Thoughts on the name Alma?

We’ve been very stuck choosing a girls name we agree on and recently came across the name Alma. I haven’t really heard it before but I’m aware it’s an old fashioned name- which doesn’t bother me so much.
Is it a nice name? What are some similar names to this? Thanks!!

I love it!

You lucky lucky thing.

Yes I know it was Almaz but it's what comes to mind.

I think no too, sorry. Alma screams Coronation St to me. Love Alba though.

Honeyroar · 28/01/2021 22:30

It makes me think of Alma from Coronation st and Pont de l’alma in Paris. I don’t dislike it as a name.

I love the name Alma. I read somewhere that it means kindness. As it happens, a long time ago, I knew an elderly lady with this name. She was kind. Smile

I really like it but it does remind me of Alma in Coronation Street (she was kind of a Wetherfield version of Joan Collins)

It's okay, maybe a bit too dated for my personal taste (although weirdly I like the similarly old-fashioned Ada, Freda and Cora). How about Alva? It feels a bit more contemporary to me than Alma (Alva is quite popular/well used in other parts of Europe).

Awful.

.... Vivienne, Zara, Zelda...

FoggyDay58 · 28/01/2021 22:27

Its the most popular girls' name in Denmark and was a character in The Queens Gambit. Headed for a rise in popularity here too, I reckon!

Santaiscovidfree · 28/01/2021 22:27

I had an aunt Alma. Never tempted to use it for my dd's!! Tbf it isn't the worst old lady name doing the rounds though...

partyatthepalace · 28/01/2021 22:27

It just makes me think ageing barmaid... so I wouldn’t.

I like it but Coronation Street will come up a lot with anyone around 35+.

LadyMinerva · 28/01/2021 22:25

As long as you are prepared for people to call her Llama. Bullies, people who find English a bit more difficult to grasp and those just grazing their eyes over words and not reading properly.

What about Alba instead? It's close but different enough.

LilyE1234 · 28/01/2021 22:25

Alba?

Swingometer · 28/01/2021 22:21

Unfortunately I can only think of Coronation Street and a pub called the Alma in my home town

There is nothing wrong with it really but I wouldn't be able to get past the above associations

How about Nora or Ada?
