With names like Alma and Vera making a comeback, what about Gloria? Is it hideously dated?

I think it's a beautiful name. I don't think it would suit a baby though, it's got a kind of weighty feel.

AuntieStella · 04/02/2021 22:35

Personally I see it as old-fashioned in the wrong sort of way

But with less than a year until Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee, I think it's a name that could be very much of the moment

17caterpillars1mouse · 04/02/2021 22:28

Love it and Gloriana

NoCureForLove · 04/02/2021 13:08

I love it. See also Glory.

Sexnotgender · 04/02/2021 13:05

Love it. Does remind me of modern family though.

WagnerTheWehrWolf · 04/02/2021 13:04

I like it. Better than all the consumptive Victorian maiden names like Florence and Beatrice.

Chambored · 04/02/2021 12:40

I’d way prefer Gloria to Alma and Vera.
Plus there the fabulous Laura Branigan Gloria song.

stormelf · 04/02/2021 12:27

I taught a Glorija (pronounced Gloria) a few years ago and always thought the name sounded lovely. Not to my taste but its still a really beautiful name and I wouldn't bat an eyelid if someone were to name their baby Gloria

Positivevibesonlyplease · 04/02/2021 12:21

It’s a good name, but every time I hear it, I want to shout, ‘Jay’ in a S. American accent. It’s certainly a strong and powerful name. Are you prepared for everyone to sing her the 80s song, Gloria? Or maybe it’s just me and my age x

Evenstar · 04/02/2021 12:08

I have a cousin called Gloria in her 70’s, I think it might still be too recent to be back in fashion.

Zarinea · 04/02/2021 12:06

LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

I don't think it's ever been popular enough for it to be associated with a particular era.

The only one I know is very religious though. Her sister is Hallelujah (known as Lu) which is a bit much...

Talith · 04/02/2021 11:55

I love it and also Sylvia.

LovelyBranches · 04/02/2021 11:54

I met a young mum at a baby group and her name was Gloria and I was instantly struck by how nice her name is.

It’s bold and pretty out there, but it’s lovely too

Jemimapuddleduk · 04/02/2021 11:51

I absolutely love Gloria and was on my list. There is no way I could have persuaded DH.

Positivevibesonlyplease · 03/02/2021 22:53

Just reminds me of ‘Modern Family.’

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/02/2021 22:45

I want to love Gloria, but it still just feels too dated to me. What about similar Sylvia - I think that will make a big comeback soon (as it has the popular V sound as well as the -ia ending)

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/02/2021 21:13

I think it's beautiful. Far more attractive than, say, Olive or Ivy which seem always to be suggested on these threads

WoodpileHouse · 03/02/2021 21:09

Not keen.
How about Joy, Olive, Betsy?

bourbonne · 03/02/2021 21:08

Dislike, but I would have said the same about most of the old-lady names that have come back. So if I'm anything to go by, it's the next big hit!

GoryGilmore · 03/02/2021 21:07

I have close relatives called Gloria and Vera. Lovely, lovely people but their names are dreadful. Very dated.

Namechange600 · 03/02/2021 21:06

I really like it - strong and feminine - I agree it’s due a comeback

EdgeOfACoin · 03/02/2021 21:05

I know an American woman in her 20s who has a contemporary named Gloria. She goes by the nn Glo.

Marmite27 · 03/02/2021 20:50

Every time I sing it in church I think how lovely it is. However my daughters are not called Gloria.

Skipsurvey · 03/02/2021 20:48

cute, but unsure

ILoveStickers · 03/02/2021 20:46

When I was watching that programme about Gloria Steinem recently, I thought how cool Gloria was. Maybe it'll come back round, but I'm not brave enough yet!
