Lottie as nickname for Violet

I don’t think Lottie works as a nickname for violet. Lettie is cute though!

My daughter is known as Lulu. At school, at home, friends/family - everywhere. She is Selina on her BC. You can put a name on her BC and then call her whatever you like day to day. Violet is lovely. And I can see how it could be Lottie. But her known as name doesn't need to be a usual nickname of the name on her BC.

My friend's son is Ben, it's surprising how many lengthen Ben to Benjamin when it isn't his name.
I say go for Lottie. It's a nice name. And people can spell it without having to ask.

Love Lottie and love Charlotte. I’d go for Charlotte. My DD is Elizabeth on birth certificate but everyone has always called her Liza but I’m glad she has a more fancy name too. Bit like getting 2 names for the price of one - I get a surprise when she’s called at the drs surgery. I’ve found at school and nursery they always ask what the prefers name is and always go with that, so had no issues.

Why would you name them one thing on their birth certificate and then call them something else?

My sister named her first child with a long 4 syllable name on the birth certificate and shortened it for every day use to just 1 syllable. You know it is the shortened version ie Lottie for Charlotte. To this day (now in his 20s) never used his long version out loud, just for form filling.

With her second child she realised all the issues of having a different name on the birth certificate so instead just used the shortened version that she liked, ie Lottie.

Why do people cling to this notion that you need a "Sunday" name or a long version? It feels very old fashioned.

I’d use Lottie on the birth certificate. Lots of pet names are now names in their own right now... Nancy, Katy, Betty, Bella...

I really don't understand why it would be a problem to just put the name you actually want to use on the birth certificate.

I would put Lottie on the birth certificate. Maybe go with a longer middle name in case she really objects. Dd is Charlotte a compromise as dh wasn't over keen on Lottie but relented if we had a 'full name' for her. When she gets called Charlotte, it really doesn't feel like her at all.

Just use Lottie on the birth certificate.

It's a perfectly nice name.

My DS has a 'nickname' type of name, it is on his BC, funnily enough one or two people do call him by the longer version of the name, he doesn't mind either way.

Lotte is a name though, isn't it? German? I think it's pronounced the same as Lottie.

Letty would be more likely and it's lovely too.

I'm not a big fan of nns on the BC, but in this case, I'd just put Lottie. If you choose the nn first, then desperately try to find a long name to fit the nn, then it seems to me that the nn is what you really love. Just put Lottie. She'll likely have classmates called some of thr following: Molly, Daisy, Milly, Callie, Polly, Rosie, Posie, Kitty (yes, I've met more than one with Kitty on the BC, not Katherine etc). Lottie is far from out there as a BC name, compared to these^^.

Imo it's really hard to choose what nickname they get anyway. My DC has a long name like Isabel, I called them because I loved the nickname Izzy and everyone calls them Bell. (Not real name) so personally I wouldn't choose Violet unless you love the full name and Vi too.

I wouldn't put lottie in their birth certificate as it's a nickname. I can't see how you get it from Violet tbh, people will assume she's a Charlotte anyway if you call her Lottie.
