Name for a boy in a similar vein

We're looking for a classic-ish name that is likely to work internationally.

We have Alexander, Anthony, Jasper, Philip.

What do you like and any good ideas for names in a similar vein?

What about Fraser?

yorkshireeveninglost · 14/01/2021 16:43

So bored of Alexander, it's so overused, has lost its shine.
Jasper is lovely and unusual but not too odd.
Anthony is great, as is Philip - both totally classical but really quite rare now.

Peter
Lucas

I love Jasper and Alexander, and I quite like Philip (but not Phil). I’m not keen on Anthony or its shortenings.

Other names that came to mind are Francis, James, Henry, Xavier, Joseph, Leo, Victor, Benjamin, Oliver.

McEwan · 14/01/2021 14:58

Thanks for suggestions

Why international?

We're a mixed nationality European family, and so we're looking for a name that is at least recognisable in a broadly European context without massive changes in spelling). Hence Alexander and Philip are broadly internationally understood, even if Philip would be Philippe in French.

Alexander lovely and so many options for diminutives - love Xander
Anthony - dated
Jasper - o think it's cute but it is a bit of a dog's name
Philip - soooo dated

Ithinkhedidit · 13/01/2021 18:49

I like Alexander. Jasper is ok. Not a fan of Anthony or Philip. Nicholas?

Ellmau · 13/01/2021 18:44

Alexander is a great name.

Jasper is too, BUT some countries will pronounce the J in ways you might not which may be an issue for you.

I love Jasper from your list. I also adore Rufus.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/01/2021 18:25

Of your shortlist I like Alexander best - lots of nn options and never goes out of fashion. 2nd choice would be Phillip - a bit out of fashion in the UK, but traditional and I love the nn Pip/Flip. Anthony and Jasper feel a touch too dated/old-fashioned for me personally.

I think Samuel, Adam, Lucas and Gabriel also work fairly well internationally, if you like any of those?

luckymagnoliatree · 13/01/2021 18:05

I love Jasper (slightly biased as our DS2 is called Jasper), also love Alexander. Not so keen on Phillip or Anthony personally.

How about Nathaniel (Nate for nn), Lucas, Silas, Wilfred?

Ooops I meant Rowan.

BigusBumus · 13/01/2021 17:15

I agree with @SmeleanorSmellstrop that the nn's for Philip and Anthony would put me off as would people saying An"th"ony as a th sound, like they do in Australia.

Love Jasper and Alexander. What about Hugo, Rowen or Miles?

bridgetreilly · 13/01/2021 17:01

Richard.

Your list is fine, though personally I don't love Anthony or Philip and I think Alexander is very popular, so I would pick Jasper.

I love Jasper and Alexander. Anthony and Philip seem dull and a bit dated in comparison - would you mind nicknanes Phil and Tony? Something to consider? I also wouldn't have thought Philip was very international is it? I am an expat and have never met a non-British Philip (not to say thetr aren't any of course, just that I'd never link 'Philip' and 'international'). How about Lucas or Oscar or John?

McEwan · 13/01/2021 15:50

Thanks for the ideas.

I just wanted to clarify that the four names (Anthony, Alexander, Jasper, Philip) is our short-list, but we want to make sure we're not missing anything. It's really hard to commit to a single name.
