Any thoughts on Lilian?

I’m not sure about it but DH really likes it!

Lovely.

Dugee · 04/01/2021 17:49

Love it. And shortened to Lily as an affectionate / small child name makes it perfect.

KipperTheFrog · 04/01/2021 17:45

Love Lilian, was on the list for DD1. It can be varied a lot so suitable for all ages.

@midsomermurderess

What about Lilias instead. I think it's the Scottish form.
We’re trying to find something that reflects DH’s South African heritage whilst still being recognisable in the UK. Lilian is after the SA activist Lilian Ngoyi

I love the name Lilian. Sweet for a child - Lilli - cool for a teen - Lil - and stunning for an adult in its full form

MercyBodle · 03/01/2021 22:21

I really like Lilian.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 03/01/2021 20:26

Have you considered Lilias? I prefer it to Lilian and prefer both to Lily. Lilian and Lilias are elegant 40s film star names to me, like Vivienne and Ava, rather than old lady names, like Elsie and Edie.

@Whatsyouremergency

I’ve got a Lillian, with a double L. Goes by Lilly or Lil Grin If your planning any more, it’s hard for littlies to say so now she’s also Ninny Grin
She’s definitely my last😂

I quite like it. It,s my mums name, she dislikes it and goes by her middle name. Only uses Lillian on official papers.

I don’t really want flowery and girly. I want classic but maybe a little unusual.

I like it a lot. I think it is fresher than Lily - which I also like. I do know a young Lily (early 20s) who changed her name to Lilian in her early teens, as she thought Lily too flowery and girly.

HeddaGarbled · 03/01/2021 19:52

I really like it.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/01/2021 19:50

Lillian does feel a bit dated (Lily is much more classic, if very popular). It also has the "one or two L's" confusion so she'll often have to spell it.

However Lillian has some nice namesakes, is pretty sounding, and due a comeback soon (fits in with the retro Evelyn, Vivienne, Florence, Iris trend) - so you might as well be ahead of the crowd!

Chilldonaldchill · 03/01/2021 18:11

I love Lilian. One of the most beautiful women I know (inside and out) is called Lilian. She's half Malaysian.

SmilingSimon · 03/01/2021 14:01

Love Lilian. If not sure, is Lydia an option?

EdgeOfACoin · 03/01/2021 13:54

It's more grown up than Lily.

I always think Lily sounds a bit wet and wimpy (though I realise I'm in the minority and loads of people love it!)

I don't love Lilian. I would put it in the same bracket as Florence and Nancy in terms of 'feel'.

@partyatthepalace

Quite like it, probably due a revival.

It was originally a form of Elizabeth, so you could call her that as a full name if you aren't certain.

Unfortunately Elizabeth doesn’t work with our surname 😕

Buzzer3555 · 03/01/2021 12:53

My daughter was going to be a Lilian after my late grandmother. We ended up with Lily as it paid homage to grandma but was a bit more modern

Sexnotgender · 03/01/2021 12:53

I believe it’s Lilian but I’ll make absolutely sure obviously.

NoMoreFlowers · 03/01/2021 12:52

The title in the Wiki page has her name as Lillian but the narrative has it as Lilian.

Sexnotgender · 03/01/2021 12:49

7 months pregnant?! What a dick. I’m sorry Flowers
