Thoughts on the name Alma?

We’ve been very stuck choosing a girls name we agree on and recently came across the name Alma. I haven’t really heard it before but I’m aware it’s an old fashioned name- which doesn’t bother me so much.
Is it a nice name? What are some similar names to this? Thanks!!

Definitely due a resurgence

CadhlaWren · 18/02/2022 11:33

I disagree with people here. I think it’s coming back and if you choose it now you’ll be at the beginning of the curve. I recently met a baby with the name Alma and it fit perfectly. I also know an Alma in her mid twenties and she’s started getting more compliments on her name lately.

Alma from Corrie is ages ago. Kids won’t have a clue.

Same as @Swingometer, maybe we live in the same town.

Alba is Scotland

@Penvelopey

Over a year on. Did you go for it OP?
I want to know too! Considering the name Alma myself, I think it's sweet and no-one will remember her in Corrie in a few years.
Cbeebiesrehab · 16/02/2022 12:28

Fun fact: the nan (Abuela) in Encanto is called Alma.

I like it.

PiperPosey · 16/02/2022 08:42

Personally I think it would make a sweet middle name. But first name.. Nah... I love older names, but this one doesn't grab me.

ALMAAAAA!

Fred Flintstone

That was Wilma

I think it's a lovely name.
Reminds me of Alma Mahler Gropius Werfel, whose astonishing life and collection of brilliant husbands is well worth reading about.

CovidCorvid · 16/02/2022 07:21

I frequently drive past a pub called The Alma. I don’t really like it as a name.

midsomermurderess · 16/02/2022 07:19

I think Coronation Street as a reference must be dwindling fast. Is a person named Alma in 2022 going to be seen through that lens? It's beautiful, 'soul'. This site is full of cultural illiterates. You don't need to be led by them.

CheshireSplat · 16/02/2022 05:11

It's not normal. (Sorry, TV reference, couldn't resist.)

Fleur405 · 16/02/2022 05:01

I actually really like it!

Lampyshady · 15/02/2022 22:38

Embla or Althea?

WeasilyPleased · 15/02/2022 22:25

I know the loveliest woman called Alma. Artistic, beautiful, warm. She's Peruvian so I always think more exotic than frumpy barmaid!

17caterpillars1mouse · 15/02/2022 21:35

I like it. The coronation Street reference will mean nothing to anybody 25 and under so that wouldn't even be a consideration for me.

It fits in with the current trend for girls names ending in an a, but is something a little different. It's well known enough not the be weird but unusual enough that there shouldn't be another in her class (never say never).

It's a lovely choice

Redsquirrel5 · 15/02/2022 21:07

We have a neighbour called Alma, lovely, kind-hearted person.i have never met another.

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 15/02/2022 20:23

Love it ❤️

UserBotLurking9to5 · 15/02/2022 16:36

Its 9k.
Prefer Elma

HorrocksToThem · 15/02/2022 16:34

Made me think of the song Almaz you lucky, lucky thing. It's ok, and different enough for there not to be 2 in a class.

Bournetilly · 15/02/2022 16:24

I LOVE it, such a nice name. I don’t like Alba though.

LauEli · 29/01/2021 23:55

Not a babies name

Megalala · 29/01/2021 17:19

I love Alma, it was the name I wanted for ages but it didn't quite sound right with our surname.

We have a Delilah instead Smile

PorkPieForStarters · 29/01/2021 17:18

I love it and would use it for a name, it sounds lovely and soft and warm!

It means "soul" in Spanish if you'd like it to have more meaning.

ps - we don't all watch Corrie so that definitely didn't spring to my mind, but Alma left the street 20 years ago so it's unlikely to be a reference among young people anyway Smile

emmathedilemma · 29/01/2021 17:10

I don't watch Coronation Street so don't have that association. I quite like it.
