Sister and friend have used name! Sirius instead?

So a very good friend gave birth last week and has named her son Theodore. My sister, who is also having a boy, is planning on naming her some Theo.

Which is f*cking annoying because the ONLY boys name I like is Theodore! To be clear this is a terrible coincidence - I had not discussed names with my friend and have only recently started talking about names with my sister. We both shared in the same phonecall that we liked that name so there is no name-swiping involved.

So, Theodore seems like it is out. What does everyone think of Sirius? Are we far enough removed from Harry Potter?

I mean Theodore is a Harry Potter name too 🤷‍♀️

What about Sivus?

Chilldonaldchill · 24/12/2020 15:27

My first thought is Harry Potter, my second is that it's a nice name.
I do prefer Cyrus though.

TicTacTwo · 24/12/2020 15:27

Leo rather than Theo?

IndiaMay · 24/12/2020 15:26

I love Sirius but he was my favourite HP character. What about Remus for a Harry Potter theme?

Could you do Theo? Or Teddy/Ted instead if Theodore. Similar feeling names in my head are Rufus, Rupert, Jasper and Rafferty

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 24/12/2020 15:22

My first thought is ‘dog star’

WestendVBroadway · 24/12/2020 15:01

Not a follower of HP , so did not get the connection at all. I think of Sirius as a star. Surely not everyone will think of HP.

NotImpossible · 24/12/2020 14:57

Obviously that's no use if you wanted to shortern to Theo!

NotImpossible · 24/12/2020 14:56

If you like Ted/Teddy for Theodore then maybe Edward? (I love both names!)

Enko · 24/12/2020 14:53

Dd1 (age 22) is a huge Harry Potter fan she says go for it. Its a nice name.

I like it ( not a hp fan personally)

Yennefer19 · 24/12/2020 14:41

Could you use a nickname of Theodore such as Teddy or Otto.

Theodore means gift of god so names that have the same meaning is Jonathan, Nathaniel or Matthew.

Personally not a fan of Sirius, I do think the Harry Potter reference will always be there, depends if that bothers you or not.

stovetopespresso · 24/12/2020 14:38

we are no longer in touch sadly so at least I have the names I like

stovetopespresso · 24/12/2020 14:38

Agree Leo quite similar. but I'd ignore and call mine the same name regardless. I had this with a friend, she nicked "my" name, then I accidentally "stole" hers for next baby even though she said she told me (I forgot). I had another one and got the first name back Grin

AliceinBunniland · 24/12/2020 14:37

It is probably a popular name at moment

janetmendoza · 24/12/2020 14:31

I always think of Sirius/Saryas as a kurdish name

BertieBob · 24/12/2020 14:29

My friend has a 3 year old Sirius, and he really suits it. He was named after Harry Potter.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 24/12/2020 14:28

Sirous?

Snowy0w1 · 24/12/2020 14:27

Sirius is TERRIBLE!

What about Thaddeus fairly common for old men where I live. Thady (taydee) for short. Not absolutely crazy about it, but it seems like a cross between Theodore and Sirius!

Or , much nicer, what about Marcus, or Fergus? Gaius? or Seth, Silas,

Epponnee · 24/12/2020 14:26

Thaddeus?

Or Hugo? (My friend has a Theo and a Hugo so maybe Hugo would appeal to someone that loves Theo)

PenguinIce · 24/12/2020 14:23

Love the name Theodore but would not use it if my dsis used it first. What about Sebastian (Seb for short), love that name too.

Jumpalicious · 24/12/2020 14:21

Cyrus!

KarmaNoMore · 24/12/2020 14:20

In my family there are 7James, 6 Victorias and cartloads of Marys. Nobody gets confused.

Call him Theo if you wish, there will be other Theos around but that is not half bad enough to call the poor baby Sirius..

Changi · 24/12/2020 14:16

If could cause chaos if you have an IPad or iPhone.

Biscuitsneeded · 24/12/2020 14:13

Agree with Nathaniel as a good alternative. Gabriel? Leo?

EssentialHummus · 24/12/2020 14:13

Silas? Simon?

Nellle · 24/12/2020 14:09

If you love Theodore, your child should be named Theodore.
