Charlie, too “cutesy” for a man??

I like this name but wondering what it’d be like on a man? DH prefers Alex, I’m not sure that suits a baby/toddler as much!

Thanks @VanillaAndOrange I feel the same, I’d normally opt for full name on BC but Charles has a totally different feel to the name which I dont like,

ShirleyPhallus · 04/01/2021 13:26

All the grown up Charlies I know are rather attractive, in a rugby-boy-from-Clapham-turned-financier type way. Ditto Jack and Max.

Fine name imo

SleepingStandingUp · 04/01/2021 13:24

Charlie Hunman seems to cope. He can always go to Charles or Lee as a nn

bridgetreilly · 04/01/2021 13:22

Namechange fail?

Whatthedoodle · 04/01/2021 09:18

DP has an uncle Charlie. It doesn’t seem cutesy on him at all, he’s a lovely man though. I really really like the name.

CaffiSaliMali · 04/01/2021 08:21

I know several Charlie's in their 20 and 30s, it doesn't feel cutesy on them at all. They're all Charles officially though. Some have work emails of Charles.Surname@... and others have opted for Charlie.Surname@...

It's similar with names like Christopher and Alexander, some have emails with the full name, others are Chris.Surname... and Alex.Surname.

I think Charlie has been so commonly used for years that it doesn't feel cutesy to me.

@Boymom123

Thanks everyone! It would be Alexander on BC although I’m assuming people would call him Alex (also I I don't like other shortenings of it really), torn really 🤔 when did choosing a name become so stressful?!
I like Alexander too. Both that and Charles are good names.

Just pick one when your baby is here and stick to it.

VanillaAndOrange · 03/01/2021 22:37

I had a great-uncle, born in about 1904, whose formal name was Charlie. That surprised me when I first heard about it, as I thought names like Charlie as full names was a more modern trend, but it didn't seem to hold him back - he died a rich man (and left me some money Smile )

Normally I'm in favour of the traditional full version on the BC but I really don't like Charles, so I might make an exception for Charlie.

It should be Charles. I've known lots of chaps called Charles who are known as Charlie, there is nothing 'cutesy' about it, it's a classic, male name.

Daddyatethemincepies · 03/01/2021 19:41

I love boyish names for men, and I know some adult Charlie's and I find it a very charming name for both adult and child. I like Alex as well. Two good names.

FluffyEggsontoast · 03/01/2021 19:34

I know a couple of adult Charlie's
Name sounds perfect as a toddler and as an adult I think
The adult Charlie I know is very manly and rugged - suits name perfectly

partyatthepalace · 03/01/2021 19:34

I don’t think Charlie is cutesy but I do think it sounds like a nickname, so I would call him Charles.

Alex ditto nice, but I’d call him Alexander.

Alex is obviously unisex but I think Charlie is still mainly male.

I know an adult Charlie whos beardy and hardy outdoorsy, would never have imagined his name didnt suit him/was cutsie.

gottakeeponmovin · 03/01/2021 19:19

I don't think Charlie is cutesy at all that said I also don't think it's a name. The name is charles I don't like the shortened versions of names being used as the full name personally

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/01/2021 19:00

It's borderline for me (like Harry), so I would use Charles on the BC personally. ie/y ending names do often sound a bit cute to me (unlike fellow nicknames Jack, Max etc).

But I think Charlie is established/popular enough in it's own right that it's easier to get way with for a grown man (unlike more trendy nn's Alfie, Archie etc imo), if you really love Charlie but hate Charles.

Alex is too unisex as a given name for my taste, although I love Alexander.

Lonelycrab · 03/01/2021 18:51

Not massively a fan. I think Charles nn Charlie yes though, like pp.

My middle name is Charles fwiw. I actually didn’t like it back then as growing up, my mates made “posh” gags. Doesn’t bother me now of course.

Dogissue · 03/01/2021 18:40

Its only cutesy on a toddler. Landlord of my local is a Charlie. Huge skinhead beer guzzling type (lovely bloke though)!

WhoLettheCatOut · 03/01/2021 18:37

I know a very serious and sensible grown up Charlie. It's a fine name.

ProperVexed · 03/01/2021 18:35

I know a 6'7" rugby playing Charlie. I wouldn't like to tell him that his name is cutesy! (It's a great name for boy or man, imo.)

Defiantly41 · 03/01/2021 18:33

I used to work (indirectly) for Sir Charlie Mayfield, former chairman of the John Lewis Partnership. Perfectly dignified and suited his name.

yankeedoodledandee · 03/01/2021 18:33

I like this name but wondering what it’d be like on a man?

There are literally thousands of adult men being called 'Charlie' every day of the week. It's fine.

littlemisslozza · 03/01/2021 18:29

I know adults called Charlie and have known babies and toddlers called Alex (Alexander). Both perfectly nice at any age.

MoltenLasagne · 03/01/2021 18:27

I've known adult Charlies and it didn't sound cutesy on either of them. One was a builder, one in finance if that helps?
