Vinnie for a girl

So me and my partner both absolutely love the name Vinnie. Originally we were both dead cert if we was having a boy we would call them vincent. But when we found out we were having a girl we settled on the name emma but neither of us was really that in love with it. A month or so ago my other half turned round and said what about Vinnie for a girl. We both agreed we liked it so much more than Emma but I can't decide whether to just go for it and call her Vinnie or whether to give her a more 'formal' name on her birth cert.
I've been trawling the net, neither of us like lavinia, lavina, lovina, alvina, elvina, davina. I quite like vivenne but he doesn't.

Any other suggestions and thoughts on Vinnie in its own right welcome 😊

@CodenameVillanelle

Winnie nickname Vinnie? Are you serious?

My daughter has a day to day name and a BC name and I am glad she does as her day to day name isn’t everyone’s cup of tea (Effie) and she has her BC name to fall back on if she doesn’t like it when she grows up, plus I feel it looks more formal for things like job interviews.
I think Vinnie is a very strong name and although you clearly love I do agree it’s a good idea to give her a BC name so she has options.

@Bettieboogie I don't think people would assume boy from Vinni! How cute that it comes from elf or magical friend!!!!! Perfect with Faye! X

user686833 · 07/01/2021 11:58

I would either go for Vinni, as that looks more feminine, and is actually the version that means elf or magical friend, so goes better with Faye.

Or I would to with Vivienne, I have known a couple of very cool families with a Vivienne nickname Vivi over the last 10 years, but Vinnie would work too.

Don't go with Emma. You don't love it and it's dull.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 07/01/2021 11:50

Vinnie as a given name is too harsh and masculine sounding to me (It reminds me of stereotypical Italian American mobsters!). Another name on the BC would give her more options if she dislikes Vinnie when older. Any other feminine name with a strong "V" sound would work imo, like pp suggestions of - Vincenza, Vincentia, Vivien, Virginia, Valentina, Veronica, Vanessa, Evelina or Genevieve could all work for "Vinnie".

Luckyelephant1 · 07/01/2021 11:48

I quite like Vinnie, it's not something I'd have ever thought of but it sounds quite cool. Winnie just reminds me of Winnie the Pooh lol.

I think it could just about pass for a full name, or it could be a nickname for any V name really as its quite a rare letter to start a name with.

Veena is nice, quite a common Indian name
Vanessa
Viola
Violet
Vivienne is lovely although I can see that's already been vetoed
Vienna

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/01/2021 11:34

If you think she could carry it off (and Rising Damp was a very long time ago, now), how about full name Vienna?! Personally, I think that's on the funky side of the 'normal' line rather than the wacky side!

Veena is a common Asian name, although you might get some bullies changing it to Wiener, which, ironically, they probably wouldn't with Vienna (even though it literally means 'from Vienna')!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/01/2021 11:30

I agree with you about asking strangers, though, OP. Friends and family won't want to rock the boat, so they'll just say what you want to hear. Loyal of them, but not representative of how well your child's name will be received in the real world. It shouldn't matter, but most people wouldn't want others laughing at them behind their back because their parents gave them what could be perceived as an unfortunate name (not necessarily saying that's the case for Vinnie).

Vinlandia?! Or Yvonne, known as Vonnie?

shittestxmasever · 07/01/2021 11:28

I have a female family member named Vina and it's always been pronounced vee-na never vy-na. You could spell it Vena maybe?
Love it

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/01/2021 11:24

Vinnie makes me think of a Mafioso - sorry, but it does.

However, if you already have a Winnie in the family, hence you're avoiding it, isn't Vinnie too close anyway? In some accents, 'V' and 'W' frequently get linguistically confused so they sound the same; but even if that's not the case for anybody in your family, they do sound deliberately matchy.

Lesserspottedmama · 07/01/2021 11:16

Vinnie, I like it a lot! I’d definitely put something else on the birth cert though; I like the suggestions of Vivienne/Vivian, Genevieve, Vina etc. Violet? Sylvie? Avis?
Emma is nice but so overused. A friend of mine had an Emma and she did tell me once that she often wonders if they should’ve gone for something else but it was all they could agree on. I have 4 DC and DH and I both agree the more unusual names are ones that have most stood the test of time with us and we still love them so much. The ‘safer’ names I still love because they belong to my DC but they don’t light me up in the same way.

@FamilyOfAliens
I completely agree with your point about asking strangers but I kind of wanted to know how I would feel after negative responses to the name as well as good. Best to see how I feel now as opposed to after I've given her the name. I still love it even after the negatives 😊

Great! I would never ask random strangers on here what they think about name choices anyway - the range of opinions is too broad to help make a decision and you could end up being swayed by people whose opinion you’d never ask in a million years if you met them irl.

Fine if you’re asking whether to paint your bathroom grey. A bit more important when giving a child a name they have to live with for the rest of their life!

HelebethH · 07/01/2021 10:42

I used to work with a girl called Vina pronounced Veena. Her family nickname was Vinnie

Paperyfish · 07/01/2021 10:42

Vincenza- I think that’s a name ( sorry home schooling and not read through in detail)

Vinnie always makes me think of vindictive!
I did read a (Judy Blume?) book once where a girl was named after her uncle Vinnie, they called her Vincenza (which pronounced vin-chen-za as it’s Italian) but nicknamed her Vicky to make it more feminine anyway.

Bettieboogie · 07/01/2021 10:37

@Libertybells1
We are in england. So the pronunciation will be hard work. My youngest brother is called Eoghan and people struggled alot even with that name and it's not even that unheard of.
I adore alot of irish names but dont want to inflict a lifetime of bad pronunciation and misspelling on them 🙈

There is an actress called Vinny Dhillon.

Bettieboogie · 07/01/2021 10:35

@WiseOwlRelaxing
Also seriously thinking about Veronica but it is also my Nanas name.
My aunty named my cousin after my dad and he used to get so confused my dad had the same name as him when he was little and got stuck with being called little guy rather than just guy. He's still little guy to the family even now hes in his 20's.

She won't thank you for it.

Bettieboogie · 07/01/2021 10:32

@WiseOwlRelaxing Winnie can't be used. It's already been used by a close family member. But an equally beautiful name 😊

Libertybells1 · 07/01/2021 10:30

I know you said you're avoiding Irish names but I have a friend nicknamed Vinnie and her name is Béibhinn (pronounced like Bayveen, although you can also pronounce it Bayvin, or Bevvin if you remove the first 'i' and the fada over the 'e'). Really suits her but not ideal if you're in the UK I suppose, as people will mangle the pronunciation.

GAW19 · 07/01/2021 10:26

Vinnie is beautiful op!
I love typical 'male' names for girls, think it can work really well

WiseOwlRelaxing · 07/01/2021 10:25

Love the suggestion of Winnie!

Would your partner accept Winnie!?

She sounds a bit bossy about this.
