Could you please rank these in order of preference. Don't mind knowing why as well :)

Alexander
Harry
Max
Jack
George
James

Matthew is falling off a cliff @Pudding01 if you look at the charts it's about to leave the top 100. You may know a few adults with this name but it's getting harder and harder to find babies with this name.

A great list you have @Pudding01

PopperUppleton · 13/01/2021 23:23

They're not rank Grin

That's my work team right there. Well, it would be if you'd included Elaine

Sojo88 · 13/01/2021 23:23

It's a good list of names.

Alexander - love this name, and love Alex for a boy or a girl

Harry
Max
Jack - these three are lovely

George - don't really like this name
James - wouldn't choose this one either

Ellmau · 13/01/2021 23:22
  1. Alexander
  2. Harry - prefer it as a nickname for Henry
  3. Max - prefer the full name to be Maximilian
  4. Jack
  5. George
  6. James
ParisJeTAime · 13/01/2021 23:22

Erin is too classy for Jack or Harry imo! Any of the others go really well I think.

I also like William and Thomas, which are similar.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/01/2021 23:20

@Pudding01 - Erin is very pretty. I'd count it as "fairly classic" as it's well known and often in the top 100 - the same as Max (so that would be my choice of your boys options to sound great with Erin).

Alexander
George
Harry
Jack
James
Max

DramaAlpaca · 13/01/2021 23:06

James - my favourite name, such a timeless classic
Harry - I like it, it's a happy sounding name to me
Alexander - I'm not mad on the full name, it's too long, but love Alex
Max - fine, nice and short
Jack - as above
George - it's a bit serious and stodgy for me, one of the few classics I don't like

SendHelp30 · 13/01/2021 23:05

Just read the full thread. I absolutely love the name Erin and stand by George being my favourite from your list followed by Jack.

I think they both sound lovely with Erin. Could you use one as a middle?
Jack Alexander?
George Alexander - abit too regal?

SendHelp30 · 13/01/2021 23:03

George
Jack
Max
Harry
Alexander
James

They’re all lovely names! What a nice list OP. Good luck

Pudding01 · 13/01/2021 23:02

Thanks 🙂

My DD is in the top 100 but way down. Her name is Erin & I love it's simplicity. It's not an "out there" name and is still widely recognised as (imo) an old school timeless classic. (and yes I do have Irish ties before that's brought up 😂)

I really struggle with boys names and I am aware that the names I like are more popular. I am trying to avoid names like Matthew, Oliver, Thomas etc which I also like, but know too many. But at the same time I'm not going to pick a name that's "out there" or doesn't fit because of a list on the Internet x

Oh, I forgot to add Edward in the "true classics", never out of the Top 100.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/01/2021 22:41

@Pudding01 - I don't find any of your choices boring but if you wondered, I count "true" classics as names that are always in the top 100 historically: Alexander, Charles, George, James, Thomas and William.

Fairly classic names to me are those that are very well known and that are often/currently in the top 100, like: Samuel, Michael, Henry, Matthew, David, Daniel, Jacob, Joseph, Frederick, Luke, etc.

Less common classics are imo traditional names not often used now or that have fallen out of favour: John, Hugh, Peter, Phillip, Robert, Christopher, Stephen, Richard, Nicholas, Mark etc

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 13/01/2021 22:27

Ha! I thought ‘rank’ in your title was an adjective rather than an imperative verb.

If you’re avoiding top 20 are you aware that George, Harry and Jack are all top 10? George is #2!

alltheadrenalin · 13/01/2021 22:11

Alexander - every Alex I've met has been lovely
James- timeless classic
George - it's nice to say 😆

Not to fussed about the last three
Harry
Max
Jack

cheeseisthebest · 13/01/2021 22:05

I think they are all really nice names.

Pudding01 · 13/01/2021 22:02

Thank you for the positivity so far, such a mixed bag! But definitely helps get a feel of responses to the names :) Even if I can have a top 3 out of it.

Just to those saying the names are boring - What would you class as non boring names? I like strong, classics that aren't in the top 20 if I can help it & not too "try hard".

Alexander
James
Jack
Max

Harry

PlantPotting · 13/01/2021 21:29

Lovely classic list

I like James the most

sorryforswearing · 13/01/2021 21:28

All just very ordinary and too popular. Nothing wrong with them. Just boring.

ParisJeTAime · 13/01/2021 21:27
  1. George
  2. James
  3. Alexander
  4. Max
  5. Harry
  6. Jack
PaigeMatthews · 13/01/2021 21:20

James
Alexander

Max
George
Harry
Jack

kittenpeak · 13/01/2021 21:17

Don’t worry too much about what others think. When people look at names they think about their own surname, How popular the name is in their area, what the middle name might be, names of any siblings etc.

inquietant · 13/01/2021 21:11

James
...
The rest

Chilldonaldchill · 13/01/2021 21:09

Alexander - my favourite. I love this. Alex, Xander or Ali are all good nn's.
Harry - I like this too.
Jack - I have met four Jacks in my life - I know it's super popular but it really isn't common where I am (n London). The ones I know are 19, 16, 15 and 15. I really like it.
Max - the ones I know are unpleasant but I like the name. I prefer it as a nn for Maxim.
James - is ok. I find it dull.
George - I'm not a fan
