Which one do you like best? I really like Elodie but will it be a bit too cutesy little girl name for when she's older?

Elodie
Emilia
Mari (Welsh name pn Marry)
Betsi (Welsh name pn Betsy)
@CaffiSaliMali that's so funny you mention that thread as I think that was also mine. I don't do too well on here with Welsh names always get told to spell them the English way 🙈🙈🙈 Maybe I should stop asking!
I love how you were so clear in your OP and people still said it...

CaffiSaliMali · 07/01/2021 14:22

@lucieloos in which case, you have great taste Grin

Tomos is high up on my list, Harri would be too but there is already a baby Harry and a baby Henry amongst my friend's kids so it's probably best avoided. I love Rhodri but all DH's family are English as are half of mine and the Rh wouldn't sound right.

Kokeshi123 · 07/01/2021 14:13

Mari is beautiful.

Oh I love Mari, go for that. I had the most wonderful great great Aunty Mari on Nain's side, and another on my Taid's side. Mari is high up on my list (half Welsh/half English, born and raised in England). The other names on my list are Alys, Eira and Tesni.

Welsh names are beautiful and I love mine.

Betsi is nice too and Nansi, Lwsi and Elsi are also nice cymrified names.

Elodie and Emilia are nice but feel very trendy. Mari is a classic.

Agree with others that there is a perception of Welsh names as being 'youneeq' due to cultural ignorance. A few years ago someone had a thread 'Harri, Tomos or Rhodri' and got a barrage of 'please spell them correctly' comments.

DacwMamYnDwad · 07/01/2021 09:34

@FixTheBone, it's not a 'clever modern spelling', it's the Welsh spelling.

I agree with ArosAdraDrosDolig about Cultural ignorance and snobbery.

Alys and Alis have been used as welsh spellings of Alice for a long time. The spelling Alis was more common in the past, and was the original old french spelling.

Why does the OP need to use the English version when she is Welsh and wants to give her baby a Welsh name?

Mally2020 · 07/01/2021 01:36

Mari is my fave by far
then emilia
then betsi
then elodie
but your list isn't a bad one compared to alot we hear of on hear, if you named your child any of the 4 I would think oo unique

Wheresmykimchi · 07/01/2021 01:19

@RainingBatsAndFrogs

Elodie Betsy (unless in Wales or Welsh )
OP has made it clear the name is in Welsh
stoneysongs · 07/01/2021 01:02

@ArosAdraDrosDolig

I think by ‘clever modern spellings’, Fuxthebone means to say the Welsh spelling. I’ve heard Alys dismissed as ‘yooneek’ on mn before now. Cultural ignorance and snobbery.
I did wonder. Incredible ignorance if so.
frenchfancy81 · 07/01/2021 01:00

Please use Betsy not Betsi if you go for that name.

RiverSkater · 07/01/2021 00:55

But they are all lovely!

RiverSkater · 07/01/2021 00:54

Elodie is beautiful, like a song

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 07/01/2021 00:45

Fixthebone, that should say 😂

stoneysongs · 06/01/2021 22:14

@FixTheBone

Personally none of them.

I'd discount names immediately based on there being any doubt about the pronunciation, or any that have 'clever' modern spellings of traditional names.

What clever modern spellings?
missmouse101 · 06/01/2021 22:14

Elodie is awful (L.O.D), Emilia has such an ugly sound (eh MEALY uh. ) Betsi is nice, Mari is a bit dull.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 06/01/2021 22:09

Elodie
Betsy (unless in Wales or Welsh )

Emelene · 06/01/2021 22:02

Elodie is my favourite on that list!

twinketwinkle · 06/01/2021 21:59

Love Mari

SuitedandBooted · 06/01/2021 19:40

Mari.
Although I may be biased as I only considered Welsh name for my children. I don't think it's missing something either. Also to me, Meredith is an older bloke's name.

As an interesting mix of "ri" and "E", how about Eleri?

Firebird83 · 06/01/2021 17:50

Mari, definitely. Elodie and Emilia are overused.

Wheresmykimchi · 06/01/2021 16:24

Not an Elodie fan but then I don't like El names

Emilia.

pinacollama · 06/01/2021 16:14

I think Elodie is beautiful. I love Emilia too.

lucieloos · 06/01/2021 15:56

Thanks @SmeleanorSmellstrop Mari doesn't seem like there's something missing if you're Welsh though but I get that it might seem strange to some.

Elodie isn't actually all that popular. It's not in the top 100.
