Radhika or Shreya?

Looking for a Goddess-related Hindu name, what do you think of Shreya and Radhika? Pros and cons?
Radhika is pronounced Raa-dhi-ka and Shreya, like Freya.

I love Radhika. Taught a fab one a few years back, she was head girl too. One of those pupils who sticks in your memory for all the right reasons!

mayandjuniper · 13/01/2021 20:34

Think I prefer Shreya as always thought Radhika was a bit clunky. I teach the most delightful child called Diya, have you considered that as a name?

CrazylazyJane · 13/01/2021 20:08

I'm going against the grain but I love Radikha. I taught a lovely little girl called Radikha. I have taught several Shreyas. Nice enough but fairly common girls name jere in West London.

LadyGAgain · 13/01/2021 19:52

Shriya?

Radikha reminds me of radishes. I don't know why.

CrazyToast · 13/01/2021 19:45

I like Jyoti but imagine westerners may struggle with it. Parvati and Lakshmi are nice.

I prefer Shreya to Radhika.

SunshineCake · 13/01/2021 19:13

Shreya is lovely. Easy to say and spell. I know one and she is lovely.

teuer · 13/01/2021 19:10

I like Radhika most. It’s not a name I’ve come across (worked in inner city primary with a large Asian community) either. Mind you I’ve not come across a Shreya either now I think about it.

Yogaposer · 13/01/2021 19:06

I love them both.

EdgeOfACoin · 30/12/2020 06:51

I like both. I know a male Shrey - nobody has problems pronouncing his name.

At first glance I might think Radhika is pronounced Radeeka, with the emphasis on the second syllable, but people unfamiliar with the name would pick up the proper pronunciation quickly enough once you told them.

No child is going to call them Shrek or Radish. I entirely disagree with that PP Confused

HeadlessGummyBears · 30/12/2020 03:49

Both look pretty but Shreya sounds nice and looks easier to pronounce and spell than Radhika. I think the “h” in the latter would throw me off because it looks like it could be a silent “h” and then again it might not be.

neonjumper · 29/12/2020 22:45

@percheron67

Shrek and Radish> Please, no.
Really? I thought we were past this type of nonsense.

Shreya and Radhika both lovely and both very popular in schools I have taught in.

Luckily, I can't say I have ever heard other children or the adults make fun of the names , unlike the poster above .

CommanderBurnham · 29/12/2020 22:33

Radhika is so pretty. Maybe spelt Raadhika?

covidaintacrime · 29/12/2020 22:02

Padma?

percheron67 · 29/12/2020 21:56

Shrek and Radish> Please, no.

HazelWong · 29/12/2020 21:56

I don't either but British people do trip over it

diddlediddle · 29/12/2020 21:40

I don't think it's hard at all 🤷🏼‍♀️

HazelWong · 29/12/2020 21:26

Why is the shr sound so hard though when there are plenty of English words with it in? Shrink, shrub, shrug, shrimp, shriek...

TheTigerIsSleepy · 29/12/2020 20:52

The shr sound is weirdly incredibly difficult for the Western world to pronounce

villamariavintrapp · 29/12/2020 00:35

Love shreya, it was on my list.

Extrapepperoni · 28/12/2020 22:46

As someone with a difficult to spell and pronounce name, I would pick Shreya over Radhika (if that is your shortlist) - the 'dh' sound is really hard for the Western accent to nail while like you say, you can easily Shreya like Freya and people would get it. Other ideas:
Meena, Meera, Asha, Priya

JanewaysBun · 28/12/2020 22:42

Shreya my face but both nice

GarlicSoup · 28/12/2020 22:41

@HazelWong

What about Sita? Pretty but easy to spell and pronounce

I also like Parvati

Sita is a beautiful name.
00100001 · 28/12/2020 22:39

But surely, the auspicious letters aren't determined? Or aren't you doing that?

AndThenTheDayBecomesTheNight · 28/12/2020 22:35

Radhika is lovely.

partyatthepalace · 28/12/2020 22:33

I’m not wild about either, but would deffo go for Shreya as she won’t spend her life spelling it.

I think there are prettier goddess names - what about Padma, Ameya, Surasa ???
