What do you think of Wilder for a boy? Do you think it works? I also like Ricer too☺️.

“ When I used to teach, I would have seen this on a class list and wondered what fresh hell I was in for. ”

Yawn. I’m a teacher too. I’d rather have a Wilder than my five thousandth Jessica/Harry/Charlie/Amelia.

MsTSwift · 19/12/2020 15:30

Mine was Lorelai which is out there anyway but with our surname (two syllable both begin with l) it would have been properly mental tongue twister. Worse dh went along with it he had no excuse!

TicTacTwo · 19/12/2020 13:06

Typo for River

GintyMcGinty · 19/12/2020 11:09

Awful sorry but Ricer is even worse so if you must then go Wilder

Is Ricer even a serious suggestion?

Enko · 19/12/2020 11:04

Not keen on either

greenlentilandturmeric · 19/12/2020 11:02

@MsTSwift

It’s bad. Maybe you have a temporary mid pregnancy name madness? I know I did I came up with some right horrors for dd1. She is 14 now and 🙄 about my choices she would hate to be called those mad names. Came to my senses fortunately her name is amazing and she loves it.
I did too! I came up with Agamemnon for DS1. It's a fabulous Greek name, of course, but we are not Greek and it would have seemed a little odd for us to have done it.
Aethelthryth · 19/12/2020 11:01

River is just about ok
Ricer is ridiculous- see potato ricer above
Wilder, as a pp has said, sets the child up to fail. It says what sort of child you want; and he may be nothing like that.

greenlentilandturmeric · 19/12/2020 10:59

I really like Wilder. And those sort of surname type names are not generally to my taste.

Firebird83 · 19/12/2020 10:57

It’s very American.

Where I’m from, “Wild” was a euphemism for mentally unstable

Where I am from Grace means elegance of movement, maybe Grace's parents should have waited to see that this name does not suit her, or that Hope is the most miserable complaining child ever. Grin

ReindeerAntlerLights · 19/12/2020 07:58

At least he won't have to put his surname initial on every piece of work he does in school because there are other Wilders in the class.

My son's name was classed as "unusual" at the time, he is now a teenager and his name is in the uk top 100 now.

I volunteer in a large primary school. We have children named after or definitely a nod to Game of Thrones, Star Trek, Star Wars, Battle Star Gallatica, The Matrix, popular TV or culture stuff. Better than being the 3rd or 4th Oliver or Olivia in the class. We had 5 Isabel/Isobels in one year group once, 4 Williams, 4 Charlies etc.

What I am saying is we have heard it all. It isn't like you dipped into a scrabble box and chose random letters. Wilder has been around for hundreds of years.

NameChange84 · 19/12/2020 07:54

@TheYearOfSmallThings

basically it’s equivalent to essentially calling your child a little shit is it not?

More than that, it says "I've thought long and hard about it and I'm really hoping my child will be a little shit. I think that would be cool. And I feel so strongly about this that I want everyone to know how I feel, every day of my son's life".

This.

It’s really really bad. When I used to teach, I would have seen this on a class list and wondered what fresh hell I was in for. Not necessarily from little Wilder, who I would pray wasn’t a child who lived up to his unhinged name but from his parents who must’ve hoped their child would be some sort of feral nightmare to have called him this name.

Where I’m from, “Wild” was a euphemism for mentally unstable. Or the jungle. Or a very out there sex life. At its most positive, it means untamed/untameable - “we had to rid of the cat to the RSPCA as it was too wild and kept attacking the baby”.

It’s so bad that I thought you were serious about Ricer.

River, while not my taste, is infinitely better. I hate the names Ryder, Archer etc but I’d urge you quite passionately to use something like that rather than naming a poor innocent child, Wilder Angry.

SugarCoatIt · 19/12/2020 07:43

Wilder - awful

River - quite like it, one of Jamie Oliver's kids is called it and at first I thought hmm, but it's grown on me

elfran · 19/12/2020 07:38

I knew a Wilder growing up - the little brother of a friend of mine, he'd be about 30 now. Actually come to think of it, I'm not sure if it was his first or middle name (the other one was equally unusual but more British / old-fashioned).

I remember his usual (for suburban Canada in the 90s) but stylish name caused some dinner table discussions in my family when he was born! I don't think anybody would bat an eye now.

tierthreetwoone · 19/12/2020 07:11

As in Chris OP?

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 19/12/2020 07:05

Wilder actually has quite a nice sound, but I think its connotations would put me off. River is nice, but relatively popular now.

TheVanguardSix · 19/12/2020 07:00

Wiley or Wyatt are alternatives. Ryder, as well.
Wilder... I probably wouldn't use it.

Maigue · 19/12/2020 06:57

I don’t mind it, but it being the comparative form of the adjective would bother me.

notanothernamechange766 · 19/12/2020 06:52

I like it. I associate it with the boxer.

KatherineJaneway · 19/12/2020 06:43

I'd assume you were American

FartnissEverbeans · 19/12/2020 06:37

I actually think Wilder is really cool. Too cool for me to use unfortunately!

I think it’s becoming quite popular on the US?

DramaAlpaca · 18/12/2020 19:00

Wilder would be a very odd first name.

I quite like River.

NeedToKnow101 · 18/12/2020 18:58

Wilder? I love it!
River is nice too.

ApocalypseNowt · 18/12/2020 18:24

Wilder will rebel and become an accountant or tax lawyer. I mean they're pretty lucrative careers so I say go for it.
