Love Daphne as a name

RuthW · 18/12/2020 22:21

Daphne definitely. There are Daisys everywhere (or is it Daisies)

@colourmylife

Thanks everyone! Really helpful. I do love Daisy but agree it is a bit overused. Daphne seems to be a bit of a marmite name which surprises me as it has that popular ee sound. We also like Violet so adding that to the mix.
Violet is also beautiful!

Daphne is an absolutely beautiful name. It would be on our list but my DH isn't keen. We also live in the north west, where it would sound very much like 'Daphne Moon' from Frasier...

I really dislike Daisy as a name - overly girly and a bit twee, along the same lines as Poppy. Also reminds me of cows. If you want a floral name, I'd go for Iris or Rose / Rosa.

I have a daphne and have had so many positive comments on her name. If it helps, she is turning out to be an incredible human being... clever, kind, just wonderful and her name suits her perfectly.

danascully96 · 18/12/2020 14:47

Oh, and Delphine is nice! It means “dolphin,” but you have the nn “Della” if that suits you.

danascully96 · 18/12/2020 14:46

Daphne! Scooby Doo is a great namesake and I’ve also recently been watching Kate Jackson’s Dark Shadows, so Daphne always seems fit for a glamorous woman.

Daisy is not my favorite — it sounds like a name that belongs to an airhead m, as The Great Gatsby will attest. My apologies if that’s too rude :(

Similarly glamorous names:
Susannah nn “Suki”
Violet
Stella
Cecily (means “blind,” though)

My favorite names (if this matters at all):
Laura
Lily
Julia
Anna nn “Annie”
Charlotte
Gwyneth

Daphne.

Daisy is very sweet but I would only use it as a nickname.

mangothoughts · 18/12/2020 01:39

Daphne is just awful sorry
Would have to go with Daisy although always think of Daisy the cow. Delphie is pretty?

Thismustbelove · 18/12/2020 01:37

Daphne by a country mile.

Daisy is a nickname and not a particularly nice one at that.

Mally2020 · 18/12/2020 01:23

Love both options but prefer daisy. Do not listen to above suggestions of delphine unless you want your child to be compared to and bullied bc of belle delphine

IdblowJonSnow · 18/12/2020 00:22

I like daisy a lot but it's very popular.

Delphine is really nice!

Pulchra76 · 18/12/2020 00:18

Daphne....if she would have a brother by the name of Henry, Joe or Horace, or a sister Maggie, don’t do it and go for Daisy 😊

Ellmau · 18/12/2020 00:14

I like Daphne.

Kanaloa · 17/12/2020 23:51

Both really nice. I slightly prefer Daphne since I know lots of little girls named Daisy and I’ve never met a Daphne.

JanewaysBun · 17/12/2020 23:50

Daphne! I am genuinely still a little upset that DH vetoed it as always though to would have a daughter called that. It's elegant, sophisticated, Daphne is smart and witty and drop dead gorgeous!

Daisy Is fine too

Firebird83 · 17/12/2020 22:45

Daphne is lovely. Daisy is nice too but not as elegant as Daphne.

Calmondeck · 17/12/2020 21:22

Definitely Daphne. I don’t think Daisy works well for adults. I had a classmate Daisy who was a bit of a ferocious character. A floral name was so out of place on her. She nicknamed herself Dee.

lilly2000 · 17/12/2020 21:07

Love daphne! Also Delphine or Delphina are so pretty and similar

nosswith · 17/12/2020 21:06

I'd choose Daisy of the two, but agree it has become overused.

Porridgeoat · 17/12/2020 21:05

Delphine

TenThousandSpoons · 17/12/2020 21:04

I like both but think Daisy is prettier and Daphne (I know one age 7) gets called Daph which I’m not keen on.

Sausagedog1 · 17/12/2020 20:57

I love Daphne, could you deal with her being Daph or Daffers for short? That's the only thing that puts me off.
Daisy is fine but a bit more twee and girly.

LightDrizzle · 17/12/2020 02:07

Hmmm... I think Daphne is due a comeback. It’s actually a lovely sounding name.
