Would you pronounce these the same?

Would you pronounce Lila and Lyla the same? Thinking of this name for our DD. I prefer spelling it with an I, he prefers Y and said he'd pronounce my spelling Leela. I don't want a name that'll constantly be mispronounced as I've had with my own name my whole life but I much prefer the I spelling. Any thoughts?

To my eye (and I do find these names confusing):

Lilah = Lil-a
Lyla and Lila = Lie-la
Leela = Lee-la
Layla = Lay-la

So Lilah doesn't help you, as it's a different name.

I naturally read Lido as lie-do too, though I'm aware that it's probably meant to be lee-do. Lilo (inflatable bed) is definitely lie-lo though!

HasaDigaEebowai · 11/01/2021 21:27

Lila I would pronounce as Lee la due to the Disney film Lilo and stitch (Lee lo)

Itsnotlikethiswithotherpeople · 11/01/2021 21:16

Sorry OP, agree with your husband too.

What about Lilah as others suggested?

notalwaysalondoner · 11/01/2021 21:12

Yes I would. I'd stick with Lilah or Lyla - Lila is too open to being pronounced 'Leela'

Royal Python has escaped! www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pets/4125261-Royal-Python-has-escaped

Cam2020 · 11/01/2021 18:27

I'd say them both as lie-la.

Lee-la, would be Leila to my mind.

How about Lilah? Does that make any difference?

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 11/01/2021 18:26

@BaronessBomburst 😂😂 you really really need to check out the "royal python has escaped" thread

EdgeOfACoin · 11/01/2021 18:24

I used to say "Lye-la". Then I heard some people say "Lee-la" and thought I must have got the name wrong.

Basically, I've heard it both ways but Lee-la seems to be more widespread.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 11/01/2021 18:06

Both the same lye-la. Like the start of lilo

Alwayswrongneverright · 11/01/2021 18:03

Lila I would say lie-la
But I worked with a lyla who pronounced it lay-la

DontFadeAway · 11/01/2021 17:50

I look after a Lila and she's pronounced Lie-la

Firebird83 · 11/01/2021 15:58

The same. I prefer the Lila spelling.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 11/01/2021 15:53

Both pronounced the same - rhymes with Isla.
... if you want Leela you’ll have to spell it as Leela.

AdelaideK · 11/01/2021 15:46

I'd pronounce them both the same. Lie-la.

AnnaSW1 · 11/01/2021 15:44

I have seen both spellings pronounced both ways!

Palavah · 11/01/2021 13:23

@CrochetOrBust

I’d pronounce them both as Lie-la unless told otherwise
Same
Soubriquet · 11/01/2021 13:16

Both the same

Leela is Lee-la to me

VenusClapTrap · 11/01/2021 13:14

This is one of those names that is spelt and pronounced in a multitude of different ways. I would avoid for that reason, personally.

BaronessBomburst · 11/01/2021 12:54

The only real issue on this thread is where on earth did @JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat get their username from? GrinShock

CaffiSaliMali · 11/01/2021 10:06

I think Lyla is the most obvious spelling for 'Lie-la'.

I would pronounce Lila as Lyla but I can see why people would pronounce it Leela too - like how Mila is pronounced Meela.

I know a Leila (leela) which is probably why I don't see Lila as Leela. Sometimes Leila is pronounced Layla.

Tbh I think all of those names have the capacity for mispronunciation so if it was me and I wanted Lie-la I would spell it Lyla.

SionnachRua · 11/01/2021 08:41

@SmeleanorSmellstrop

I also don't see how 'Lila' could be Lee-la though Confused
And yet you can see how Lisa is Leesa? Or Mila is Meela? It's not that much of a leap.
MercyBodle · 11/01/2021 04:28

Both pronounced the same - Lie-la.

Terracottasaur · 11/01/2021 03:39

I would pronounce them the same. My friend’s baby is Lila, pronounced Lie-la

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 11/01/2021 03:36

I also don't see how 'Lila' could be Lee-la though Confused

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 11/01/2021 03:35

Id say them exactly the same.

'Lyla' couldn't be pronounced as 'lee-la'.
