So we've now got a short list for baby number two. Still not sure if boy or girl, was wondering what your thought were on our chosen names?...

Boy:
Sidney or Rowan

Girl:
Lois or Rosa

I only know female Rowans. I like it a lot for a girl. Otherwise Rosa, but I prefer Rose.
Not keen on Sidney or Lois.

Sheleg · 30/12/2020 13:50

Sidney is a dirty old man name.

The others are nice.

LastChanceBalloon · 30/12/2020 10:34

Your boys names aren’t to my taste, but I LOVE your girls names. Both beautiful.

PlantPotting · 30/12/2020 10:33

Yes Caffi it is an interesting one. As you say it's currently still used predominantly for boys in England but the name is solely used for girls in Scotland. The girl (and boy) graphs for the name in America are going steeply upwards too so I wonder if it will transition to be seen as a girl name some time soon, the way names like Hilary and Kerry have in the past. It's about to enter the top 200 names for girls in America. Throughout history, once a threshold number of girls get given a names it stops being used at all for boys. We will see
I see it as a girls name but that's because it's my daughters name. The tree itself is fairly small, pretty and dainty which lends itself to a girls name in my head. Pretty pathetic of me to gender a tree, I know.

Scrap that, dark greener suggests Rowan is still mostly used for boys: names.darkgreener.com/#rowan

CaffiSaliMali · 30/12/2020 08:52

I really love Rosa.

Which pronunciation of Lois are you planning to use, the English (low-iss) or the Welsh (loyce)?

I like Sidney and Rowan although I think the latter is increasingly popular and also increasingly used for girls which may or may not bother you.

PlantPotting · 29/12/2020 20:38

I really like Sidney, it's outside the top 200 names too so not common yet is an established name. I like it's meaning
Rowan is my baby girls name. Pros: nice pretty nature name. Cons: I didn't realise how much it's risen in charts nor how popular Roman is becoming. There's lots of similar names so I sometimes I feel like it's not special enough, especially when I'm asked if the name is spelt with a W, N, H or M in the middle. I don't like the natural shortening to Row.

I really like both of your girl names. Preference for Lois as I like it's meaning and think it's more distinctive.

Superstardjs · 29/12/2020 20:15

Like both the girls names. I like neither of the boy names, Sid is redolent of Cockney geezer, though future generations will not know Sid James. Rowan, for me, is like Francis, it sounds like a thin, pale child.

DramaAlpaca · 29/12/2020 20:09

I'm not mad on Sidney. Rowan is OK, but I think it has a more feminine feel.

I like Lois and Rosa.

Sandcastles09 · 29/12/2020 19:52

Rowan or Rosa!

SallyCinnamon3009 · 29/12/2020 19:41

Rosa and Rowan love them both. Lois is growing on me as well come to think of it

crabette · 29/12/2020 19:37

I really like Rosa.

Think Sidney is a love or hate one, and I'm not in the love camp unfortunately - but it's a perfectly good name! I like Rowan, and know a male in his sixties with the spelling Roan, which I always liked.

Rosa and Roan are lovely.

TildaTurnip · 29/12/2020 19:32

I really dislike Sidney. Sid is awful. I know two female Sydneys and no male Sidneys. It’s similar to Stanley and other miserable sounding names.

Love the others though!

DrWard · 29/12/2020 19:27

Rowan is rising in popularity at the moment and is a unisex name so some may associate it as a girls name (I see it as a boys name though). I like it, but I personally prefer Sidney.

Rosa is my favourite of the girls names and is in my shortlist too.

Quercus3 · 29/12/2020 19:23

I adore them all! Lovely list.

Sidney is on our list for boys, and Lois, Rowan and Rose are on our girls list (I love Rosa too though). Don't think you can go wrong, although apparently Rowan is increasing in popularity.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/12/2020 19:17

Rowan and Rosa are nice. I find Sidney and Lois a little dated.

PurBal · 29/12/2020 19:07

I know 3 Rowans. All boys. It's one of my favourite boys names. Your girls names are very different from each other and I like both.

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 29/12/2020 18:42

Rowan and Rosa for sure

Joolsin · 29/12/2020 18:39

Sidney and Rosa - by far

TheDaydreamBelievers · 29/12/2020 18:09

Rowan and Rosa (assuming these are not boy/girl twins)

FluffyEggsontoast · 29/12/2020 18:05

Love Sidney and Lois and Rosa.
Rowan is alright but too popular for me now. I know quite a few girls and boys, and lots of RoMans about now.
Ronnie, Rory, Reuben all in the top one hundred. Rohan, Roan. All blend into one for me.

Bluesername · 29/12/2020 17:45

Sidney and Rosa

ThirdTimeLuckyIHope · 29/12/2020 17:40

I think Sidney and Rosa are very nice

Whatsyourflava · 29/12/2020 17:11

Love 3 of your names: Sidney, Rosa and Lois
Used to like Rowan before it got too trendy

Sidney - love this name and love the nickname Sid. Unusual but familiar - the perfect mix.

Rowan - unisex in England but prefer this name for a girl (it's a girl name in Scotland for example and slowly going that way in America). Hate the nickname Row and find the name extremely '2020 trendy'. It's rising fast in the top 100 for first time in history at the same time as other really similar names like Roman with M (which is the fastest rising boy names). So it's already getting popular in its own right but feels even more so with the all similar sounding names that are also popular (Roman in particular but also Rohan, Ronan, Reuben).

Girl:
Lois - love this name, numbers are falling too so a good time to pick it. Less than 200 babies a year.
Rosa - adore this name too. also outside the top 150 names so still sounds fresh and underused. Lovely.

CinnamonTeaForMe · 29/12/2020 17:02

Rowan and Rosa.
