choose Ithaca.
If not, you might get away with it.

ladycarlotta · 11/02/2021 15:32

I like the sentiment and association with the Odyssey - Ithaca is the home Odysseus is trying to return to - but I'd personally choose it for a middle name not a first name. It's quite a thing to have to carry.

121hugsneeded · 11/02/2021 15:32

Ok - covering a long shot here - but what if your child has a lisp ? Will people think she's called Jessica ?

Overdoor · 11/02/2021 15:32

@spookycookies

There are so many beautiful names out there. Why chose a word that isn't a name. IT's NOT A NAME
Well, it's as much a name as Paris or Brooklyn and the like.

Admittedly, I hate placename names, and Ithaca is where Cornell (Ivy League university) is to me, and an averagely joyless US college town with a loooong, grim winter.

Sausagedog1 · 11/02/2021 15:27

I really like it! I would just think 'oh that's unusual but very nice' and never give it another thought.
If you like it use it!

Blackdog19 · 11/02/2021 15:27

I quite like it!

Antmiddletonswife · 11/02/2021 15:26

It sounds very much like Agatha - why not choose a name that has a history?

Aquamarine1029 · 11/02/2021 15:25

I'm sorry, it's a really ugly name for a person.

spookycookies · 11/02/2021 15:23

SEE123 · 11/02/2021 15:21

@Peaseblossom22

If you want Greek with an I what about Ianthe or Iolanthe or Ilithya much prettier than Ithaca which is a place name.
@Peaseblossom22 while Ilithya may look pretty, it's also used to call a girl stupid. Not the greatest name meaning.

Sorry OP, not crazy about Ithaca.

DimidDavilby · 11/02/2021 15:19

I like it

BrutusMcDogface · 11/02/2021 15:19

It sounds a bit like Jessica with a lisp...

Love the above suggestion of Ianthe.

sadpapercourtesan · 11/02/2021 15:18

It's bloody awful as a name. Sounds like someone mispronouncing Jessica. And she will get called Iffy.

I've been to Ithaca, it's beautiful, and I love the poem "Ithaca" by Contstantine Cavafy as well - but as a girl's name, it's ghastly.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 11/02/2021 15:17

I think it's a nice sound. I don't think it'd be for me, but of you like it, it's not offensive or anything. Just unusual.

(But also, give the 'th' thing a bit of thought - I have a friend whose newborn daughter is Martha, only my friend can't pronounce the 'th' sound Confused

pooopypants · 11/02/2021 15:15

Sounds a bit like a skin condition to me but it could work

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/02/2021 15:13

I've never heard this before. I like it.
