I would love opinions on our girls names. We still aren't completely sure any of them are the right one but I think I'm at the point where I can't think of any more names!

Agatha
Dorothy
Meredith
Winifred
Gwendolyn
Daphne
Polly
Cora
Tessa
Roberta

Agatha - ugly, sorry.
Dorothy - dated. Dotty as a nickname is sweet
Meredith - very old and posh man’s name.
Winifred - Winnie the Pooh and poo poo nick names at school
Gwendolyn - ugly name
Daphne - dated and dowdy
Polly - ok
Cora - ok
Tessa - ruined once the banks used it, used to be a lovely name.
Roberta - dated.
Alberta - nice. Bertie is cute

Old fashioned names which are also lovely IMO:
Clementine/clemency - Clemmie
Constance - Connie
Florence
Biblical names (certainly old):
Eden
Shiloh
Talitha
Phoebe
Naomi
Martha

Agatha- No, such a harsh name

Dorothy- I love it but the wizard of oz and people potentially saying things like 'friend of Dorothy' put me off.

Meredith- Love this

Winifred- No

Gwendolyn- No

Daphne- No

Polly- No

Cora- not the worst but not a massive fan

Tessa- No

Roberta- god no

grandmasterstitch · 13/12/2020 12:40

Ah ok we're not Welsh so maybe won't go for that spelling. I like Gwendoline but DH said that makes it sound like a cleaning product 🙄

Absolutely love them all, they are right in my street!

Apart from Cora and Roberta, don't like those

MikeUniformMike · 13/12/2020 11:51

Meredydd is pronounced Merr-ED-ith, ith as in 'with' or 'dither'.

MikeUniformMike · 13/12/2020 11:22

Gwendolen is welsh and pronounced differently from Gwendolyn.
Gwen -DOL-enn not GWEN-duh-lyn

Both Gwendolyn and Meredith are anglicised versions of welsh names -Gwendolen and Meredydd. Meredydd is a boy's name.

I think the more I look the more Gwendolyn (maybe spell it Gwendolen?) and Winifred appeal. I love Dorothy but I expect it'll be really popular which isn't the end of the world but with such a lovely name it would be a shame if she was one of several in her class

Tessa and Cora are lovely, fairly classic and very useable.

Agatha and Winifred are guilty pleasure names - I like them but they still scream "old- lady" to me, so I don't think I'd be brave enough to use them personally.

Gwendolyn, Daphne, Meredith and Polly are all okay, just not my taste. I don't like Dorothy or Roberta - too dated for me.

Firebird83 · 13/12/2020 00:11

Daphne or Roberta. Great names!

Tambourina · 12/12/2020 22:56

Agatha - love, also Agnes
Dorothy - no
Meredith - my favourite
Winifred - maybe
Gwendolyn - no
Daphne - no
Polly - no
Cora - love
Tessa - nice
Roberta - love

RosesAndHellebores · 12/12/2020 22:46

With Gwendolyn and Meredith on your list, do you have a Welsh connection?

Love Daphne. Also a pp's suggestion of Isolde. I think I prefer Agnes to Agatha.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/12/2020 22:35

Thomasina.
Alfreda.
Georgiana
Francine

OppsUpsSide · 12/12/2020 20:55

I love Agatha!

JanewaysBun · 12/12/2020 20:54
@Chilldonaldchill Gwendolyn Mary from Malory Towers is one of the reasons I'm not totally sold. DH hasn't read them so doesn't have that connection
Looking back on these as an adult the others were far worse to gwendoline than she was to them! They were horrible stuck up bullies, she was a little bombastic but the others were awful.to her so defo not a reason to can the name!

JanewaysBun · 12/12/2020 20:51

Agatha - love, wish I was brave enough to use
Dorothy - like a lot
Meredith - love and would use
Winifred - don't like but don't hate
Gwendolyn - ok, could be very very cool
Daphne - you can't have this, this is my imaginary DC name that DH would never let me use 😭😭😭 🤣
Polly - like, almost used
Cora - nice
Tessa - ok but nothing special
Roberta - as above

LilacSloth · 12/12/2020 20:43

The only name on your list I like is Meredith.

RainbowsAndFrogs · 12/12/2020 20:26

Out of those, polly

SugarCanes · 12/12/2020 20:08

I like Tessa

PortalooSunset · 12/12/2020 19:41

I wanted a Dorothy (but only had boys) so that goes to the top of your list for me. Roberta sounds like 'we wanted a boy' to me.
Names that were also on our list were Sophie, Agatha, Edith, Florence, Daisy and Mabel but Dorothy was my number one!

CatRamsey · 12/12/2020 19:31

Cora is my favourite of those by a mile. I do like Tessa and Dorothy too.

Whenwillow · 12/12/2020 18:31

I love the return of all the older names! The only one on there I don't like is Meredith. Just a bit of a mouthful. My favourites are Dorothy and Polly I think. I'd love to have had an Agnes. Gwendolyn reminds me of the Malory Towers books too.
How about Darrell instead 😂

OneKeyAtATime · 12/12/2020 18:26

Not keen on Meredith, Roberta and cora but like the rest

17caterpillars1mouse · 12/12/2020 18:14

Agatha - love it and love nn Aggie. I also love Agnes which may suit your tastes

Dorothy - lovely, though slightly prefer Dorothea

Meredith - love it

Winifred - really nice. Love Winnie or Freddie on a girl

Gwendolyn - not my favourite, I find it a bit clunky but nice enough. Jocelyn has a similar feel

Daphne - not a fan at all, my least favourite of your names

Polly - pretty but not sure I'd want to be called Polly

Cora - I'm not a fan. I've met a few baby Cora's and it just never feels right

Tessa - lovely

Roberta - lovely. Love Bobbie, though not Robbie. Albert a has a similar feel
