@laurielo Firstly why would a teacher have a stand off with a child? Not very professional imo?

Young children misspell things all the time. This teacher genuinely thought the child was confused about the spelling of her name.

Why don't you give your child a normal name and then misspell their nickname any strange way you like? At least then your child will have the option in the future, and won't be embarrassed handing their CV to a future employer who will think they can't even spell their own name.

Or do what you want. The only person affected by this is your own child.

newnamenancy · 20/12/2020 11:16

@laurielo anytime 😉

P.s Callie is nice, that's a good one

emilybrontescorsett · 20/12/2020 10:03

I don't like any of them.

And yes for the love of God, spell them correctly and don't use 'yoonique' spellings, unless of course you hate your child and want to cause them a lifetime of pain.

TheNanny23 · 20/12/2020 05:44

Misspelling a name does not make it more individual; this is naming a human being not an opportunity to showcase how quirky and convention defying you are.

I showed my husband your list and he with genuine concern said if you are dyslexic could a friend or family member help you check the right spellings.

Phoebe is the name of a Greek titaness and has been used for thousands of years. The idea that you shove an I in to make it Phoebie and that makes it somehow better is just cringeworthy. People (like my husband) will assume that Phoebie’s parents couldn’t spell, or worse that they were poorly educated, and definitely not educated in the classics from which the name is derived.

By all means give your kid a really unique name but please for the love of god give them one that is spelt right!

I like Mabel spelt properly and Iris. I don't like any of the others.

And while I get some names have different spellings, (my own is one of them) I think whacky misspellings is trying too hard. So Jayne or Katherine is fine. Maebel and Pollie would have me thinking the parents couldn't spell. Sorry.

Ellmau · 20/12/2020 00:11

Iris is beautiful.

ElGuardiandenoche · 19/12/2020 23:30

How about Piper for a boy? Though I like your choice of Reid as I'm a Fantastic Four fan.

laurielo · 19/12/2020 22:34

@cathyonthebloc

Reid is spelt READ
It's an actual name?

Read: as in you read a book
Reid: red haired (name)
Reed: a plant

@AliceMcK

Nuala or Fionnuala as the full version, you can use Finn or Nuala for short.

Jaxson (jax) has become very popular with sons of anarchy. Personally I like Reid of the boys although it’s not something I’d choose.

Ignore comments about spellings, I like traditional spellings but there are lots of people who don’t use traditional spellings.

Yes love Jax for short! Ah yes Sons of Anarchy Grin Thanks Alice Smile

@Hoowhoowho

GIRLS:

Pollie- prefer Polly spelling but I hate ie endings generally
Posie- ditto Posy is fine but prefer as short for Josephine/Primrose
Maebel- if the Mae spelling is important I’d go all out and go for Maebelle
Thalia- fine
Iris - fine
Nuala- fine but a bit dated.

Wondered if you’d considered names like Callie or Cassie or Hallie which naturally end in ie or if you’d like the Leigh names eg Carleigh, Ashleigh

BOYS:

Jaxson- prefer Jaxon as S a bit pointless
Lockie- fine
Reid- fine

See Callie I've only ever known to be spelt 'Cally' but I prefer tour way of spelling

As for Ashleigh I hate that way of spelling but love Ashlie/Ashlee but that's another can of worms Brew

@newnamenancy

Thanks for explaining your thinking.

For girls you seem to want a fairly traditional girly name but spelt in a unique way. Bonus points for ie ending.

For boys you don't want anything Scottish, with a leaning towards surnames, and again, unique spelling.

You are fairly confident that your child won't mind having to spell their name out each time they say it, as your husband really enjoys doing this daily.

My suggestions for girls:

Rubie
Roesie
Peeonie
Phoebie
Ofeelia
Loocie
Topsie
Mopsie
Maesie
Nancie

Boys:
Smyth
Wryte
Reed
Read
Vynce
Bruwn
Macks
Machs
Feeo
Cartyr
Jonson
Bradie
Edwyrd

Let me know if you'd like more Smile

Phoebie Maesie Nancie (actually love this, no joke)

Boys:

Wryte
Reed
Cartyr

Some great names there hun Wink

@applesauce1

OP, from your previous posts, clearly you're not likely to take into consideration the opinion of others. However, from the point of view of a former primary school teacher, I have witnessed first hand the awkwardness of a name deliberately misspelled. A foreign language teacher and a child had an embarrassing stand off about the first letter of the child's name, because the child had a common name that was bizarrely spelled incorrectly. Ask yourself why it is that you wish to spell your child's name incorrectly. Do you want for them to stand out? Do you wish to be individual? Do you wish for these things for them or for yourself? In a professional setting, I personally am very grateful for a normal name. You aren't just naming a baby. You're naming a person with a future.
Firstly why would a teacher have a stand off with a child? Not very professional imo?

I used to work in nurseries/schools before I went to uni and working with the general public and the amount of names I've come across not once has a name spelt differently made me think any differently of the person of their parents, that view just blows my mind.

I love the name Pollie and love the way the ie is written down and I believe that if a person came across this name they wouldn't have trouble to pronounce it or read it as it looks just like 'Polly' I feel like we live in a diverse country that has so many cultures that the spelling of 'Pollie' wouldn't hinder or embarrass a child and wouldn't prevent her from becoming anything she wanted to be?
My opinion hasn't changed slightly and like I said I like this spelling more as it shows individualism nothing wrong with that Smile just my opinion anywayyyy

@11112222

Interested about the spelling thing. We have a Tillie. Her full name is Natalie, hence the 'ie' spelling of Tillie. We liked the name Tilly/Tillie but not Matilda. Is this deemed acceptable or not?? Do we look illiterate?
To me illiterate wouldn't cross my mind, or lower class or uneducated! love the name Tillie and understand why you went with Tillie and not Tilly, lovely name Smile

@Kanaloa

Also, while I really like Jackson, it is very popular. Spelling it wrongly doesn’t make it less popular if you see what I mean? Like when you shout Jaxson at soft play and another parent shouts their Jackson, it will still be two Jacksons? Or at school it will still be Jackson A and Jaxson B because they’re still the same name.

If you’re looking for unusual, I would choose a less common name rather than misspell a popular name.

No not looking for anything usual and we 100% know the name would be pronounced the same we just prefer this way of spelling Smile

@PriceEmUp

I have a Mabel, I chose it because it was the one old fashioned name that hadn’t quite been brought back yet.. and now I see a lot of Mabel’s😂 I still love it I just wanted something that wasn’t in every single classroom and now I think it will be 😁
It's one of them names that is so different and nice though even if she is one of a few Mabels, she has a beautiful name Smile

@FestiveStuffing

I don't understand why your DM would be so offended by 'Jemma?'

Not offended, just felt a bit sorry for the person in question because she presumed the name had been misspelled in error.

I bet Jemma loved it, I have never ever ever felt sorry for someone because of there name, that idea just seems wild to me Blush

@florascotia2

You'll see that there are a couple of spelling mistakes in my post above. I was obviously typing too quickly. When we read them, they can make us stop, and lose concentration. Names spelled very unusually can have the same effect.
hahah this isn't such a bad thing, there isn't a wrong/right way of spelling a name as names are unique to that specific person, I've never believed in the phonic sounding of names ie a lot of names Haylee, Hayleigh, Hayley, Hailee all different spellings but share the same pronunciation Smile
