Help me with a boys name...

Still agonising over the name for ds4. I’ve used up all my favourite names on the older three!!

Here goes - we decided on Theo, short for Theodore, dh just changed his mind and pitched Wilbur, which I think is lovely and I agreed to it yesterday but now I’m really not sure.

I like Arthur which has been strongly vetoed by dh. I also like Atticus and Otto both of which Mumsnet has already advised against.

I think I’m looking for a name that isn’t particularly common but also not so unusual that it’s not actually a name!

Please help!

Also, the name Otto is lovely ☺️
I'd agree on Theo that it's very cute but seems to be increasing in popularity, just thinking of some friends I know who have called their little ones that.
I also see a lot of people suggesting Otis as an unusual name on different posts but in the past year I've known 2 babies called that so I don't ever think of it as being unusual now! X

ScottishLassie91 · 28/01/2021 23:16

@Mabelann I agree with you on that one, some of these threads are brutal lol but if you love it, don't be disheartened. I've seen loads of posts on here of people who say they hate the name and you think to yourself, it's really not bad or you love it!

Even my gran hated my brother's name that was picked out and said she wouldn't even call him it when he was born. It wasn't an uncommon name at all, just not her pick. That is his name now and she calls him it lol x

ParisJeTAime · 28/01/2021 21:54

That's really true op! BUT, I honestly don't think a huge proportion of people would object to Atticus or Otto? Even really straightforward names, like James and William, some people strongly object to on here Smile.

But I agree, if everyone says it's awful, maybe it is. But loads of people seem to like Otto and Atticus, so think you'd be fine there.

Mabelann · 28/01/2021 21:13

I guess the reason i listen to other people’s opinions is because naming a child feels like a big responsibility. You don’t want to give a child a name that a large percentage of the population would have a negative reaction to just because you happen to like it. The child has to live with that name.

@Mabelann my question would be why you've vetoed the names you liked based on Mumsnet? If they are names you like, it wouldn't bother me what others said. Everyone will always have an opinion

Enko · 26/01/2021 09:35

I like Wilbur Atticus and Otto sorry not much help

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 26/01/2021 03:17

Wilbur is brilliant, too many Arthurs also awful when people say Arfur. Again love Theo but loads where I live .Have always loved Otto & Hugo , Atticus is really out there , but I love it .

YukoandHiro · 26/01/2021 01:34

Rufus? I wanted this for a boy (we had a girl)

Buttterfly · 26/01/2021 01:28

Tyron

BorderlineHappy · 26/01/2021 01:25

I don't like Wilbur.

What are your other boys names like.
That way we can give suggest.

I have 5 boys myself,so I feel your struggle.

VenusClapTrap · 24/01/2021 18:45

I love Otto.

YoniAndGuy · 24/01/2021 17:53

Gosh I really don't like Wilbur. It's just not at all a nice sound and a bit - odd. So many other nicer names!

Atticus and Otto are both a bit try-hard.

Theo and Arthur pretty common, though both nice.

Jago
Sebastian
Rufus
Jonathan nn Jonty
Hugo
Rory

all good, as are many others also suggested above - and they have much more style to them than Wilbur.

Ijustlikedthename · 24/01/2021 09:15

I love Atticus!

Flymetothestars · 23/01/2021 11:16

I love Otto

Babydust13 · 23/01/2021 08:21

@sundowners 100% agree with that

Blursula · 23/01/2021 04:01

Wilbur is fantastic! Gets my vote. Love Atticus too. Congrats on your 4th boy - how lovely

NameChange84 · 22/01/2021 22:53

I’m in love with Augustine at the moment (Aw-Gust-in)

Left field but I also love Gustav Blush

I really like Otto!

Hugo? Tristan. Walter/Walt. Jethro. Rex. Solomon. Lance. Miles. Troy. Chester. Gideon.

Chilldonaldchill · 22/01/2021 22:33

Arthur and Theo - I like them both but they are insanely popular where I live.
Wilbur - I'm afraid I can't get past the pig which is a shame because otherwise it's nice.
Otto is great as is Atticus.

How about:
August (Gus)
Hugo
Rufus
Rupert
Benedict (Ned)
Edwin
Caspian
Caspar
Otis

OP if its 1 thing I've learnt this year its that mumsnet as a whole is a really poor reflection of society as a whole and its taste levels/opinions. on all boards you will always find a very outspoken, select few be it Coronavirus and insisting all schools shut stay shut for year or more... or here- where people love to shout hatred for a certain name. its not reality, its not a real cross section of your friends/family who may love a name some on here love to hate. I am choosing a name for DS in a few months that is very marmite on here with a lot always saying they hate it. The reality is so different. I believe some people HERE get a real kick out of saying the opposite to how they feel, or just spouting negativity and hatred of something just to wind people up.

They are behind a screen too- who knows what oddballs they are in reality! For what its worth, I really like both Atticus and Otto. Go with what you love.

ParisJeTAime · 22/01/2021 10:29

I don't really like Wilbur, but I love Wilfred.

Why did MN advise you against Atticus and Otto? They are perfect fine names. I love Otto! Not so keen on Atticus.

Arthur is lovely, but popular. Theo / Theodore is also really popular.

How about:

Rufus
Jasper
Gus (can be short for something if you prefer)
Otis
Hector
Hamish
Monty

Oneandabean · 22/01/2021 10:04

Both atticus and Otto were on our original boys list. I think they’re lovely names.
Arthur and Theo are so popular now. Wilbur is cute but for some reason I always think of a bulldog or something.

Bluesername · 22/01/2021 09:08

Wilbur is nice and makes a change from the popular Theo.

Amdone123 · 22/01/2021 08:57

Wilbur is adorable, and you dont hear of many. Arthur is too popular for me, and whilst I used to love Theo, I've gone of it.
I like Seth. Have always loved William, Dominic, Matthew.

mdh2020 · 22/01/2021 08:34

Guy and Sebastian.
Sorry, no other choices .

FluffyEggsontoast · 22/01/2021 08:12

If you like Theo and Otto how about Hugo or Milo. Arlo too but that may be too popular for you.

Names like Laurence, Winston, Tristan, Peter, Nathaniel, Ellis, Walter, Casper, Otis, Cole, Axel, Griffin, Angus, Seth... are all more unusual than a name like Theo or Arthur
