Would you use the name everyone hates?

So me and DH chose a name for our DD. It is English, classic, old, probably posh. I don't know anyone with the name and neither does my husband. We like the meaning, the sound of it and the diminutives. It goes well with the surname and our names. I don't want to say it but it is smth like Verity or Lavinia. Quite rare.
His family was very rough critisizing it, mine is being even worse. Anyone who we mention it to says how awful it is. Hmm I'm not getting it. There is no valid reason for such rude reaction apart from people not having heard of it much. I don't know what to do. We have already got used to it but are we ruining our baby's life? Have you been in a similar situation? I'm under the impression that you can meet a child with any name nowadays and our choice will hardly be a shock

We didn't tell anyone our DC's names before they were born, but when DC2 arrived, and we announced his name, a lot of people, including family gave us a 'wtf' face. I reallllllllly don't care. It's a great name. It suits him. It has a lovely meaning.

happylittlechick · 11/01/2021 06:15

If it's so unusual that even mentioning it on this post would be outing then I assume it's too weird to give to your kid.
But if you want a genuine opinion you need to say the name. It will give you an answer one way or another. Either 'you're family is crazy it's fine' or 'no they are right don't use it'

MrsMaryClausFace · 11/01/2021 06:15

Is it Dorkas?
Or something super posh like Araminta?

Lesson I learned 25 years ago - told Dh's family the first name I thought would be nice for unborn DH (Guy) I thought it was nice and classic. They immediately said - Guy the gorilla you can't do that. After that I did not tell them a single name we were thinking of until he was born. Because once DS was born it was just his name and no one could make fun of it.

Pretty sure OP unless you have chosen wild and loopy you will not have chosen a name which would out you,.

Unless a boy - and Endeavour in which case people will just get a list of links to Morse Grin

If you are too embarrassed to tell us the name anonymously, how will you cope when baby is born?

CodenameVillanelle · 11/01/2021 05:42

Post the name with an asterisk instead of one letter then it won't come up of Google's

calimommy · 11/01/2021 05:41

Aside from the fact we cannot comment on the name as you are being obscure about it, this is the exact reason my DH and I NEVER tell anyone the name before baby is born. Before a baby is born everyone thinks they have a duty to give their input into your choice. After baby is born people are much more inclined to keep their opinions to themselves. Now that you have told everyone the name you intend to use, you have to either stick with it and tell everyone to take a long walk off a short cliff, or change it. That's it.

And for what it's worth, I think your families sound atrocious. Absolutely pathetic to ridicule a name choice, especially if it is in fact a Real name with Real Spelling -yes I am one of those twats who hates made up names/spellings.

I have 3DC, expecting 4 in a few months, and each time my mother has done a "oh that's an interesting name...um where did you find that one?" And I can assure you each of my
Children have real/regular names.

garlictwist · 11/01/2021 05:14

Well it seems to be us all everyone ever wants on MN is a unique name no one else has. So if you pick one most people hate it's win win. Doesn't matter provided you like it.

Oreservoir · 11/01/2021 05:07

I loved the name Maud. Never met anyone else who liked it including dh so we didn’t use it.
I still love the name.

Woodlandbelle · 11/01/2021 04:52

Really would love to know the name or a hint.

But they do sound awful for being like this. Confused I don't under why people aren't just polite.

custardbear · 11/01/2021 04:49

Sorry posted too soon
My mum actively hated the name I gave my DD tried to get all my family to tell me so, and tried calling my DH to get him to change it - spent a lot of my pregnancy calling me with names she liked - it put a big rift in our relationship
Ignore them, I did snd my daughter lives her name (she's teen now£

custardbear · 11/01/2021 04:46

Ethel

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 11/01/2021 04:43

If everyone you have etold has had a really strong reaction and hated it, I'm going to say yes, ots probably awful. Hard to say when you are so determined not to say what it is though. Infact the thread is pointless really.

MercyBodle · 11/01/2021 04:31

What a rude family you have. Use the name. And don't in future share names with your family before the baby is born. I'm sorry this has happened to you.

PoppiesinOctober · 11/01/2021 02:58

What good is this thread if you won't say the name?

BackforGood · 11/01/2021 00:19

If you aren't open to people expressing their opinions on a name, then why on erth share it with people before the baby arrives ? Confused

Once the little one is an actual person, with that name, then people will be much less likely to share their opinions.

However, I do agree with this :
However, if everyone you tell universally hates it, I would wonder if there was any weight to their criticism? Is there a specific issue they have, would this be a burden or inconvenience to your child?

Generally, although you might get one or two 'blunter' people, you'll have that balanced out with people trying to not say anything, or trying to think or a slightly positive comment about a name. If everyone has really said how awful it is, then I'm inclined to go with the 'no smokl without fire' train of thought.

CeibaTree · 11/01/2021 00:18

Your thread is pointless if you won't share the name - maybe name change and start another thread if you don't want the name linked to your user name. Or do as a pp suggested and s p a c e it out.

Guineapigbridge · 11/01/2021 00:17

I named my kid the name that is both (a) rude in another language, (b) polarising.
I did it anyway. And it really suits her. It's her name, and its adorable.

(I did ask about my choice of name on here, this was 9 years ago. The response was don't do it. I asked MN to delete the thread as it was possible to google her name and I didn't want that for her in the future. They did).

AbbeyBelfast · 11/01/2021 00:10

Who posts asking advice on a name and refuses to mention the name?!

Bizarre people about these days like Hmm

partyatthepalace · 11/01/2021 00:01

Just name change and post it as a neutral what do you think of this name post - as part of a list if you want - so if your rellies spot it on a google it won’t matter

M0rT · 10/01/2021 23:55

Are your families reactions reverse snobbery?
As you said the name was quite posh. I'm wondering if the name itself is fine it's just their baggage around class maybe?
If that's the case then use the name you & your DH chose. If they keep pushing on it mock something about their names back until they stop.

NewYearNewLockdown · 10/01/2021 23:52

@BluebellsGreenbells
