Ernie for me is either a Muppet on Sesame Street or a Benny Hill novelty song. Albie is the best of the three, but I’m not keen.

SaffieSoph · 01/12/2020 19:47

Love Ernie!

CosyQueen · 01/12/2020 10:00

Love Ernie, not keen on the other two.

MikeUniformMike · 01/12/2020 09:44

Arnie? Arnold is a strong sounding name. Or Norman?

Orphlids · 01/12/2020 00:55

I think people have turned to Albie because all the other boys’ names ending in an ‘ee’ sound were suddenly everywhere (Alfie, Charlie, Ronnie, Reggie, Archie etc). Unfortunately, little Albies are now ten a penny too. Ernie hasn’t yet reached that level of popularity, but will probably be next. I’ve got to say, I wouldn’t want to be a grown man named Ernie or Alby. They’re not very sexy, are they? Cute for a three year old perhaps, but I don’t know many forty year old men who’d want to be considered cute.

Archie I admit I quite like, as I think it escapes the ‘cute’ category. I imagine an adult Archie as extremely wealthy and owning huge tracts of land. Striding about his acres in his plus fours. If he didn’t, I think I’d be pretty disappointed.

BackforGood · 30/11/2020 22:16

If I had to use any of them, I'd give the child the full name, so there were options for them as they go through life.

Albert, Earnest and Archibald are from an era that has gone full circle to now be fashionable again, though I'm not particularly keen.

BigusBumus · 30/11/2020 21:39

They are all hideous.

pilates · 30/11/2020 21:37

I only like Albert, nn Albie

Catwoman1985 · 30/11/2020 21:30

I don't particularly like any of them, though I know they are very popular names at the moment. Sorry.

YakkityYakYakYak · 30/11/2020 21:22

Archie is the only one I like to be honest, but I think Archie is a bit overdone now

Rosesaresweet · 30/11/2020 21:18

Alby, Archie and Ernie sound like cute names for hamsters. I'm really not a fan of such twee nicknames for a boy/teen/man.

Felixfrank · 30/11/2020 20:46

I do not actually no one Archie so I’m obviously in the minority.
Albie is more popular where I live

Iloveknockknockjokes · 30/11/2020 20:43

Alby love
Ernie just doesn't sound nice
Archie v common

Felixfrank · 30/11/2020 20:41

What about when he’s 50?!

That is ridiculous Archie is an old name, and no for all the full names snobs on MN, not Archibald, just plain old Archie.

I love Ernie and can guarantee I am far from a “chav”

Iwasonceabrownie · 30/11/2020 19:01

Please don't saddle a child with Ernie. Just awful, Ernie the fastest milkman in the West, song by Benny Hill.

ThirdTimeLuckyIHope · 30/11/2020 18:50

I think Ernie is super cute 🥰

TrixieHeliotrope · 30/11/2020 18:49

Brilliant!

MikeUniformMike · 30/11/2020 15:42

I don't like any of them although they'd be ok for a puppy.

DappledThings · 30/11/2020 15:22

Same as everyone else, they're all ok as nicknames although don't love any of them but awful as full names.

August20 · 29/11/2020 04:37

They all sound like diminutives. Lovely as nicknames but wouldn't use any as a full name.

MercyBodle · 29/11/2020 04:34

I love Alby ( I like this spelling best) and Archie.

DramaAlpaca · 29/11/2020 00:52

I dislike all of them equally intensely.

emilybrontescorsett · 29/11/2020 00:01

All a bit nicknamey to me. I think Archie is the most grown up.

TH22 · 28/11/2020 23:56

All horrible and chavvy. Sorry!

Brighterthansunflowers · 28/11/2020 23:44

Overly twee nicknames, I especially don’t like the spelling of Alby

I don’t like Ernest or Archibald either though tbh! Albert is the least worst

Arthur or Frederick have a similar feel but much nicer and you can use the twee nickname while he’s little but still have a proper name for when he grows out of cutesy nicknames
