advice plz! we are 8 months pregnant with a girl (so time running out on this lol) and the Mrs and I can't agree on the spelling of our little lassie's name. She says Tony (but that sounds like a boys name lol) and I say Toni (which she says sounds "classless"). help!!!

I think Toni would be great for a nickname but would prefer Antonia as that will give her more options in the future if she doesn’t like to be called Toni.

@MalcolmHowes

Thanks for all of the advice out with the original question guys, that's git us thinkin now. Is Toni really such a bud name? Alternatives plz then and the winning name may even win a prize lol Smile
If you like the name, go for it! Don't let other people's opinions dictate your decision. It's not a common name and I think it's nice to have a short, uncommon name 😊

Toni is derived from Antonia (or less commonly Antoinette), whereas Tony derived from Anthony, so for a girl I'd spell it as Toni.

My uncle was Toni.

CodenameVillanelle · 26/12/2020 22:57

Tony is definitely only for men but it's a pretty old fashioned name for boy or girl.

VictoriaSpongeBob · 26/12/2020 22:52

It is most definitely Toni for a girl. I know two Toni's, one is Antonia and one just Toni - both really like the name. It's a fairly common name in southern Italy

Cameleongirl · 26/12/2020 21:17

A quick Google just told me that “Antonia” is a Roman name that means “ priceless” or “praiseworthy”. How lovely to give your daughter a name with that meaning!

I’d go for Antonia, shortened to Toni.

It’s not the best name ... and incredibly dated. It would be like calling a son Gary.

Did you think about any other names?

August20 · 24/12/2020 04:19

For girls it's short for Antonia (or even Antoinette) and spelled Toni.

Toni is not bad it's just that it's a nickname.

MercyBodle · 24/12/2020 04:02

Toni for a girl.
Antonia or Antoinette with nn Toni would be better.

What else was on your shortlist? It might help others to come up with some alternatives.

Toni is very much an 80s (downmarket) name to me. Sorry. Antonia if you must.

partyatthepalace · 23/12/2020 10:30

Please call her Antonia!

You are right that Toni is the female short form, and Tony really does suggest a man. But it’s an old fashioned 70s / 80s sounding name now, so give her some options. She also may really not like having a male sounding name, feminised spelling or no.

YoniAndGuy · 23/12/2020 10:26

Please put Antonia on her birth certificate as the full name!

Then you can call her Toni as planned but she's got another option for when she's an adult. I also know a Toni who HATES her name. It's pretty grim I'm afraid - outdated and just not attractive at all.

Firebird83 · 22/12/2020 23:00

Toni, definitely.

MalcolmHowes · 22/12/2020 21:18

Thanks guys, I think Toni definitely wins the day then lol

Antonia is really lovely.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/12/2020 18:38

My friend Antonia goes by Ana, and loses her (rather well-spoken) shit if anyone calls her Toni. Funnily enough, she'll tolerate Tonia. Nowt as queer as folk 😂

daisypond · 22/12/2020 18:36

Toni for a girl, but not as her official name. Antonia is good. There may be some other names that would serve too - can’t think right now.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 22/12/2020 18:34

I'd really suggest using Antonia on the BC - imo it's kinder to give her more options. You can still call her Toni day to day (Tony is the boys version) but Antonia is much more timeless and classic than just Toni, which has an 80's feel.

FestiveStuffing · 22/12/2020 18:33

Antonia. Tony is a boy's name, Toni is more feminine but doesn't give her many options if she wants a more grown up name when older.
