I’ve changed usernames for this....

My name is Selene, I wouldn’t recommend it tbh.

Nobody can pronounce it, I have people who’ve known me for years who still try and call me celine - it’s like Selene doesn’t even register in their
Heads as a name.

There’s only so many times you can correct people before it’s just uncomfortable - they don’t do it on purpose.

Everything comes spelled wrong, no matter how many times you correct them everything arrives addressed to Selena - which is a huge pain for official things.

And it’s so uncommon that not only have I never met another one, but no-one I’ve met has ever met another one... and I’m pretty easily googleable with very little information.

Purplekitchen · 05/01/2021 08:56

I prefer Céline.
I also like Celeste, Estelle, Solange and Sabine.

Whatthedoodle · 05/01/2021 08:48

I like it. It’s similar to the name we’ve picked. We wanted to have the nn CeCe without choosing the name Cecelia so had thought about Celeste but it really didn’t suit our other children’s names so we’ve opted for Celina. I have a name that isn’t spelt the way it sounds or you’d think it was spelt and honestly it isn’t too much trouble having to correct people on one or two letters so I don’t think Selene opposed to Celine would be too much trouble. Or maybe it just doesn’t bother me as much as it should.

partyatthepalace · 03/01/2021 17:54

It's OK - if you are pronouncing with 2 syllables I prefer Selena.

If you want to use 3 syllables - which I think is really nice and the original pronunciation - than I'd go with Selene as people will be less likely to default to Celine Dion pronunciation.

But I would probably spell it Celine if you want to pronounce it with 2 syllables just for easiness.

MamaLoLo1 · 02/01/2021 23:57

I also really like the French Solène (so-len)

MrsBobDylan · 02/01/2021 22:48

Lovely. Am not not keen on Celeste because I knew one who was a bit of a show off and the name just seemed to amplify her big head.

Changeythenamey · 02/01/2021 20:17

Love it! It’s a gorgeous name. I don’t think Selene is much more uncommon than Celine.

Robbybobtail · 02/01/2021 20:07

It’s a lovely name, I also love Serena and Sybil (Cybille?) I prefer the Celine spelling though. Celeste is nice also.

ILoveStickers · 02/01/2021 20:03

Lovely. I think I might go with Selena, but Selene is also lovely, either as Seh-lee-nee or Seh-leen.

As pps have said, Selene is Greek for moon, or the goddess of the moon. Céline is from the Roman family name Caelinus, and has no connection to it.

Firebird83 · 02/01/2021 19:24

I like the seh-LEE-nee pronunciation.

MimiDaisy11 · 02/01/2021 11:55

I wish before people accused OPs of making up names or using weird spellings they'd look up the name.

MimiDaisy11 · 02/01/2021 11:54

I like it. I also like Selena.

Chilldonaldchill · 02/01/2021 10:30

I prefer Celeste.
I don't dislike Selene (which I would pronounce Sel - EE - nee) but I think it will be a lifetime of people pronouncing it like Celine.
(And I don't even know if my pronunciation is correct!)

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 02/01/2021 01:23

Celeste is okay (although I think of the fictional elephant) but I much prefer Selene. It's gorgeous - such a soft, feminine, elegant name but with a feminist kick thanks to the Moon Goddess links; I'm not sure why it isn't more popular?

Using the Latin (Selena) or French (Celine) varients loses the name some of it's original charm imo. Yes in ancient Greece they would likely have pronounced the name more like "Seh - lehn -eh" , but I think most people would assume/use the "Seh - leen" pronunciation now (I think both are equally nice).

It's a name with a lot of history - Cleopatra's daughter with Marc Anthony was named Selene after the moon Goddess.

If you want a heavenly/moon themed name then another choice is the classy Celia (which also has lovely Shakespearean links).

Pieceofpurplesky · 02/01/2021 00:34

Delphine

stickygotstuck · 01/01/2021 23:55

Celéne and Selene are not the same name.

As pp said, Selene is the name of the Moon Goddess, it basically means Moon.

And it is pronounced Seh-lEh-neh.

It's beautiful OP. If it's the meaning you like, you can simplify things by going with Luna. Also beautiful. Just a thought.

daisypond · 01/01/2021 23:51

Three syllables. It’s more similar to Selena than Celine, both foreign variants of the Greek.

Omeara · 01/01/2021 23:50

I like it but prefer the Celine spelling.

Elouera · 01/01/2021 23:49

Obvioulsy times change, but currently, I can only imagine the constant comparison:

' My name Selene, like Celine Dion, but spelt strangely!'

If you must use it, please spell it the more common way. I'd personally avoid it due to the association with the singer though and go with something slightly different.

pippistrelle · 01/01/2021 23:48

Very pretty.

Similar suggestions - Serena, Seraphina

DramaAlpaca · 01/01/2021 23:48

Selene is a perfectly acceptable spelling. I also agree with @daisypond that it should technically have three syllables, but pronounced with two syllables it's still fine.

It's a beautiful, elegant name, as is Celeste. I slightly prefer Celeste actually.

madcatladyforever · 01/01/2021 23:45

Oh yes just love it, who would not love a Goddess of the Moon.

covidaintacrime · 01/01/2021 23:44

It has three syllables, I think

Really? So "Sell-ee-knee"? I was just basing it off of the Céline Dion pronunciation Grin

daisypond · 01/01/2021 23:44

@StylishMummy

The correct spelling is Céline
It really isn’t. Selene is the correct original spelling.
daisypond · 01/01/2021 23:43

Meant to add, possible pronunciation problems. It has three syllables, I think - with the final -e pronounced like other Greek names. Penelope, Hermione etc.
