Just seen it mentioned on here in passing and it struck me as beautiful.

What are your thoughts on Muriel?

I think it has a pretty sound.

But . . .

Muriel in Muriel's wedding changed her name to Mariel.

The only Muriel I know in real life changed her name to something more modern sounding. I think she is around 80. She is the only person I know to change her first name.

PinkBuffalo · 14/12/2020 17:36

I love it it as my granny’s name
I think it means bright sea which is beautiful 🙂

joneybabe · 14/12/2020 17:33

Reminds me of the goat from Animal Farm Grin

Firebird83 · 13/12/2020 23:38

I prefer Mariel, Marielle or Mariella

FawnDrench · 13/12/2020 16:19

I once heard that someone who was called Muriel had been nicknamed Moo. Which I don't like at all.
Sorry it's not for me.

VenusClapTrap · 13/12/2020 15:04

I like it. But ‘You’re terrible Muriel’ would wear pretty thin pretty quickly.

ILikeStrongTea · 13/12/2020 14:16

Mariella?

Muriel is just so dowdy.

MerchantOfVenom · 13/12/2020 04:46

Yes, as literally everyone else’s has said, ‘you’re terrible Muriel’.

Can I interest you in Marielle?

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 13/12/2020 04:42

My very lovely grandmother was called Muriel. It’s still a hideous name.

CockleburIck · 13/12/2020 04:37

Horrible. Sounds like the name for a cow.

PattyPan · 13/12/2020 00:22

I don’t like it. I thought I didn’t like the mur sound/look but I don’t like Meriel or Mariel either so I don’t know what it is!

DramaAlpaca · 13/12/2020 00:16

It's a very dreary, dowdy, unattractive sounding and looking name to me.

I know a lovely Muriel, she has a very sunny disposition which doesn't match my perception of her name at all.

It also makes me think of Hilda Ogden in Coronation Street years ago, with the mural on her wall that she always called her 'murial' Grin

ILikeStrongTea · 12/12/2020 21:25

No it’s awful.

lockedownloretta · 12/12/2020 21:00

You're terrible Muriel!!

Yika · 12/12/2020 20:58

I actually think it's lovely. Beautiful meaning and relatively unusual these days. Meriel is even nicer.

ImAllOut · 12/12/2020 20:49

Chandler Muriel Bing.

MooseBreath · 12/12/2020 20:48

Muriel is my grandmother's name. I don't like it.

rc22 · 12/12/2020 20:39

I had a great aunt called Muriel. She was known as Mu or Mumu.

LilacSloth · 12/12/2020 20:32

Really, really dislike Muriel. Meriel is beautiful 😍

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 12/12/2020 20:28

It's quite dated and sounds and looks horrible to me, sorry OP. As pp mentioned just a small letter change - to Meriel (if you want to keep the Irish origin and meaning) or the more modern European Mariel (like Hemingway) makes a big difference and makes it much more attractive and useable.

KristinaJup · 12/12/2020 19:52

Much, much prefer Meriel.

Absolutely adore the meaning "of the bright sea" - couldn't think of a lovlier meaning.

florascotia2 · 12/12/2020 19:39

Really nice meaning. (Bright Sea)
I once met a lovely French student with that name.
Meriel an ancient and equally nice version.

CantStopEatingPie · 12/12/2020 19:32

It's ok.

I do prefer:

Meriel
Merla
Marina
Merryn
Meryl
Merle
Morwenna

Though :)

IndieRo · 12/12/2020 19:06

Definately no, it's horrid

Clareypoo · 12/12/2020 19:01

Urgh no. Sorry.
Though I don't like the Elsie/Margot old lady name phase that we're in right now.
