What do you think of Mary? I love this name but i often see it described negatively. To me, Mary is in the same sort of category as Eliza, Nell, Edith - old but strong baby girl names. Do you like it? I really like Mary for a little girl but don't want to saddle her with a name that everyone will hate.

OF the moment

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/05/2022 23:39

Yes. Feels off the moment but not overused.

breadedchicken · 08/05/2022 09:56

My mum (75) has a really wide circle of friends and has 14 different Mary's in her phone all similar in age to her. I think it's so old fashioned and frumpy and religious sounding.

UsernameIsHarderThanBabyName · 08/05/2022 07:14

I love it

RuthW · 08/05/2022 00:16

I like it.

tootouchy · 07/05/2022 23:53

Beautiful. Ready for a comeback. I know a baby Mary and a teen Mary. So pretty IMO.

I really like it. A friend of my mum has a Mary we've known since a baby. She's 21 now and as a pp said, it has suited her from being a baby until now.

My mum's friend has a Mary 😂

Sorry it means vulva round here too 😂

Feckingfeck · 07/05/2022 23:46

Hairy Mary 😱

SpaceJamtart · 07/05/2022 23:46

Its fine, I would assume family was probably very religious.
Its not off putting but is boring, I wouldnt want to be called Mary.
Theres something a bit twee about it but it has been popular forever so lots of people must have liked it

ElvenMoonwings · 07/05/2022 22:38

Does anyone who likes it ever notice just how much it's been used, and how it still has that "Miss Anyone Everyone image" ...

Each to their own.

MONSTERSALAD · 04/01/2022 16:11

It's an excellent name. Understated and old fashioned and not overused. Has an equivalent in lots of different languages and cultures. Simple. Easy to spell. Everyone knows how to pronounce it.

flowerbubbles · 04/01/2022 14:41

I think it's a bit boring tbh

KimDeals · 04/01/2022 14:29

Don’t mess with Mary! It’s such a standalone, “no fuss needed to cute me up, I can stand on my own two feet” kind of name. I absolutely adore it.

I have a Mary. I tell her, you have a very unique name - everybody knows it but very few people know a young Mary.

We have never met another Mary-child yet.

Can’t count the amount of times it has caused people to stop in their tracks and say “that’s my mums name…” or something to that effect … it just has its own unique charm and the way it is received is so so lovely.

Was gobsmacked when a Mary turned up on Love Island last year!

HerculesMulligan · 04/01/2022 14:24

Zombie thread - but I have a 2yo Mary and no regrets - everyone can spell it and knows how to pronounce it, but it's not common and has about a million brilliant namesakes (Wollstonecraft was first in my mind but Shelley, Anning, Seacole, Beard, Poppins, Berry etc etc etc).

SmellyNelliey · 04/01/2022 14:20

My little girl is called Mary she's 5 year old.

PlainJane1000 · 04/01/2022 14:17

@Evanna13

I would assume a child called Mary is named after an older relative or maybe for religious reasons.
This is how I feel about Mary too. I know there are a lot of 'religious' names but to me, the religious association with Mary is very strong.
DontTellThemYourNamePike · 04/01/2022 10:41

Well seeing as the baby is a year old now….

Ha! I didn't notice thisGrinGrin

ISmellBurnings · 04/01/2022 10:18

I just wouldn't use it

Well seeing as the baby is a year old now….

TheYearOfSmallThings · 04/01/2022 10:06

I love it but it falls in the same category as Jane and Anne - people like a fancier name these days. It will definitely come back around, but the little Marys I know now are Ukrainian, Australian and Swedish. I don't meet little English Marys among the Esthers and Irises and Florences and Pearls in the playground.

emmathedilemma · 04/01/2022 10:04

Love it!

CrackerGal · 04/01/2022 09:58

@NearlyAHoarder

Older Marys could have been named after Queen Mary as well. (My Grandmother Molly) was one of those. Born in Scotland roughly 1909
I love the name Molly & Nell too.
CrackerGal · 04/01/2022 09:57

@NearlyAHoarder

Travellers have good taste in names.

Although I've heard some non-classic names called out so have the impression their 'rules' aren't stuck to as rigidly as they were 20 years ago.

Yes it might depend where you are though, where I am in Ireland its still all traditional names with the traveller families that I know anyway. Kids are named for people usually. Lots of boy Miley's too. Yes it's nice to see these names haven't died out & are still used a lot!
Letitsnoooow · 04/01/2022 09:56

I don’t like it at all.

NearlyAHoarder · 04/01/2022 09:49
