If you had to give your baby boy an aristocratic /posh name, what would it be?

Georgie. I've loved it ever since I read 'The Amazing Mr Blunden' as a child.

Bisquiteen · 23/01/2021 16:21

Can I just ask why people are trying to find so-called 'posh' names for their offspring? Is it because you hope they'll get into Oxbridge if they are called Horatio or that they'll land a top job in the city solely by virtue of their name being Ptolemy? Got to say that is one of the ugliest names I've ever heard 😧Can a name make this much difference to a child's future? Do you have to add in private education and elocution lessons too? Dress them in Mini Boden at all times? Buy them their first pony whilst they are still in utero?

I am genuinely interested how this all works, or indeed, if it works at all. My own children are named after older relatives and I have to confess that I didn't torture myself over whether or not they would be successful social climbers as a result. Maybe I am in the minority here and have let poor Kylie and Wayne down?

I think most aristocratic boys are called standard trad names like William, George, Henry, Arthur, Hugh blah blah

4amWitchingHour · 23/01/2021 16:06

Earnest. Definitely the best name Grin

OhMsBeliever · 23/01/2021 15:57

@FlyingSquid yes, The Dark Is Rising. It is Barnabas in the book but our surname begins with S and it sounded too hissy to me so I used Barnaby instead. He's only ever called Barney anyway, so I do sometimes wish I'd used Barnabas.

BlackCatShadow · 23/01/2021 15:01

I knew a Ffarquhar but he wasn't posh. I would definitely call my fictional posh baby Ffarquhar though.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2021 14:55

I really wanted Thaddeus and Balthazar for the twins

Balthazar is a great name. I'd like quads named Balthazar, Methuselah, Nebuchadnezzar and Magnum, but you'd probably get Social Services assuming you were rather too fond of the sauce to be in charge of children Grin

Especially as my married surname essentially means tramp

Am I the only one who is desperate to know what it is?!

Vagrant
Hobo
Bum
Vagabond
Downer-Nowt
Panhandler
King-o'-The-Road
Knight-Wanderer

Or did you mean tramp as a verb - so something like Amble or Trudge?

I was amused when I first heard of the dynamic, trendy New Jersey city pronounced 'huh-BOW-kuhn'. I read it before I heard anybody say it and couldn't for the life of me imagine why somebody would name an entire city in honour of a hobo called Ken!

Sportsnight · 23/01/2021 13:53

I think Hugo is the only one I could really embrace with enthusiasm.

titchy · 23/01/2021 13:18

Is it bad to admit that I LOVE LOVE LOVE all of these names! Dh didn't sadly so we compromised on 'classic English', but I'd love to have had a Bartholomew (Barty) and a Meredith (Merry).

jambeforeclottedcream · 23/01/2021 13:16

Sebastian
Percival Percy
Charles
Rupert
Ralph/ Rafe

Buttybach · 23/01/2021 13:09

Rollo!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/01/2021 13:09

John, David or Toby.

I did actually know a Peregrine when I was younger. He detested it and always went by Perry

Buttybach · 23/01/2021 13:07

Carruthers was my maiden name and it's always the name of a bloody butler!
I think its quite posh

Bisquiteen · 23/01/2021 12:58

I’m loving this thread. It’s cracking me up 😂 The thought of all those little Tarquins and St Johns running out of primary school into the loving arms of parents, Ryan and Jade is hilarious. Sorry if it’s not meant to be funny but prole drift is always funny 😳

My brain has completely short-circuited, having read Crispin and Ptolemy and smooshed them together, so I've now got Crispian St Peters going around in my head, singing "Hey, come on, babe, Ptolemy - I'm the Pied Piper" Grin

Youngsters: ask your grandparents....

Catty1720 · 23/01/2021 10:52

Ah I see thank you, I never knew that

Just go with a name you like my only personal rules when picking my DC names is how will it sound when they are an adult. And will it cause them problems in schools/interviews when someone can’t pronounce it. Even my name I’ve always had ‘is that with a c or a k’
