Ella?

Hi everyone, you've helped us so much with comments on various names. We have been swinging back and forth with long names shortened to nice nicknames, vetoed about 100 as I've discovered I'm truly fussy!! Now undecided between Emilia, Daisy and Ella. Family told me kindly that daisy is a cows name which has completely put us off despite it being a forerunner initially. Now I'm just thinking that simple is better! Ella, common yes, but pretty? I know that Amelia and Emilia which are our other options seem to be far more popular here than Ella, but what are your thoughts?

I love the name Ella, there a couple in my sons preschool. It is lovely. It's getting quite common now.

SendMeHome · 15/01/2021 13:15

I know one Ella, she’s now six. It’s a lovely name!

@buntingandstarcharts

Thank you everyone I'm SO pleasantly surprised by your comments everyone. I hate being so easily swayed by others opinions, I never felt I was with my sons name. It felt much easier. I was certainly bracing myself for more name-hate. Keep it coming ❤️ does anyone know heaps of Ellas?
I know 3 of my friends - unconnected have called their baby Ella in 2019, not sure if as popular in 2021 x
NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 15/01/2021 13:13

I much prefer Emilia to Ella.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 15/01/2021 13:12

Dislike Daisy - it's too cutesy sounding. The Emilia/Amelia confusion would bug me (despite Emilia's classy Shakespearean image). So that just leaves Ella - which is nice enough, just a little samey with a lot of the other names popular at the moment. Have you considered Stella or Estella, they are very pretty and would stand out a bit more?

AnnaFiveTowns · 15/01/2021 11:38

I think it's very common in my dd's year (15). Loads and loads of Ellas, Ellies, Evas, Evies, Eves. So I find it quite boring because it's so popular.

Sheleg · 15/01/2021 11:17

Ella is timeless and beautiful.

CuddlyAsACactus · 15/01/2021 10:31

Eleanor with nn Ella is lovely! She could also be Nora or Nell.

LovelyBranches · 15/01/2021 10:30

I have a friend who is Ella, her name on her birth certificate is Eleanor. This may be an option too?

PlantPotting · 15/01/2021 10:27

I love the simplicity of the name Ella it's beautiful. I find many names these days too frilly. And @Beamur is right , Ella peaked in popularity in 2003 and has been falling in numbers pretty much every year since then. It's much less used now and has dropped out the top 10. By the time the 2020 statistics are released it may have dropped out the top 20 the way the numbers are going

CuddlyAsACactus · 15/01/2021 10:08

How about Emma? Just, as you like Ella and Emilia? Not saying I don't like Ella, as I think it is a nice name, but just offering an alternative Smile

buntingandstarcharts · 15/01/2021 10:05

We are thinking Ella Daisy (middle name not double barrelled) so keeping both names in there. The dull olio kind of Ella - I can appreciate how people may think so, it's short and has gentle sounds, and not frilly or flouncy. But I think that's exactly why I love it. There's no excess harsh sounds like so many longer names have. I don't want the comments to stop though 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I love Ella and named my daughter it. My grandad had a sister called Ella and she was a lovely person and I loved the name. It took us a while to conceive and that was the only name we had! No boys names!

CuddlyAsACactus · 15/01/2021 09:58

I like Daisy the best, but they are all fine Smile

Ithinkim · 15/01/2021 09:56

I think it's really meh. It's fine. Just nothing else.

I've taught loads of them though so it does put you off if it's overused. Like Evie and Ava were. Okay names but too common.

I love Daisy though. And you could give her Daisy related presents Grin

MsTSwift · 15/01/2021 09:54

I find all the Ella / Amelia / Eve type names incredibly dull and over used. They are wall paper names now. I would think my baby deserved something more special than that. But we have very different tastes I think.

17caterpillars1mouse · 15/01/2021 09:53

Ella is my favourite from your names by far. Plus I know lots of little Daisy's and Emilia's but no Ella's (though statistically it is popular). I feel Ella is a versatile name and feels fresher than Daisy and Emilia too. Big fan of Ella

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 15/01/2021 09:50

If you love it go with it. My "dull as ditch water" named girl really suits it. She is anything but!

Beamur · 15/01/2021 09:50

I think Ella peaked in popularity a few years ago. I know several who are young teens but I don't know any littlies called it. It's a sweet name.

Lemonlemon88 · 15/01/2021 09:47

I know one baby Ella and a young Gabriella who is Ella. I would say most Ella's are teens now, Isabella and bella overtook it.

Could use as a nn for Emilia I think which I like best of your options.

20viona · 15/01/2021 09:39

Emilia best of that bunch. Ella is dull as dishwater.

Lovely name. And you can actually use it as a diminutive of other names like Isabella, Gabriella.

omg35 · 15/01/2021 09:20

Ella would be my top choice but OH hates it!

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 15/01/2021 09:18

I have an Ella. We had a girls name picked out for my second pregnancy and I found out (shockingly at the time) that we were having twins. We were really stuck for the second name. I'm ashamed to say I was reading a sweet valley high book (pure rubbish) and their was a character Ella.

Well she is nine now and is gorgeous and really suits her name. I wish I'd named her after Ella Fitzgerald or something but no it was from crap fiction!!
