Éamonn

What do you think of the name Éamonn? Does it conjure up unwanted thoughts of Éamonn Holmes?

I also love Oisín, but it's off limits as it's the name of my nephew, whom I'm very close to. Any other good, vowely Irish names in a similar vein?

It really does conjure those thoughts, and also de Valera, which is worse. Don’t like it but don’t absolutely hate it.

Owen, Rory, Conal? I like Blaise. Also think Patrick is mega underused right now.

Shampops · 09/02/2021 15:56

It's not going to make Irish people think of Mr Holmes but it probably will be most non-Irish people's first thought. Not a huge deal though.

I like Ultan as it's not too common and the spelling isn't going to fox anyone. Ultan Dillane is kind of cool.

PurpleOnion · 09/02/2021 15:34

Thank you for the feedback Grin

Yes, I was wondering whether it is old mannish. Not too bothered by that though as we're not in Ireland. Glad it doesn't seem to call to mind Holmes for everyone (DH was sure that it would but maybe that's the result of him watching too much crap television in lockdown).

Iarlaith/Iarla and Éanna are lovely. Also really like Aodh. Definitely adding those to my list. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

@MrsHookey

Saorse?
If you mean Saoirse, that's a girl's name. Or do you mean Seóirse?

Saorse?
Do you mean Saoirse? The girls name?
BerylSilverstone · 09/02/2021 12:31

Euan? X

MrsHookey · 09/02/2021 12:29

Saorse?

JackieWeaverIsTheAuthority · 09/02/2021 11:46

I’m in NI and know a few Éamons so it doesn’t conjure up thoughts of Holmes or De Valera at all. It’s just another name. One of the Éamons is a teen.

ElspethFlashman · 09/02/2021 11:38

You just spell it Iarla.

I don't know many people who still use the older way. Know a few Iarlas though. It's become very popular.

Stonehopper · 09/02/2021 11:26

@DeeThree, DS was nearly Iarla. I love that name, but as we were living in England at the time, we thought Iarfhlaith might blow people's minds.

Stonehopper · 09/02/2021 11:25

@JollyGreenGiantess

I know someone who spells it ‘Amen’.
Gosh, there's something kind of annoying about that. Grin
DeeThree · 09/02/2021 11:19

Personally I don't like Éamonn, but if you do then go for it.
Other suggestions:
Aodh (pronounced A , can't get much more vowely)
Aidan
Aodhán
Odhrán
Éanna
Enda
Ultan
Uinseann
Iarfhlaith (although this is hard even for some Irish people!)

JollyGreenGiantess · 09/02/2021 11:19

I know someone who spells it ‘Amen’.

ElspethFlashman · 09/02/2021 10:08

Eanna is nicer.

Eamon is not really used for kids in Ireland any more tbh. I don't know anyone under 50 that has it. That said, it's easy to pronounce. Though I know someone whose nickname is "Amy" which may put a person off. They don't seem to mind though!

MerryChristmasToYou · 09/02/2021 10:06

Does it conjure up unwanted thoughts of Éamonn Holmes?
Yes.

Stonehopper · 09/02/2021 09:33

Sorry can't be bothered with the fadas or caps after weeks of homeschooling

I hear you. Grin

I just think of Holmes. Horrible little man....

ShoppingBasket · 09/02/2021 08:42

No, it makes me think of my cousin Confused. If someone said Eamonn to me I wouldn't think of DeValera automatically.
Sean, cian, conor, eoin/eoghan, Rian, tadhg, kieran, darragh, ruairi, daithi, Lorcan, Fionn.

It also depends on where you live OP, if in Ireland most are grand although people here even struggle with Tadhg. If elsewhere, you need to consider the spelling so he doesn't have a lifelong explanation of his name!

WineInTheWillows · 09/02/2021 08:25

Holmes. Immediately.

BigPaperBag · 09/02/2021 08:25

Horrible names.

Stonehopper · 09/02/2021 08:22

@Gooseysgirl

It was on our list for DS but didn't use it in the end... my granny was not a fan of Dev and would have turned in her grave 😄

Other suggestions..

Lorcan
Aidan
Eoin or Eoghan
Colm/Colum
Colman or Colmán
Cillian or Killian
Fiachra
Fionn or Fionnán
Seán
Senan
Ronan or Rónán
Tiernan
Cian or Kian

Exactly! Major political implications! You might as well call your baby Fianna Fáil Lemass -Lynch-Haughey-Reynolds-Cowen O’Sullivan. Grin

I love the name Éamonn too. 😓

MrsHookey · 09/02/2021 08:16

Finbar? Eunan?
