Baby groups?

I'm in the south I hear a lot of:
Olivia, Florence, Ivy
Oliver, Charlie, Harry

In Durham - loads and loads of Oscar and Theos.

Daisy! I’ve met loads.
Evie
Archie
Theodore
Freya

It becomes a lot more likely to come across the same 'unusual' names if you look at location and demographics. Often the names are just coming in to fashion but they catch on among a particular demographic and before you know it the name is really popular. So someone might pick Tiberius or Prunella yet they will be the new Thomas and Phoebe in Hampstead/Edinburgh/Belfast before you know it.

Youre right that you can't predict if you'll meet another with the same name, but you can predict if you're likely to continually run into people with the same name as you throughout a lifetime.

Take the two names Ione and Isla for example.

There could possibly be one class in the country that exists with 2 girls called "Ione" in it. But there will be far more classes with 2 "Isla"s in. Infact running into another baby called Ione would probably be a lovely surprise because it's so rarely used, that'll probably be the only other Ione you meet in your lifetime.
If you're the only Isla in the class then of course you're likely to meet another Isla soon. Whether that be at sports clubs, Uni, future work... you'll meet quite a few.

There's less than 10 babies called Ione a year and around 3,000 Isla's.

Both are lovely names by the way but huge differences in popularity and usage.

If you're someone who is concerned about popularity then the first step is to completely avoid the top 100 names.

You can never tell, we considered a name for DS in 2016 that I would have said was pretty rare (31 babies named it in his birth year) we met another at our local baby group.

Thank you, there were only 7 girls named the name we want in County Durham last year so fingers crossed we’re pretty safe

My dd was one of 52 born in England and Wales. One of these is in her ballet class . They also have rather similar surnames

Wouldn't worry too much to be honest. I've not met any under 3s called Olivia, Amelia, Ava, Isla but I have met two Zeldas. The second mother was not impressed when I mentioned that I knew another little one with the same name.

There is the top 100 for England, and the top 10 for each area. So you can see the top 10 names in the North East.
