Which one do you like best? I really like Elodie but will it be a bit too cutesy little girl name for when she's older?

Elodie
Emilia
Mari (Welsh name pn Marry)
Betsi (Welsh name pn Betsy)

@coronafiona

Mary and Betsy are spelled with y
Did you read the thread? Or even the OP? That aside , who are you to tell anyone how they spell their chosen name Confused
FreezerBird · 11/01/2021 12:50

Betsi is my favourite of those, but I'd go for Betsan as a full name to avoid the cutesiness concerns.

SeaWitchly · 11/01/2021 12:41

Emilia 😊

DacwMamYnDwad · 11/01/2021 12:40

OK. Thanks whatausername.

I was told it was Mah-ry, and that Mhairi was Vah-ry. Another example, I suppose, of a name being anglicised. It happens with welsh names, and they don't sound anywhere near as nice.

Mairi and Mari both sound like Marry.

whatausername · 11/01/2021 00:01

If Mari is pronounded marry then it is definitely the same as Mairi. I grew up with Mairis.

DacwMamYnDwad · 09/01/2021 20:06

@whatausername, Mari is pronounced Marry, and Mairi is pronounced Mahry, so not quite the same.

OublietteBravo · 09/01/2021 12:11

Mari is my favourite. It’ll be fine - even in England. My DD’s best friend is called Mari - we’re nowhere near Wales and everyone manages to pronounce it correctly.

whatausername · 09/01/2021 12:04

Mari is my favourite. Pretty and traditional, not overly twee. She'll do just fine across the UK with that (apart from England) as in Scotland there's Mairi (same pronunciation afaik). In N.Ireland there's probably something similar too!

bananamonkey · 08/01/2021 19:26

I like them all but I’m biased because I have an Emilia Betsy and also had Elodie on my list. I like Mari too but think I’d choose Betsi, Welsh names are so pretty.

coronafiona · 08/01/2021 19:08

Ah- sorry! Thanks

Hooplawho · 08/01/2021 14:17

I like Betsi best - lovely name

CatandBaby · 08/01/2021 14:16

Love Mari (also Mairi; weirdly not Marie though).

Elodie sounds more pretentious than cutesy to me.

Betsi dies sound quite cutesy to my (English) ears.

Emilia is very "of its time" - I prefer Emma.

Enidblyton1 · 08/01/2021 14:11

Love them all. If you like Elodie best then definitely go for that. It is fine for adults! I met a few French Elodies in the 90s on French exchanges and they would all be in their 40s now. Would never occur to me that it’s too cutesy for adults. Maybe you think that because it hasn’t been a popular name in the U.K. for very long, so the majority of Elodies here will be under 10. One day they’ll be older!

Macblondie · 08/01/2021 14:08

I think Elodie and Emilia are my favourite from your list. Lovely names.

DueMay2021 · 08/01/2021 14:05

Emilia is my fav but I'm bias it's my nieces name

CaffiSaliMali · 08/01/2021 14:02

Again, Mari and Betsi are correct in Welsh.

Lots of Welsh names have equivalents in English and other languages:

Mari, Mair and Meira - Mary
Lowri - Laura
Mali - Molly
Catrin - Katharine
Sian - Jane
Siôr - George
Ifan, Ioan, Ianto, Ieuan and Siôn - John
Tomos - Thomas
Alys - Alice
Osian - Oisín
Nia - Niamh
Harri - Harry
Marc - Mark
Steffan - Stephen
Dafydd - David

They are all correct in Welsh.

DacwMamYnDwad · 08/01/2021 13:31

Elodie doesn't work, for the same reason.

Eldeg is a bit similar to Elodie.

@coronafiona, yes Mary and Betsy are spelt with a y but Mari and Betsi are spelt with an i. Both Mari and Betsi are established names, not misspelt and mispronounced English names.

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 08/01/2021 13:25

Bloody anglocentric ignorance.

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 08/01/2021 13:24

Ffs coronafiona, in English they are! The OP has made it very clear that she is Welsh. This is really getting on my nerves now.

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 08/01/2021 13:23

The emphasis in Welsh is usually on the penultimate syllable where there are more than two syllables in the word, so Elowen does work in Welsh in terms of pronunciation. I’m in Wales and would use it.

coronafiona · 08/01/2021 13:20

Mary and Betsy are spelled with y

Poppyolive90 · 08/01/2021 13:13

Elodie gets my vote

ILoveShula · 08/01/2021 13:11

Elowen is said as L Owen, not L O N.
Elwen might be a compromise.

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 08/01/2021 12:59

Elowen is lovely, one of my favourite names but it is Cornish rather than Welsh.

partyatthepalace · 08/01/2021 01:15

I like Elodie, though I think it sounds better in French. It’s not as cutesy as Betsi

Love Emilia, and think that is a more popular spelling than Amelia these days.

I like Betsi, but would give her Elizabeth (or something) as a full name as it is cutey

Don’t like Mari

What about Elowen?
