Vinnie for a girl

So me and my partner both absolutely love the name Vinnie. Originally we were both dead cert if we was having a boy we would call them vincent. But when we found out we were having a girl we settled on the name emma but neither of us was really that in love with it. A month or so ago my other half turned round and said what about Vinnie for a girl. We both agreed we liked it so much more than Emma but I can't decide whether to just go for it and call her Vinnie or whether to give her a more 'formal' name on her birth cert.
I've been trawling the net, neither of us like lavinia, lavina, lovina, alvina, elvina, davina. I quite like vivenne but he doesn't.

Any other suggestions and thoughts on Vinnie in its own right welcome 😊

I think Vinnie on its own is very limiting for either boy or girl.
I think cutsey nicknames are great as small children but as an adult it's important to have a more formal name to fall back on, on the birth certificate.
I know in the UK nicknames are very popular and common so maybe I just don't get the culture though!

I would use Lavinia and nickname Vinnie 😊.

Sylvine is a pretty French name meaning forest. Vivienne is lovely. Genevieve feels a bit too different to Vinnie and not a natural nickname although it is lovely. If she craves a classically feminine name, she would have one. If not, she could stick with Vinnie, which she may love anyway.

Belinda554 · 08/01/2021 20:47

Nothing wrong with it as a nick name, but give her a female name.

My parents did similar and I changed to my longer name when I was a bit older. Choice is good.

pinfloy · 08/01/2021 20:46

I would have thought that if Winnie was out because it's already used by family, then Vinnie is too close to that anyway. Especially if the only name and not just a nickname

Crazzzycat · 08/01/2021 20:45

I have a friend called Vinita, nickname Vinnie.

1940s · 08/01/2021 20:41

I knew a wonderful Verinia once, I've never met another

fairydustandpixies · 08/01/2021 20:40

NO!!

madcow88 · 08/01/2021 20:39

Noooo

Starlightstarbright1 · 08/01/2021 20:38

Vinnie i would assume was a boy.. Emma isn't the right name for you. Look for another

TildaTurnip · 08/01/2021 20:34

Bertie, Vinnie...

NEVER see anyone say, ‘I’ve always loved girl names for boys’.

Vinnie, no matter how much anyone says is an old English girl name, is a masculine name and a fairly harsh masculine name at that. I honestly would change my name and question if my parents had wanted a boy if I had been called that.

Calling her Vinnie is bad enough but giving that as her only choice for a name is mean.

Genevieve nn Vinnie would work well, it would give your daughter choices when she's older. It's good to have choices.

combatbarbie · 08/01/2021 20:16

I know a female Vinnie in her 40s, I like it!

Honeydukesmum · 08/01/2021 20:14

So if you like Vinnie go for it xx

Honeydukesmum · 08/01/2021 20:13

We have a Bertie .. we named bump and decided early on loved it for boy or girl.

Got convinced right near the end to give her a ‘girl’ name on birth certificate so she is Beatrix known as Bertie.

Still wish we had stick with Bertie as no one calls her Beatrix and she adamantly tells everyone she is Bertie 🥰

partyatthepalace · 08/01/2021 17:08

I think Vinnie is lovely!

But I have to say I would give her a full name on the birth cert - Vivienne has a real energy (makes me think of vivacious and vivid), but you could use Vincenza (there's a Catholic name for you) or Veronica or any V name you like TBH. Gwendoline or Winnifred would also work I think.

I think the problem with Vinnie as a full name especially for a girl, she might grow up to want to be able to use a recognisably female name or a more formal name, so it would be for her to be able to choose when she's a grown up.

I would in a pretty informal industry, but it's very client based, and there are times it's useful to use my full name with more formal people.

I've never heard of Vinnie as an old English girl's name and slightly doubt it (they write a load of rubbish on baby name sites).

Or there is Oona as well as Orla...

Rubybluesy · 08/01/2021 00:57

Awful name and it's for a male! Vinnie Jones??

partyatthepalace · 08/01/2021 00:49

Love Vinnie as a nn but agree she needs a proper name.

Really like Vivienne - I think it’s v energetic. Genevieve also a good idea above. I like Virginia also (but if you are worried about Orla/Oral I am guessing you won’t!)

imalmosthere · 07/01/2021 19:01

I'm sorry no - it's awful as a name on it's own for a girl. A nickname absolutely, Genevieve is lovely!

Firebird83 · 07/01/2021 18:37

I would definitely put something else on the birth certificate. Vinnie is quite a popular boys name at the moment and I don’t think a girl would appreciate having that as her only option.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 07/01/2021 17:01

Nope! Vinnie Jones?!

BiBabbles · 07/01/2021 15:48

I could see it as nicknames for things like Vincia, Vinia, Vina - though only if you don't want to use Vincent in the future.

BalloonSlayer · 07/01/2021 15:36

How about Venetia, nickname Vinnie?

Baileysoncereal · 07/01/2021 15:30

I think all the below could have Vinnie as a NN?

Alvena
Davina
Lavinia
Vivian
Vincentia
Vinette

Blackberrybunnet · 07/01/2021 15:27

Oh, I LOVE Genevieve! Would never have thought of Vinnie as a nn for that, but it works really well.

user686833 · 07/01/2021 15:20

Also have a daughter with a long foreign birth certificate name that is never used. We announced as full name (nickname in brackets) and no one has called her the full name. We only ever come across the full name at medical appointments. They asked how it's pronounced and we say 'we call her nickname'. School have her nickname down for everything. I've no regrets, I like she has the less cutesy full name for adult work email address etc or if she fancies a different nickname later.
