We've narrowed our names down to the ones below but would love to hear others' opinions. We have a three syllable Irish surname beginning with D.

Gabe/Gabriel ( favourite)
Harris ( love this but I know there are loads of boys names Harry)
Rory ( love but will sound v Irish with surname)
Kellan ( husband loves, I worry people might hear 'Kevin')
Leo (a favourite)
Alex
Eric ( we loved Erica for a girl but not sure if Eric will have old man connotations)

If you like Kellan you might like Cillian/Killian or Caelan which I think are slightly more used but definitely not popular.

Sausagedog1 · 03/12/2020 14:23

I have a Rory and it's not overly popular. It's ranked 46, whereas Leo for example is ranked 6.
I love Gabriel, think it's beautiful but wasn't 100% sure a boy would like to have it so didn't choose it myself, not sure why, I think DH put me off it! (Like every other name)
Don't like Harris, Harry is much nicer.
Not that keen in Eric, very unusual on a baby these days!
Love Kellan! Unusual but cool.
Leo - lovely but very very popular.
Alex is a bit dull in comparison to your other choices.

joystir59 · 02/12/2020 05:59

Gabriel is beautiful. Rory and Alex strong, and I'm not keen on your other ideas.

Chilldonaldchill · 01/12/2020 23:18

Gabriel.
I know quite a few but I really love it.

DramaAlpaca · 01/12/2020 23:03

What a lovely nice list. Most unusually I like all of them.

My favourite is Rory, least favourite is Eric - I prefer it spelled Erik.

user1493494961 · 01/12/2020 22:45

Gabriel is lovely, dislike Harris (surname) and Kellan (sounds made up).

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 01/12/2020 20:39

Gabriel is lovely, traditional but not too popular and a nice sound - so that would be my choice .
Alex is okay but only as a nn for classic Alexander (too unisex as a given name for me).
Leo is nice but too popular for me.
Eric (or Erik) has a cool Scandi/Viking feel to me, but some people do find it dated in this country unfortunately.
Rory feels like it's becoming trendy (but maybe it's more classic in Scotland and Ireland?)
Not keen on Harris (too surname).
With the unusual Kellan (or Kellen), I think people could hear Kelly as much as Kevin, so it's not my taste.

TrixieHeliotrope · 01/12/2020 16:09

Gabe/Gabriel - Gabriel's better in my opinion
Harris - nice, much better than Harry
Rory - alright, nothing wrong with sounding Irish
Kellan nice
Leo - quite nice, would be better as Leonardo
Alex - prefer Alexander
Eric - meh

mistermagpie · 01/12/2020 16:04

I love Gabriel, such a lovely name. I know a few Harris's (I live in Scotland) and none of them ever get called Harry.

Beachy10 · 01/12/2020 15:29

@Awwlookatmybabyspider oops I meant my MIL.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/12/2020 15:19

His MIL criticized the name (so your mum)Confused. Anyway that's not really point. Whoever mum it was they've had their day naming their kids.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 01/12/2020 15:00

Don’t let that put you off, people will have opinions on all of them x

Beachy10 · 01/12/2020 14:50

Thanks everyone. Gabriel was one that both my and DH agreed on but then his MIL criticised it and it made me waver. I know...he should never have shared it with her.

Gabriel 100%
Love it, on my boys list too

Eric good too

JemimaTiggywinkle · 01/12/2020 12:44

I like: Gabriel, Rory and Eric.

Personally don’t like Harris because I don’t like surnames as first names, but of course a lot of people do.

If you’re just using Alex, he could spend his whole life explaining that no, his full name is not Alexander.

I know a Kellan.. his family call him “Kelly” quite often... I don’t love it. Prefer Stellan, but could be a bit out there assuming you aren’t Scandinavian.

VenusClapTrap · 01/12/2020 12:36

Eric!

LarkDescending · 01/12/2020 12:30

I like Rory and Leo.

If you like both Alex and Eric, how about Alec?

diplodocusinermine · 01/12/2020 12:23

Like Gabriel, Alex but would probably use Alexander, and Eric but would spell Erik. Don't dislike the others though.

Beachy10 · 01/12/2020 12:17

@Awwlookatmybabyspider it's definitely not popular where I live.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/12/2020 11:38

Gabriel (Gabe) is far from unusual. Im falling over them

Beachy10 · 01/12/2020 11:30

I've always loved Rory and even put off naming my dog that incase we wanted the name for a baby. I hadn't realised it was so popular now. I'd rather a name that isn't very common

Nell96 · 01/12/2020 11:10

Gabe/Gabriel - quite like the full name, not keen on Gabe. Possibly overly religious, if that bothers you?
Harris - really like
Rory - really like, though seems to be getting popular at the moment
Kellan - never heard of it before, but quite like it
Leo - like as a nn
Alex - bit dull
Eric - not keen

ThirdTimeLuckyIHope · 01/12/2020 10:59

I love Eric that would be my choice

Bearcub01 · 01/12/2020 09:53

Gabe is quite cool and unusual!
I love Rory, it’s on my list but OH keeps dismissing it! Love Leo and Alex too.

Chickenuggets · 01/12/2020 09:35

Gabriel!
