What are your favourite Tudor names? Why don't we bring a few back into fashion....

If there’s one thing I learnt from the Wolf Hall books it’s that everyone is called Thomas.

It certainly feels like everybody who worked for Henry VIII was called Thomas - I wonder if he chose them on that basis!

But I do love Eden for a boy.

Nice to see Eden in the girls' column.

I can't see Fulke making a come back.

winechateauxjoy · 22/12/2020 18:36

Jasper - that is a fabulous name!

Nell96 · 22/12/2020 18:34

Agnes, but pronounced the French way. And Gwenllian.

Halsall · 22/12/2020 12:29

Jennet. Cecily. Margery. Annis.

I really like all of those actually.

FluffMagnet · 22/12/2020 12:17

Jasper. I love it but DH vetoed. My best friend has used it for her little boy and I was beyond delighted!

PeppermintSoda · 22/12/2020 12:13

Mary and Catherine

YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/12/2020 11:30

I love Elinor.

Paintedmaypole · 22/12/2020 11:27

Fulke and Frideswide I thought were a bit early for Tudor. Tudor names, Katherine, Mary, Anne, Jane, Henry, Richard, Edward are still very much around. Lettice and Jasper are a bit more unusual.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 22/12/2020 10:06

Most are still in circulation:

Henry
Arthur
Richard
John
Catherine
Anne
Elizabeth
Margaret

A few less common ones:
Jasper
Edmund

I've always liked Edmund. I know a young Humphrey.

Frideswide, Fortune and Amphelisia are perhaps a bit out there. That said, I do know a Eunice.

Jennygentle · 22/12/2020 08:53

And Kit

Jennygentle · 22/12/2020 08:53

I always rather liked Arbella

VenusClapTrap · 22/12/2020 08:50

Perkin

Fifthtimelucky · 22/12/2020 08:03

I think many names commonly used in Tudor times are doing pretty well:

Henry, Thomas, Edward, William, Arthur, Catherine/Katherine/Kate and Elizabeth.

Some are classics that were very common until recently, and will no doubt come round again before long. Thinking of names like Jane, Anne, Mary, Francis, Christopher and Richard.

Ellmau · 22/12/2020 01:04

Lettice

OldAndWornOut · 22/12/2020 00:26

I love Prudence too.
