Elsa

I've loved the name Elsa for a a very long time. It ticks a lot of boxes for me: familiar without being overly popular, and no issues with spelling and pronunciation. But then Frozen was released.

So is the Frozen reference still too overwhelming seven years later? I don't have small children so I'm a bit out of the loop as to whether Frozen is a bit passé now.

Would using Elisabeth with Elsa as a diminutive work - giving options to revert to one of the many non-Frozen nicknames or the full name if she grows up not to love ice queens? (I'm not usually a fan of working backwards to make a nickname work but I like both Elsa and Elisabeth)

Definitely too much of a frozen connection for me
But nn is a good idea

Or something similar like Elza, or ilsa?

HedgieHog · 05/01/2021 23:34

My first though was Elsa frost banterqueen
Look her up online/ tik tok
Don’t do it!!! 😂

Bluesername · 05/01/2021 23:31

Elsa is a lovely name. I only know of one young Elsa so I'd say for for it.

Teakind · 05/01/2021 23:10

It’s a beautiful name but my first thought was ‘do you want to build a snowman?’

Nonamesavail · 05/01/2021 20:44

Frozen 2 only just came out.

We Have an elsa at school and yes she gets lots of do you wanna build a snowman.

ZebraKid71 · 05/01/2021 20:42

I know one born a year before the films.. at first her parent's hated it but now frozen is so popular that I think it has put a lot of people off using it so there aren't many around.

The connection isn't going anywhere but its not a bad association and a lovely name.

I like the idea of using it as a nickname for Elisabeth.

OloBo · 05/01/2021 19:08

I knew if one born not long before the first movie and felt terrible for the parents at the t ins. I don’t think it’s a no no, as it’s already a name. You/she just might have to put up with a few comments.

binnhill · 05/01/2021 15:22

My dog was called Elsa but had the name since 2001 ,. No problem first years ,but later on when Frozen came out everyone thought I'd named her after the character of the film🤭

MichelleofzeResistance · 05/01/2021 15:14

Its a lovely name and there's plenty of children called Wendy, Peter, Alice, Robin, Charlie, Arthur etc etc who have done just fine. This is the issue with having the good names; there are other people who have them and stories with characters named as them.

Having grown up with a really weird name that no one had but me, it would actually have been nice to have had a book hero or two to share a name with. Parents tend to like uniqueness more than children do.

And yes, she's going to get the occasional twit singing Let It Go at her and asking her to build snowmen - there are many, many worse things!

Soubriquet · 05/01/2021 15:04

I like Elsa but I couldn’t deal with all the let it go comments

What about Ilsa?

Sounds like Elsa but just different enough that people might not think

CatMumOnPurrlough · 05/01/2021 15:00

Don't forget there's a character in American Horror Story: Freak Show called Elsa Mars!

daisypond · 03/01/2021 21:24

Elsa is fine. It’s a nice name, and has been well established for many years. It’s not a “Disney Princess” type of name.

TicTacTwo · 03/01/2021 21:05

Elsa and Frozen is like Aurora and Sleeping Beauty and that came out in the 1950s.

Frozen is not a bad association unless her sister is Anna

Essexgirlupnorth · 03/01/2021 20:40

I'm Ailsa and apart for people being able to spell the Elsa version now which is an improvement of the many misspellings I have had over the year and my daughter loving the fact I had the same name not noticed much difference.
Not met that many Ailsa/Elsa's in real life so don't think it is getting massively popular but yes people will probably associate it with frozen now but maybe not so much in 10 years time.

Lemonpiano · 03/01/2021 20:39

It might be ok, but I only opened this thread to find out if you were deliberately considering a Disney themed name, so maybe not.

Imissmoominmama · 03/01/2021 20:34

Me too @GarlicSoup!

HibernatingTill2030 · 03/01/2021 20:30

I love it, don't know if I would use it though.
Elizabeth nn Elsa is a good idea. She can chop and change her name as much as she wants, so many nn's for Elizabeth!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/01/2021 20:27

It's a great name and Frozen isn't a bad association, is it

GarlicSoup · 03/01/2021 19:57

I’m going to show my age, but my first thought was ‘Elsa the Lion cub’ 🦁

MondeoFan · 03/01/2021 19:47

How about Elspeth?

Mumtoalittlegirl · 03/01/2021 19:47

How about Elsie? Or Isla?

Joeylucy · 03/01/2021 19:46

I know someone who called their daughter Elsa at the height of frozen mainly because they liked the names Isla and Elsie so it’s a combination of these but I don’t think she gets frozen mentioned to her Smile

sararh · 03/01/2021 19:45

It’s kind of like saying, ‘If I call my daughter Mulan or Ariel will people make the connection with the Disney Princess?’ And the answer is yes.

partyatthepalace · 03/01/2021 19:43

FroZen is still v big

But Elisabeth nn Elsa is a great way to give her options

joystir59 · 03/01/2021 19:36

I prefer Ailsa.
