Of course they are. Lots of surnames are descriptive in both Irish and English.

I'm not buying the Sulieman link at all. Sullivan/O'Sullivan/Súilleabhan is a fine old Munster name.

As far as I'm aware it's an anglicisation of the Irish 'súil' which means 'eye' and 'dubh' which means 'black'. So a person with dark eyes.

Nothing to do with Solomon.

"Súil" would be a lovely nn - it means "hope" as well as "eye".
And Sullivan in Irish is spelt "Súilleabhán" - I muddled up the spelling on my earlier post..

Sullivan is English spelling of
Súilleibheán / Súilleimheán which is probably the global name Suleiman (Solomon).
It's an epic name. Go for it.
