Sophie - boring or classic?

We really like the name Sophie but I’m concerned that it has been too overused in recent years. What are your thoughts please?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
bookworm14 · 31/12/2020 20:41

It’s classic (and is dropping down the popularity list). Go for it.

DramaAlpaca · 31/12/2020 20:31

I see it as traditional rather than classic, but it's not in the least bit boring. I love the name and don't care one bit about popularity.

BumbleBeegu · 31/12/2020 20:29

Beautiful name OP. Much nicer than many of the currently 'trendy' names bandied about on MN. Classically beautiful...how could that ever be boring? I don't understand how people are saying this to be honest! All the classically beautiful names get called boring on here...names like Alice, Emma, Emily, Rebecca...lovely names. Go for it ❤️

jellybe · 31/12/2020 19:02

Classic but I prefer Sophia.

danascully96 · 31/12/2020 19:01

Wet to me, but nice and classic, I’d say. Although I don’t personally know any older folks named Sophie and I don’t see the name Sophie appear in old movies... so maybe it’s more of a vintage resurrected with such great popularity for the past few decades that it’s become a modern classic? Anyway, it’s a fine name either way and not as boring as Sarah by any stretch.

EileenGC · 31/12/2020 18:59

Love it!

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 31/12/2020 18:56

It's a classic (and one of the few names ending in -ie I like - others are Sylvie, Amelie, Coralie and Rosalie, because they also don't sound too cutesy imo).

Sophie also has a lovely meaning, but with Sophia and Sofia also in the top 30 too - I think it feels too overused personally (like all the Evie's, Eva's, Ava's and Evelyn's or Isabelle's, Isabella's and Arabella's - the names just blend together).

PlantPotting · 31/12/2020 18:27

If you look at the statistics, the popularity of the name has fallen each and every year since the mid 1990s
It will have left the top 30 by the time the official stats are released.
Much rarer than it used to be
I love it

ADRIENNEthroughbloodshoteyes · 31/12/2020 18:26

It’d beautiful but it’s sooooooo overused right now.

As is Isabel. They are both lovely names to say out loud, they feel elegant, but they are ten a penny too.

partyatthepalace · 31/12/2020 18:23

It’s very popular, but it’s been pretty actively used since the 70s (like Emma) so I think it’s pretty much a classic now. If you aren’t worried about having a few around go for it.

Fancycrackers · 31/12/2020 18:18

I like it. Much nicer than Sophia which I imagine is more popular.

RecipeStealingBitch · 31/12/2020 18:16

I love it

MrsWobble3 · 31/12/2020 18:15

I think it may be my favourite name. I was worried it was too popular so didn’t use it for dd1. But then before dd1 was 3 months old I had been introduced to 3 other babies with the name we chose instead and no Sophie’s. So dd2 is Sophie.

RandomUsernameHere · 31/12/2020 18:09

I think it's lovely! I hear it a lot more among people my age than among children, so to me it is quite unusual for a baby/child and not overused at all.

daisypond · 31/12/2020 18:08

I like it. I know a Sophie aged in their 90s, and ones in their 60s, 50s, 40s all the way to teens and toddlers. It’s nice.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 31/12/2020 18:04

In DS’s school there’s a joke that if you don’t know a girls name you assume it’s ‘Sophie’ or ‘Sophia’. Loads of them (6th form).

Nice name but... so many of them!

june2007 · 31/12/2020 18:03

Classical but a mit "meh". I think last year we had a sophie in every room at the nursery where I work.

Soooh · 31/12/2020 18:01

@lyinginthegutterstaringatstars silly as an adult!!! That makes me laugh as a late 40s adult. Have never felt it was a silly name for an adult.

Meredithgrey1 · 31/12/2020 18:00

I think with all classic names, some people are going to think they’re boring (and with all boring names, some people will think they’re classic).
I think Sophie is classic, but I prefer those sorts of classic names. I have an unusual name, with an unusual spelling, so perhaps favoured the opposite when picking DD’s name, which is along a similar vein to Sophie (not in sound but in a similar classic/possibly seen as boring way)

AlexaShutUp · 31/12/2020 18:00

I think it's a lovely name.

JustanotherTuesday · 31/12/2020 17:57

I think it is a pretty name. I only know one Sophie, she is two years old.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 31/12/2020 17:57

Names are only ever a maximum of two of the following:-

Beautiful
Classical
Unusual

For the simple reason that if you find one that is all three then every other bugger will nab it and then it won’t be unusual any more.

Sophie is beautiful and classical. That is the best two to have in my view.

lyinginthegutterstaringatstars · 31/12/2020 17:57

Very cute for a baby but silly for an adult. Very boring.

Cam2020 · 31/12/2020 17:57

I like it. Sophia was on my shortlist.

SirVixofVixHall · 31/12/2020 17:55

Classic. The only Sophie I know is around 59, and an absolute beauty.
