What do you all think of the name Samuel?

Ive never been keen on the name Samuel. Its a bit like Timothy, Benjamin or Christopher - to me it sounds a bit wet and not very manly in the long form, but the shortened names are absolutely fine.

Also I have a friend who has a Samuel and she pronounces it Sam-yull with a definite stop in the middle and 2 syllables. Makes me wince a bit.

Biased because I have a Samuel but I love it! At the minute he's Samuel or more often Sammy, but will more than likely become a Sam as he gets a bit older I should think
I have a Sam too, when he was younger, he was Scampi, Sam-a-lam-ding-dong....

Samuel Taylor Coleridge hated it and wrote about it quite damningly. Something to do with the uncertainty about pronouncing the middle syllable.

It's pretty inoffensive and mn seems to love it but I just find it really wet.

I find it very inoffensive but very dull. Sorry. I know an awful lot of Sam's between the ages of 12 and 22 - although mainly in church-going families. There weren't any at my children's primary and there are only one or two at their secondary so maybe my perceptions of popularity are skewed.

I love Sam, but for longer version prefer Samson.

Beautiful name. DC1 was almost Samuel. DC3 if it happens and if a boy will be Samuel.

I'm definitely in the minority, but I really, really don't like the name Samuel.
Me too! In any form. It's actually one that I dislike intensely. No idea why.

I knew a real dick that was named Samuel so it's kinds but me off the name! BUT I recently met a really really lovely Samuel, who went by Sam! Overall, good, solid, friendly name!

I really like Samuel and it was on our list when I was pregnant with DC1, but I knew it would inevitably be shortened to Sam which I don’t dislike but I much prefer the full name Samuel. Still think it’s a great name though.

Mine's grown up and I still love it. And he's still known by the full version in the family but Sam everywhere else.
