So I had very mixed reviews about Dexter and Stanley

So how do you feel about Toby?

I'm really struggling to find any others my OH will even consider

Naming a baby is so hard 😢

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Personally I prefer Toby to Stanley and Dexter but I agree with the poster above, my opinion is irrelevant.
You have to say this name over and over again and it will be the label that is on your little squidgy baby. Choose the one you love the most and don't let posters put you off.
They are all completely normal acceptable names for a child today that won't cause him any problems. I know how you feel as I stressed and stressed about it and I think I listened to others opinions too much.

As someone who posts a lot on these threads... It doesn't matter what we think. Personally, I don't like Toby. Why? No reason at all, it just doesn't do it for me. I could amuse myself trying to write a witty sentence about what I don't like about it, but that's just me playing at being an art critic. A little boy called Toby, Dexter or Stanley will have no issues with his name throughout his life - they are all normal, well-used names.

I really dislike Toby.
Dexter is the best of the three imo.

HenriettaHeffalump · 05/02/2021 09:10

Toby is my favourite of the three. It's very nice.

Chilldonaldchill · 05/02/2021 09:08

I love Toby.
I don't dislike Stanley but it just merges into the myriad of Arthur, Alfie, Ronnie type old-man names that are so common right now.
I dislike Dexter personally. It feels quite down-market along with many of the other surname type names.

LittleRa · 05/02/2021 09:07

I like Toby, and prefer it of the three.

TheVanguardSix · 05/02/2021 09:06

Dexter, would be my choice.

FluffyEggsontoast · 05/02/2021 09:04

I like Toby but I also like Stanley and Dexter

KirstenBlest · 05/02/2021 09:04

Toby is nice, fairly safe, not likely to be considered downmarket etc.

Dexter - is it a bit of a naughty boy's name? Not keen on Dex.

Stanley - ok but slightly unaspirational.

Bear in mind that it needs to go with the surname, and that you are naming a person not a baby. Will you still like the first name in x years' time?

JemimaTiggywinkle · 05/02/2021 08:54

Toby is nice.
The thing is, not everyone is going to like the same names. The important thing is you and DH like it.
On MN people can give an honest (brutal) opinion... in real life, once you’ve named the baby no-one’s going to tell you how much they hate the name you’ve picked. And once that’s the baby’s name it will grow on people anyway.

finallychangedmyusername · 05/02/2021 08:52

I'm not a fan of Dexter, nor Stanley (sorry) but really like Toby (and Tobias, if that might be an option for you?)

AaronPurr · 05/02/2021 08:51

I Love Toby and Tobias.

Naming a new person is indeed tricky, but your OH should also be helping to give suggestions rather than just dismissing all the names you suggest.

EdgeOfACoin · 05/02/2021 08:51

Toby is nice.
