Lily?

Ellen35 · 26/11/2020 14:43

So I've posted quite a few names on here, but still no nearer Confused
Me and DH both liked Elsie to begin with, but all the negative comments about it being twee etc have put me off slightly.
I liked Lucy but DH won't agree to that one as mil has a dog named Lucy and he doesn't like Lucinda as an alternative.
Considered Isabel but just not sure.
I like Rosie but one of my best friends is using that if she has a girl (although she's not ttc for a couple of years) still - she would disown me
So now I'm considering Lily which I think has a similar feel to Elsie, Rosie and Lucy. It's simple, pretty and I think it goes with brother William. What are your thoughts?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Ruby's nice. Again it's nicer than all your other choices imo, except Lily.

Weirdly, the lovely adult Lily I mentioned before has a dd called Ruby!

I don't understand vetoing baby names you genuinely like because of a dog, but Holly isnt as classy as Ruby or Lily imo.

How about Emma?

Ellen35 · 27/11/2020 07:38

DH does love Ruby but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the feedback ... I was waiting for someone to pick up on Lily/Billy. We've never called William Billy and never will and nobody else does, he's just known as William. So for me the Lily/Billy thing isn't an issue because that's not his name.
Thank you for the other suggestions...
Holly, same as Lucy, his sister has a dog Holly
Emily, one of my best friends has a toddler called Emily
Alice is the name of another close friend
Sophie - DH doesn't like
Rose- close friend would also go mad if use either Rose/Rosie
Anna- I don't love it and it doesn't go with our surname which has an 'a" sound stressed in it

Lily is lovely- yes popular but it’s classic, sweet and girly without being twee.

I also like-

Ruby
Alice
Anna
Holly

FolkSongSweet · 27/11/2020 06:13

Lily and Billy/Willy...I don’t think you can. It’s a nice enough name but really common and a bit boring - I prefer your other choices!

MercyBodle · 27/11/2020 03:59

Both Lily and Elsie are lovely. Choose the one you like best - not which one MN likes best.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/11/2020 01:45

Lily is very pretty and on the surface seems to match William (both currently popular classic sounding names). But as pp have pointed out - the sounds are very similar (especially if he ever gets called Billy, or they get shortened Will and Lil).

I'd stick with the lovely, elegant Isabel personally. But other options - could you use Rose instead of Rosie? (Rose fits better with William anyway), or if you like Lily, what about Emily? (it's similar sounding but clashes less with William). Or the more popular classic Sophie instead of Lucy?

Nell96 · 26/11/2020 23:34

I like Lily. I prefer it to Elsie, but I also worry about the pairing with William, for the reasons mentioned by pp. How about Lila or Leila?

DramaAlpaca · 26/11/2020 23:06

I adore Lily, it's so simple and pretty. I don't think it sounds great with William though. Sorry.

Pudding01 · 26/11/2020 23:03

I was a fan of Elsie BTW Smile

Pudding01 · 26/11/2020 23:03

Lily is a beautiful classic name ❤

However the child in me said "Willy and Lily"!

Doesn't stop me liking it though Flowers

DariaMorgendorffer · 26/11/2020 22:32

Lily is beautiful name

starrynight19 · 26/11/2020 22:29

Love both Lily and Elsie

DeeandraReynolds · 26/11/2020 22:27

Right, this is a totally random suggestion, but it popped into my head for some reason as a name to go with William. What do you think of Anna?

mamablondie33 · 26/11/2020 22:06

@ThroughThickAndThin01 I thought the same! Lily is lovely but not with William. Can see why you’re in two minds about Elsie, it’s not my cup of tea.

I like Isabel best from your suggestions. It has the same timeless simplicity as Lily.

DuzzyFuck · 26/11/2020 19:05

I like Lily as it's a family name for me, but I also love Elsie!

DeeandraReynolds · 26/11/2020 19:04

Oh bollocks yes, Bill and Lil... or even Will and Lil.

I went to school in NI and just remembered that Orange Lilies are something I heard mentioned re the Orange Order and obviously William of Orange. So if you have any ties to that part of the world, that might also be an issue. My family are all from the other side, as it were, so if even I heard it, it must be quite famous.

Jattjewd · 26/11/2020 18:58

Exactly what @MikeUniformMike said. William can't go by Billy when he's older if his sister is called Lily. Even William and Lily are too similar-sounding for my liking.

All the other names you listed go nicely with William, especially Elsie.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/11/2020 18:58

Wills and Lils

I love Lily but wouldn’t put it with William.

Daisy or Maisie?

MikeUniformMike · 26/11/2020 18:45

Billy and Lily

Britannah · 26/11/2020 18:37

Lily is so pretty (although to me Lucy still has the edge if DH changes his mind!) I also really really like Lillia - shame about the name Rosie and your friend. I just don’t think people can really claim names before they have a baby. She may never even have a little girl! X

Bvop · 26/11/2020 17:20

I think Elsie is lovely, and can be short for Elspeth which is also great. I also like Lily. Nowt wrong with your name choices Smile

june2007 · 26/11/2020 17:19

How abut Elizabeth then she could be Elsie or Lily.?

Felixfrank · 26/11/2020 17:13

@Ellen35

Do not let comments on here put you off.. Elsie is such a lovely name, it’s my favourite for a little girl! Not sure how people can say Elsie is a twee name my friends nana is Elsie and she is 100 it’s just a solid name.
Lily is also lovely though!

june2007 · 26/11/2020 17:06

I think Lilly is a bit meh. It,s ppopular but not too popular it,s neither here not there really.
