Bessie?

Currently 14 weeks with Dc3.
DC1 for my partner.
We'd like to chose a name that means something. My Dgran was Elizabeth but was called Bessie all her life?

What are peoples thoughts on it? Could either be a first name or a middle name?

I think it's cute, and I don't think of the things other posters said. If this is for first name I'd probably go Elizabeth officially or some other derivative though and use Bessie as a nickname, and there are other nicknames from Elizabeth that she could use depending on what she likes throughout her life. Or you could just put Bessie as a middle name.

And admittedly my love of Bess may be entirely due to the Tom Hardy/Anne-Marie Duff version of Elizabeth I.

I absolutely love Bess as a short form of Elizabeth. Bessie less so. I hear Frank Spencer type connotations (even though I know it was “ooh Betty”).

I’m afraid it conjures up an image of a thick-set, middle aged, farmer’s wife. Not much sex appeal. On the other hand, I imagine Bessie would have a great sense of humour, and a very kind nature. I can’t imagine a spiteful, horrid Bessie. Bess could sound more sophisticated, and would still be a nod to your gran.

I like it for a little girl, I would go for Elizabeth though with Bessie as a pet name.

Aunt bessies yorkshire puds. Or I think Bossie Bessie. Much prefer Elizabeth.

If you love it you should use it. It only makes me think of frozen Yorkshire puddings though
