Lily?

So I've posted quite a few names on here, but still no nearer Confused
Me and DH both liked Elsie to begin with, but all the negative comments about it being twee etc have put me off slightly.
I liked Lucy but DH won't agree to that one as mil has a dog named Lucy and he doesn't like Lucinda as an alternative.
Considered Isabel but just not sure.
I like Rosie but one of my best friends is using that if she has a girl (although she's not ttc for a couple of years) still - she would disown me
So now I'm considering Lily which I think has a similar feel to Elsie, Rosie and Lucy. It's simple, pretty and I think it goes with brother William. What are your thoughts?

Lily is much nicer than Elsie. I don't think Elsie is twee - just kind of ugly and old lady-ish. What about Elise?

I also think Sadie is nice if you like the ie ending

TheNanny23 · 29/11/2020 00:15

I think Lily is lovely but also share doubts about sibling match.

Alice? Clara? Cora? Helena? Nancy? Allegra (Allie) ? Flora? Pearl?

I think Elsie Victoria is nice.
Is it my favourite name ever? No
Is it a perfectly pleasant sounding name which she can take through all arenas of life? Yes

gottakeeponmovin · 28/11/2020 12:38

I love Lily but not with William

Enko · 28/11/2020 11:16

I dont like William and Lily together think Elise is nicer (or Elisa) really like Ruby with William so team dh here

AltJ · 28/11/2020 11:03

Lily is an absolutely beautiful name. Timeless, like William.

I'd go for it.

The person who runs Royalty Soaps (In the US, a luxury soap company) has a Lily and a William, and I always think what lovely names.

NoNarniaBecauseLipstick · 27/11/2020 21:37

Eleanor?
Violet?
Iris?
Juliet

ILikeStrongTea · 27/11/2020 16:56

I really like Lily bit it is massively popular especially when paired with the default middle names for every girl currently Rose/Grace/May.

Your DS may be a William now but he won’t be when he’s a teenager. He’ll be a Will.

Duckwit · 27/11/2020 16:11

I love the name Lily and its nowhere near as popular as it was 10 years ago (memories of teaching classes packed with Lily/Lillie/Lily-Rose/Lily-Mae etc!)

Please make sure you spell it Lily though, not Lillie or Lilly (just, why?!)

MikeUniformMike · 27/11/2020 16:07

OP, you will get comments, but just brush them off with 'They happened to be the names we like best'

Even if you had something like Finley and Daisy, or Harriet and Charlotte, or Georgia and Louisa, someone would make some remark about them 'rhyming'.

You might get the odd joke for William and Harriet, but I know someone with a William and Harry Smile.

Firebird83 · 27/11/2020 15:39

William and Lily is too much “lil”

VenusClapTrap · 27/11/2020 15:08

William and Lily is a tongue twister. I really wouldn’t.

Elsie is lovely. Especially when short for Elspeth.

DeeandraReynolds · 27/11/2020 15:04

I also knew sisters called Mel and Mel! Melissa and Melanie. They thought it was hilarious.

MikeUniformMike · 27/11/2020 14:42

Will and Phil have other siblings and were William and Philip as children.
I have mentioned before that I know siblings called John and Jane, but they have other siblings too.

If you have DC3, Philip, Philippa, Jill, Gillian or Gilbert might be names to consider Smile

DeeandraReynolds · 27/11/2020 14:37

Agree with Mike. Just use it! Yes, Will and Lil, but really, how often will they get called that? They aren't going to be joined at the hip. William and Lily is lovely together. It's also your nicest choice imo.

midsomermurderess · 27/11/2020 14:03

It's lovely. I know people with a Lily and an Honor.

MikeUniformMike · 27/11/2020 13:59

Use it. I know two brothers called Will and Phil, and it's not really an issue.

Ellen35 · 27/11/2020 13:56

Aaargh, in such a quandary and opinion seems really split over the William and Lily sibset. I thought they were lovely together.
Thanks for suggestions. I'm just not keen on Daisy.

I have a Lily. I've always been in love with the name and it fits dd perfectly XX

Luckymummy123 · 27/11/2020 12:09

My two DCs have similar sounding names and it's never been a problem.
Lily is lovely imo.
How about Elizabeth, could be shortened to Elsie or Lizzie?

MotherOfCrocodiles · 27/11/2020 12:08

If I tried to say 'Lily and William' quickly I would accientally say willy. Otherwise I think it's a lovely name.

Carrotcakey · 27/11/2020 12:00

My grandparents were William and Lillie and I never ever even thought about them being William and Lillian, Bill and Lil, Billy and Lillie! They were William and Lillie always.

MikeUniformMike · 27/11/2020 11:56

William will be Will when he is older. I can't think of any adult William I know who isn't Will or Bill, and Lily will be Lil.

GU24Mum · 27/11/2020 08:24

I wouldn't ditch a name choice just because a friend has used it unless perhaps it's your best friend in the world who you see very regularly and whose child is the same age as yours and it's an unusual name - if not, go for it.

There are quite a few Lilys who are now mid to late teens - one of my DC is in sixth form and always had some in her class/year group but you don't hear it so much now.

What about Daisy if you're looking for something similar to Lily bit sounding more different from William.
