For a Muslim baby girl? We're totally secular, grandparents are culturally more religious.

Will we raise too many eyebrows?

Her sister is Zara.

Priya is such a gorgeous name. I would assume she would probably be Hindu though.

Priya is a lovely name. It is a very obvious hindu name, so as a muslim I wouldn’t choose it.

I would guess she was indian or half-indian.

Priya is beautiful. I think you can borrow names from different cultures as much as you like.

Worth considering that if the family is from the Indian subcontinent they would have been Hindu a few hundred years ago anyway until conversion, so it a sense it's just as much 'your' name as any other Indian's. Obviously not the case if you are middle eastern etc.

It’s a gorgeous name. I knew one at uni who dressed in a sort of 1950s convent girl style with straw hat and everything. She had the most beautiful hair and was kind and funny.

It's a gorgeous name. Unfortunately, for someone white, it'd probably be seen as cultural appropriation to use it, or I'd choose it (were I of childbearing age!)

I can be no help with your dilemma though. Presumably, Muslim posters are more use to you on that.

My dd has a friend called Priya. She's from a Hindu family.
I don't see how it would cause a problem to anyone other than (potentially) your family to use a name from a different religious origin.

If you think it would be an issue you know a decent Arabic speaker you can see if there are any names that are phonetically similar and use that

"Bariya" is close-ish.

Obviously I've no idea how muslim grandparents would react to this choice but, it goes beautifully with Zara imo.

From my limited knowledge, it is a traditional Hindu girl’s name which originates from the root word love (as in the Pri part). It is a beautiful name and though it may sound like a car name to those who don’t know any better, there are lots of people who will appreciate it as a beautiful, traditional name. I mean, Sally probably wouldn’t go down well in India, as it is usually followed with an insult!
Meaning is an important part of a child’s name in Islam so if you are happy with this go ahead but be prepared for lots of questions. FYI I am a pretty secular Indian Muslim and I love the names Saagar and Pavan.

It’s typically a Hindu name. If you’re not practising Muslim then I guess it’s fine to use.

Priya is lovely! I think Roisin Ingle an Irish Journalist (sort of) called her daughter this. Her husband is also white not from India, so they have no reason other than they liked the name. I remember thinking, wow, bit strange appropriating an Indian name when I heard it first but it is a very pretty name and actually a lot of people have a lot of knowledge of Indian culture so why not?!

It’s a lovely name and pretty well known, I can’t imagine anybody in real life thinking it’s a car name. I’m afraid I don’t know enough about the cultural issues to comment on those.

I think OP is saying child is Muslim but the name isn't. (Hindu, I think). I'm afraid I don't know if this is an issue, who do you think it might cause problems with/for?
