Andie for a girl?

I like it, think it’s kind of effortlessly cool. DH thinks it’s a name used only for boys.

What do you think?

It made me think of Andie McDowell. I think it’s fine as a nickname for a girl but not as a full name - agree with pp Alexandra or Andrea.

itbemay1 · 11/01/2021 12:48

Love it

yankeedoodledandee · 11/01/2021 01:42

Andie Mcdowell is called Rosalie.

MissingLinker · 11/01/2021 01:29

DD is Andrea and quite often referred to as Andy so I'm possibly biased but I think it's a lovely name but, like PPs have said, put Andrea/Alexandra/Miranda (just thinking of --and names) on the Birth Certificate.

Marcipex · 11/01/2021 01:29

I love Andromeda.
Andrea is okay, my DGD pronounces it ‘Andraya’ which is a bit more glam.
Andrina?
Andante?
I would try to find a full name to abbreviate, to give her options later.
Melisande? There’s one in an Enid Blyton book.

YoniAndGuy · 11/01/2021 01:18

Ooh OP be brave and call her Andromeda 🥰

Changethetoner · 11/01/2021 00:17

I don't know the Goonies. I like Andie for a girl. pretty, like Angela.

Dee03 · 10/01/2021 23:54

I'm an Andi......officially Andrea but I've always been known as Andi and I like it....

BaronessBomburst · 10/01/2021 23:48

Andie is a girl's name.
Andy is a boy's name..
(And I love the fact that as soon as I type 'Andy' my phone suggests 'Tauer'..... Grin)

AliceMcK · 10/01/2021 23:43

I use to live with an Andy, short for Andrea but always called herself Andy. She was always bright and bubbly, the name suited her.

DueMay2021 · 10/01/2021 23:43

I think there's lots of beautiful girls names out there why use a boys name but it's personal preference

Edgeoftheledge · 10/01/2021 23:36

Like prefer Frankie

kittycat01 · 10/01/2021 23:35

Love it!

@2me2u2u2me

I love it, super cool name for a girl and also not popular. My son has an unusual name for a boy (usually a girls name) he likes it and only one in his school Smile
Jesse?
partyatthepalace · 10/01/2021 23:27

Well not as a full name

But as a nn for Andrea - or better as a nn for nicer names like Alexandra or Adrianna then all good.

ChrissyPlummer · 10/01/2021 22:56

I used to work with an Andrea who was only ever known as Andie. It suited her, but she did have the option at least.

I’d definitely give the full version though. Andie MacDowell’s name is actually Rosalie Anderson MacDowell. I’ve never seen ‘Pretty in Pink’ but I’d imagine the characters full name is Andrea, same as the Goonies I believe.

whereisthejoy · 10/01/2021 22:45

Love it!

BiscuitTea · 10/01/2021 22:18

I'm an Andi as a NN because my name is unpronounceable! I sometimes get surprised voices on the phone expecting me to be a boy but it's no big deal

RightOnTheEdge · 10/01/2021 22:14

Aanndyyy you Gooonie!! Is the first thing I thought of too! Grin
It not a bad thing though!

I like it.
I had a friend all through school called Andrea and we all called her Andy.

My dad calls me Andie, ....I’m female. I like it.

MercyBodle · 10/01/2021 22:09

I like it. It makes me think of Andie McDowell. I'd prefer it as a nickname, eg for Alexandra, but I like it as a full name too.

CrocodileFondue · 10/01/2021 22:07

There's an Andie in Dawson's Creek too, quite like it for a girl but I'd go with it as a nickname personally. Andrea is nice and due a comeback?

2me2u2u2me · 10/01/2021 22:05

What about Andie McDowell, gorgeous too!

Robbybobtail · 10/01/2021 22:02

I love it. And one of my fave characters EVER - Molly Ringwald as Andie in pretty in pink - so cool😎!

No one calls their boys Andy these days anyway so I don’t think it’ll be thought of as a boys name by her peers.
