Polly?

DC2 is due tomorrow (no sign of movement yet though, unfortunately). We don’t know the sex, but if it’s a girl we had 99% settled on Polly Frances. Maybe I’ve had too much time to think about it now, but I’m worried Polly will blend into a sea of Poppy/Holly etc, though always loved it as I think it’s got a bit more about it.

Back up option is Lucy, but not totally sure. And I love Penny, but DD1 is Annie and the two are a bit rhymey together.

If it’s a boy it’ll be Rory Arthur. That just feels right, even though I know Rory is very popular atm.

Can anyone either convince me that Polly is or isn’t the way to go/suggest anything similar?

My 5 year old niece is Polly and she's a gorgeous livsly wee girl .
Polly Frances is lovely and not twee at all.

@FluffyEggsontoast still waiting!

Poppy is so lovely @MaryShelley1818 you should stick with it for sure.

@Anni3getyourgun has Polly arrived yet?

CharitySchmarity · 24/11/2020 20:56

I like both Polly and Lucy, probably like Lucy slightly more in absolute terms, but I think Polly would go especially well with Annie.

Chimbleys · 23/11/2020 01:12

Polly was on my girls list but we're having a boy. Strong, chic and vintage without being fusty. Polly Frances is so lovely.

PoodleMoth · 22/11/2020 17:19

Polly is lovely!

Nimello · 22/11/2020 17:15

Good decision, OP. Polly Frances is a lovely name (and so's Annie!)

Good luck with the birth...

@MaryShelley1818

I love the name Polly Frances, it's gorgeous.

Slightly worried about the negative references to Poppy on here though as we're due a DD in January and that's our current name.

I know a fab, very athletic, very quick-witted Poppy and the name is perfect on her. Really suits.
Anni3getyourgun · 22/11/2020 17:03

@MaryShelley1818 oh, that’s actually really sweet. I think my DD would name the baby Peppa Pig given half the chance, but she’s completely not interested in the impending arrival!

@Anni3getyourgun

Thanks all, you’ve totally convinced me to stick with it. Just waiting for baby to make an appearance now - one day overdue and it’s dragging!

@MaryShelley1818 I know a couple of gorgeous little girls called Poppy, so if you love it, don’t worry!

Aww that's very kind of you xx Tbh it's not mine or DH choice but our little boy who is nearly 3 chose it (possibly Ben and Holly influence) and only refers to the baby as "my Poppy" he's obsessed with her and talks about her non stop. Seems really mean to take it away from him and I know that sounds really silly out loud! Lol.

Hoping your little girl makes her appearance really soon xx

I love Polly. As a PP says, it’s got a bit more to it. And the grown up ones I know are fab. Don’t know any child Pollys (Pollies?!) currently.

MaltedMilk88 · 22/11/2020 15:32

To echo others, love Polly and Polly Frances is just perfect! X

Polly is awesome.
So much nicer than Holly and Molly etc. It feels really fresh and exciting as a name.
I think I've loved it since I read The Magician's Nephew because the Polly in that is strong willed and adventurous.

CosyQueen · 21/11/2020 19:43

I think polly is beautiful!
It’s on my list for if I ever have a girl in the future. I personally don’t think it would be too over used in the current sea of Ava, Eva, Mia, Myah etc

babynamelover · 21/11/2020 19:22

I adore Polly.
I think it's perfect with Annie.
It's much more unexpected than Penny and Lucy is overused.
Polly Frances is darling 😍.

janetmendoza · 21/11/2020 19:11

It's Great!

yikesanotherbooboo · 21/11/2020 18:10

I adore Polly and Frances .

zigaziga · 21/11/2020 18:00

I love love love Polly.

I actually think it’s quite different too in a class full of Evie/ Ava/ Eva/ Isobel / Isabel / Isabella etc etc.

MercyBodle · 21/11/2020 11:45

Polly Frances is delightful, and for me quite distinct from Poppy, Holly etc.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 21/11/2020 01:39

I'm not usually keen on nn's as given names, so while I like Polly best as a nn for Polina (even though it was originally a nn for Mary and Dorothy); Polly is so rarely used now that I think it works as a given name too.

Annie and Polly sound really nice together - a lovely match in style as both are vintage nicknames. Lucy doesn't fit so well imo and Penny is too similar to Annie to me (and Poppy/ Holly too modern). Other old- fashioned style nicknames could also work - like Molly, Nell, Maisie, Sadie, Edie, Effie, Betty, Kitty etc but I like Polly with Annie best.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 21/11/2020 00:45

Absolutely LOVE Polly and don't know any little ones with it! Timeless and brilliant. No rhyme or reason but it makes me think of a strong, kind and funny little girl with just the right level of cheeky and exactly the same personality in a grown up! Polly Frances is perfect.

DramaAlpaca · 21/11/2020 00:40

I love Polly. It's not twee or cutesy despite the 'y' ending, it's vintage and strong. Polly Frances is perfect.

YoniAndGuy · 20/11/2020 16:02

Love it, much stronger than the Poppy/ Evie gang, and much less popular. I think of PJ Harvey. It’s amazing, go for it.

You could make it Polydora on the BC if you feel you need to cover more bases?
