Do you ‘love’ your boys name?

Due a boy in ten weeks and super excited. Before we knew the sex we talked a lot about names and fixed on a girl name quite quickly and I absolutely loved it. I felt excited to use it and tell people.
Things got tricker when we found out he was a boy as I just find boys names so ‘blah’. It’s seems from this board that lots of people have also struggled with boys names. I want something that is not crazy or eyebrow raising but equally not too traditional and (in my opinion) boring. There are hundreds of girls names in this category but so few boys ones. When people ask for suggestions of this type of name the same ones are always suggested.
Anyway, we have picked a name and I do really like it, as does DH. We have been calling him by his name at home for weeks and have gotten used to it. I just can’t shake this feeling that I like it but don’t ‘love’ it.

Is this normal? Will I love it when he arrives and it become associated with my little boy? Or should I be rethinking?

Did you ‘love’ the name you picked or have picked for your boy?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I really struggled with boy names but went with Alexander and I love it now. I definitely lean towards more classic names than modern though. And one with lots of nicknames is always good.

Roselilly36 · 28/01/2021 18:50

I love my boys names, they are 19 & nearly 18 now, their names really suit them, I have always been happy with the names we chose.

diddlediddle · 28/01/2021 18:46

I love my DSs name, but it's the only boys name I do love so if I had another that would be tricky. If you like the name I think that's plenty good enough, when he's born it will become him and you'll love him and it.

Sausagedog1 · 28/01/2021 18:44

I wouldn't say I love their names. In fact I often wish I had called DS2 something different.
The names I 'love' change all the time though, I am very fickle in that way so I think that would have been the case for most names.
Also I have to compromise with DH who has different taste.
I think my issue is the names I would truly LOVE would be inappropriate for a man or just too unwearable in general.

@SecretWitch

My sons’s name is Spencer. We love it but he wishes we gave him a harder name like “Spike” 😂
Ha, one of my ds is a variant of Joseph and is very annoyed that we didn't call him Jake. My middle child prefers his middle name and my youngest refuses to answer to anything but the short version of his first name and declares his middle name "not mine". It's a good thing DH and I love the names we've used because I don't think the children we named agree!
TheVanguardSix · 28/01/2021 17:34

Love my boys’ names! DS’s name was one I appreciated but didn’t have that instant I LOVE IT thrill for it. But nearly 11 years on, I absolutely love DD’s name. It has such a beautiful meaning and it suits her down to the ground. Meaning is very important.

SecretWitch · 28/01/2021 17:33

PearsandPartridge · 28/01/2021 17:31

Absolutely LOVE my DSs name. I would have struggled with a girl name since as soon I saw his 12 week UH picture I knew he was a boy and what I would call him. Luckily DH was fully on board too! Can't imagine him being called anything else - of course I'm sure that's true for most of the kids haha! Good luck OP, oh to be picking baby names again 🥰

BertieBotts · 28/01/2021 17:31

How funny, I nearly said Jude is the name I always think I should have called DS1, but I know XP would have said it was a girls' name!

It would have suited him much more than his actual name, IMO.

Libmama · 28/01/2021 17:29

I love DS1’s name. It’s my favourite boys name ever. DP chose DS2’s name and whilst I liked it I didn’t love it like DS1’s. I worried about it for ages but actually when he arrived it suited him and we never call him it now anyway. He’s always his nickname I’m not even entirely sure he’d know what his real name was if you asked him!!

MaverickDanger · 28/01/2021 17:28

I absolutely love our DS’ name. To the point where I was terrified that someone would use it before he was born.

It’s just in the top 400 I think, so not sure why I thought someone would pick it! Not come across any, and both my parents are teachers & haven’t come across one in 40+ years of teaching.

JaneNorman · 28/01/2021 17:27

I love DSs name but only on him. Not a fan when I hear it on others! Which is pretty funny as it’s a name that’s not hugely popular on here!

user686233 · 28/01/2021 17:24

Nope, I had the exact opposite experience. Girls names often sound bland or too frilly and there are very few that appeal to me.

LulusMiniEgg · 28/01/2021 17:22

My son is called Jude too @Cbeebiesrehab and I LOVE it! Not too popular but not too out there either.
I was quite glad when our second was a DD so I didn’t have to choose our second boys name as I didn’t love it as much as Jude or our DD’s name.

Himawarigirl · 28/01/2021 17:21

I know exactly what you mean, there is far less between traditional and crazy with boys names. We went into having our first boy with a list of four names I think, although one was more of a favourite for me. Even so I wouldn’t say I loved it the way I thought my daughter’s name was perfect. But once he was here it was his name and we love it. Felt the same again with our second boy. So the feeling definitely came once they were here and we were using their names.

OwlLovesTea · 28/01/2021 17:06

I do. I liked the one syllable style names like ben, max, sam but they were all so popular. Found a name that is more unusual for his generation than mine but not dated. He soundsso obilviously this name

BertieBotts · 28/01/2021 17:06

YY OP I feel the same about boys' names.

There are a few that I really love but DH didn't agree.

I do love DS2's name now he is here :) It just suits him so much and even though it's a fairly "ordinary" name I love it and it's very cute but also sensible enough.

DS1 I named when I was younger and I don't love his name as much. It still suits him and I don't hate it or anything.

Shmithecat2 · 28/01/2021 17:05

No, I don't love ds' name. But it was the only one that DH loved that I didn't hate. I'm still not keen on it 5 years on.

maggiemuff · 28/01/2021 17:04

I love my boys names and if I ever had another I even know what they will be called. Although neither were given a name straight away, I just couldn't decide so it took about a week.

Whatsyourflava · 28/01/2021 17:03

I think you can find a sweet spot with boy names. So...You're looking for a name that's familiar, not too popular but not crazy @LuckyFlashhow
Ok well obviously first step is to avoid all the names in the official ONS top 100 of course as they'll be too common for you.

How about something like:

Laurence
Tristan
Seth
Aubrey
Nathan
Miles
Casper
Austin
Winston
Walter
Otto
Griffin

RedRec · 28/01/2021 17:02

Yes, still absolutely love it. And he is 19.

Seriouslymole · 28/01/2021 16:58

No, I don't sadly. But he's 12 now and it's a bit late. I've often regretted calling him it and wished we'd chosen something else.

Puffalicious · 28/01/2021 16:46

I can't be doing with all this ' all boy's names are blah' business on MN, as if girls' names are so much better! What is it?

I didn't know the sex of all 3 of mine, who turned out to be all boys. Girl's names were the issue for me- there are so many fabulous boy's names. I love all 3 of mine still- I think I probably love DS2's the best of all- but mine are all very Scottish names ( imp to me) and none of them had someone of the same name all through primary, with only DC3 having one other at secondary.

Cbeebiesrehab · 28/01/2021 16:40

My son is called Jude and I love his name. It wasn’t the name we originally had picked but I just knew the name we had (Rowan) just wasn’t right. As soon as we decided on Jude I knew it was the right name!

RealisticSketch · 28/01/2021 16:36

Had exactly this predicament. In the end the name was chosen by making a list and crossing them out until we had one left. It suits him, had become his own, but the name itself was never a fall in love with one.
