Ella?

Hi everyone, you've helped us so much with comments on various names. We have been swinging back and forth with long names shortened to nice nicknames, vetoed about 100 as I've discovered I'm truly fussy!! Now undecided between Emilia, Daisy and Ella. Family told me kindly that daisy is a cows name which has completely put us off despite it being a forerunner initially. Now I'm just thinking that simple is better! Ella, common yes, but pretty? I know that Amelia and Emilia which are our other options seem to be far more popular here than Ella, but what are your thoughts?

How about Ellen if you want a name a little less popular but still sounds like Ella?

ClementineFox · 23/01/2021 18:38

I have an Ella, I was so worried about the popularity of the name that I called her Eleanor and made Ella a nn, but in the last four years I have only met one other kid called Ella! Countless kids called Luna and Seren though.

It’s a beautiful name, and I think Ella Daisy is a lovely choice.

SionnachRua · 21/01/2021 21:46

Ella is a nice name. Boring but nice.

PetraRabbit · 21/01/2021 21:30

I'm afraid I don't like Daisy- to say it sounds like a cow is rude but I do think it's a bit of a silly, girlie name for an adult.
Ella isn't my taste but it is elegant and I think most people will like it. I'd go with that one.
Emilia is a name I always loved but I feel Amelia is so popular that it takes away from Emilia.

Our nearly 11 month old daughter is called Daisy. She was going to be Ella then Evie, Daisy was an option but not the favourite. Then we saw her and she just is Daisy so went with that! Love buying clothing etc with daisies on.

WithASpider · 20/01/2021 20:45

My 6yo neice is Ella, so is my friend's 2yo. There's several at DS's primary. It's a bit bland for me, but nice enough.

pinkhousesarebest · 20/01/2021 20:34

I have an Elfie in my class which I think is the most beautiful name. Still like Ella and agree that they are mostly late teens early 20s now.

Cindie943811A · 20/01/2021 20:24

Ella has a lilt to it that I find very attractive.
Doesn’t have a dated feel to it either

buntingandstarcharts · 19/01/2021 10:44

@SemperIdem I like elodie but to me it sounds like 'Ella d' like a surname beginning with d unless of course you're French and say it properly on which case it is just beautiful. 💜

I find it so interesting to read these comments and pleased that mostly it's not given the absolute no-no. Also, I'm a teacher in a huge school and have come across only one other Ella in the last ten years, which was why I was asking whether it is popular where you guys are from. With regards to finding a longer name to shorten to Ella, I think I've found that I oooe the simplicity of it alone which is why many I guess find it dull?

Ella Daisy is beautiful @buntingandstarcharts

PoppiesinOctober · 19/01/2021 06:18

Boring.

SemperIdem · 18/01/2021 22:41

I don’t like Ella personally. It is quite bland and there are so many under 5 at the moment.

Elodie?

Fromthebirdsnest · 18/01/2021 21:41

Ella is gorgeous .. I have an Eleanor that we call Ellie, ella or nelly x

sleepingfox · 18/01/2021 20:23

I know 5 Ellas, and a Gabriella and Daniella both known as Ella. The youngest is 2, oldest is in her 20s. I think it’s nice as a shortening of a longer name, but I admit I find it quite dull on its own.

notalwaysalondoner · 18/01/2021 17:52

Ella and Emilia are both lovely but Ella much more unusual.

KellyanneConway · 18/01/2021 17:03

I love the name Ella it is my DD's name and she really suits it. I imagined a daughter who would be quiet, intelligent but confident and cool and she is fortunately exactly this. She is in her mid-20s now and there were no other Ella's in her primary and only one other in her secondary school. I like to think we started the trend for the name Grin

partyatthepalace · 16/01/2021 16:00

I like Emilia best cos it’s a proper name innit.
But I do see it’s v popular now.

I do like Ella, but prefer as a nickname for Eleanor or Eloise etc. Emma or Anna might also work?

Not Daisy! I am with your family on that, though it makes me think of an insignificant little flower not a cow.

Incyra · 16/01/2021 14:31

Ella is pretty, not keen on Ellie although I don't think it would get shortened to that.

EileenGC · 16/01/2021 10:44

Ella is lovely. Ella Daisy is a great combination. I don't know anyone called Ella. I do know a few people who go by El/Ella/Ellie as a nickname but their full name is not Ella.

Sarahphim · 16/01/2021 10:41

I liked Ella, but it was top 5 when my DD was born and we didn't want anything too popular. So we chose a similar/ longer name that was much less popular- never got higher than top 75 in the five years before she was born.

Then it turned out her best friend had the same name and there were two others in her year at secondary school. She now goes by the name Ella, but bizarrely we don't know anyone else with that name, despite it being so popular in the early 2000s.

So go with the name you like - you can never predict what will be popular in your school when they grow up.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 16/01/2021 06:23

Love Ella & Elle .

DramaAlpaca · 16/01/2021 05:49

Emilia is by far the nicest. It's pronounced slightly differently to Amelia and is nicer by far.

Ella is pretty, but honestly it's also quite a weak and insubstantial name in my opinion. Sorry. At least it's not as cutesy as Daisy.

bumblingalonghappily · 16/01/2021 05:44

Teacher here- I teach a LOT of Ellas. Not sure how many baby Ellas there are though.

It's not a name that stands out to me at first but when I think about it, it is pretty.
