This is the latest name suggestion from my OH for our little boy due in May

What's your thoughts? I'm undecided

Awful.

Fine for a little boy. Not so good for a chubby, balding, 50-something man.

Remember you are naming an adult. That's what matters, not having friends say "Awww, that's so cute!!!"

DontFadeAway · 24/01/2021 08:50

I love it!

MissHoney85 · 24/01/2021 05:07

I have a Samson in the family who was named with the intention of calling him Sonny as a nickname. It never caught on and he's remained Samson, but could be an option? Also gives him the option of Sam if he chooses, so it's a name that can grow with him.

I also think that Sunni/Sunny used as an informal version of Sunil or Sundeep is instinctively understood in that context (and almost always spelled with a 'u' rather than an 'o') - i.e. Sunni as an abbreviation of Sunil; rather than Sonny, as a slightly condescending word for a young boy. Plus, his actual name is still Sunil or Sundeep for formal/official purposes and it's up to him to shorten it if/when he decides to do so.

Imagine an older man, being addressed as Sonny by younger people. Humiliating.

I agree with this (although others clearly don't - which is fine). To me, it's like calling a girl Missy - or even Lassie, for that matter! It's an affectionate term of endearment - only one step up from naming them Sweetheart, Darling or Lovely (in a traditional UK setting, that is - I can well imagine any of these being used naturally in an African setting).

RuthW · 22/01/2021 12:24

Awful for anyone over 5

BurtonHouse · 22/01/2021 12:13

Cute for a 2 year old, not so suitable for a 52 year old.
If you like Robin, what about Robert nn Robbie/Bobby.

funnyoldonion · 21/01/2021 20:49

Try hard

MaizeBlouse · 21/01/2021 20:33

I loved sonny but dp was less keen.

We also liked
Jesse
Ellis
Dexter
Cassius
Ralph
Frank

Babydust13 · 21/01/2021 20:30

@ParisJeTAime I really like Harrison but my OH doesn't

ParisJeTAime · 21/01/2021 20:10

I like it as a shortening for:

Jackson
Harrison
Grayson

How about:

Oscar
Hugo
Jasper
Leo

LynetteScavo · 21/01/2021 20:10

I love it.
As I'm having no more children I've decided it's the perfect name for my grandchild GrinWink

partyatthepalace · 21/01/2021 20:06

Fine as an nn but not as a full name - I know it’s popular at the moment but I think it’s weird. Agree Robin is better as a girls name - I like Robbie (Robert) though? Shame about Max. Reuben, Luke, Guy, Rory, Charlie, Billy, Frankie/Franklin.

Babydust13 · 21/01/2021 16:54

To be fair I'm still not sold but my OH just really likes it his other suggestion was Axel which I think is far worse

We're still thinking? Typically we had 4 girls names we loved 😂

PattyPan · 21/01/2021 14:29

I agree with pp who mentioned sonny Jim/policeman - it sounds like he’s being told off.

BigusBumus · 21/01/2021 14:26

Robin is a boys name. Robyn is the girls' variant.

I know 2 teenage Sonnys. Its ok, but there are sooooo much nicer names out there.

How about Tate, Asher or Rex?

mummax3 · 21/01/2021 14:19

I love it! So lovely xx
( We have a Rane (rain) love different names xx

musicalfrog · 21/01/2021 14:18

@EdgeOfACoin

It's very 1950s America.

I think it's a silly name on an adult.

Also, I think it's silly for anyone other than the child's parent to be addressing a boy as 'sonny'.

Ooh yes Sonny from Grease!

How about Manny?

Luckyelephant1 · 21/01/2021 14:13

Its nice enough. Very popular nickname (spelt as Sunny) for quite a few North Indian names eg Sundeep. Its nicer for a baby/child but I think adults can pull it off too, certainly more so than names like Archie!

ploopypleepy · 21/01/2021 12:39

The is is my favourite boys name. I picture a happy little surfer type child

Babydust13 · 21/01/2021 08:47

Thanks everyone still undecided but I'm grateful for all your opinions

Bearcub01 · 08/01/2021 12:40

I loved it and when we found out I was pregnant it was going to be Sonny! I soon got put off it because no one seemed to like it on here and had horrible opinions on it. I’ve now seen a few Sonny’s being born here recently so wouldn’t use it now anyway but if you like it, don’t let anyone put you off!

EssentialHummus · 08/01/2021 08:27

I think it depends on the surname. It can sound like an adjective.

FluffyEggsontoast · 08/01/2021 08:15

Love Stanley and Toby

How about Sidney or Otis?
