Alexander and...

I’m sure this will have been done before (my searches are coming up with threads over a decade old though!) but what would you call a sibling for Alexander (Alex)?

If it is a girl, she will likely be called Annie in honour of a close relative, though I am still interested in alternatives/middle name possibilities.

Boys are proving more difficult! If we had the slightest bit of Scottish heritage I’d go for Ruairi, but we don’t so I think it’s out really and I just don’t love Rory in the same way somehow. I quite like Thomas, but there are so many around including a few of DH’s friends so I’m not sure he’d go for it. I also quite like Calum/Callum but I’m not 100% sure, and middle name could well be Alan and I don’t think that works!

All ideas welcome... Interested in sibling names of any Alexander’s you know too!

You could go with Ruairi, it's a gorgeous name and you do have an Irish connection.
People use names from all over the world, Alexander is Greek. I also think it's getting more well known now.

I like Thomas, Marcus and Matthew for boys names.
How about Joy as a middle name for Annie?

Lots of good ideas, thank you! DH’s name has been mentioned lots of times along with his brother and nephew’s, so we’re probably on the right lines.

I really like Liam, adding that to the list! William too though I can’t imagine us having a Will for some reason. Edward is another maybe on the traditional line.

I think Alex and Tom sounds lovely and I can imagine having a baby Tom, so I think that will stay in there. It is common here though, I work in a primary school and have known 7/8 in the last few years. I guess it’s popular for a reason though so maybe it doesn’t matter!

@amfairpuggled I did know about the Ruairidh spelling, though thought Ruairi is an acceptable alternative which would be slightly easier in England. Having read more about it it seems Ruairi is a more common Irish spelling... now pondering whether my Irish grandma is enough of a connection but I’m not sure it is really!!

I also quite like Andrew and like that it has the ‘An’ link, as we won’t be having any more babies after this one so won’t get to use Annie if it’s a boy, not sure about the nicknames though. Angus is also nice but I don’t know whether it would bring up the same ‘do you have Scottish heritage?’ as Ruairi/Ruairidh. Maybe I’m over thinking that!

@Backhometothenorth Annie Florence is beautiful! I had been wondering about Annie Rose as that would be a nod to another relative, but Rose is such a common middle name (don’t necessarily mind that for a middle name though) and it might be nice for her to have one name that is all her own.

Thank you all for distracting me from pregnancy insomnia too!

I don't think there are lots of Thomases now though? I think the height was 80s/90s? Double check cos goes very nicely with Alexander. I personally love Rory. Really don't like Callum. James nn Jamie would go very well.

I think the PP idea of Antonia nn Annie is great - Anna, Annabel, Annabeth, Annalisa nn Annie are all lovely too. I would personally give her a grown up name with nn Annie, so she doesn't feel hard done by next to Alexander.
