Lottie as nickname for Violet

Hi

I really like the name Lottie but am reluctant for that to be her name on the birth certificate as it feels a nickname. I'm not so keen on Charlotte or Carlotta so thought Violet could be a nice 'long version name'. I prefer Lottie than Vi as a nickname.

I know Lettie might be a more natural fit, but I just don't like it as much.

Do you think Lottie is an OK nickname for someone with the full name Violet? Or should I just put Lottie as their main name?

This thread makes me think of Agatha Christie's "A murder is announced" where (spoilers) the whole Lottie/Lettie name thing is very central to the plot!

Rosesaresweet · 24/11/2020 12:59

Violet will become Vi or Vile.

Lottie is a different name altogether and often short for Carlotta, Charlotte etc.

LittleGwyneth · 23/11/2020 13:32

I know a Lottie who is a Violet.

YoniAndGuy · 20/11/2020 16:06

Don’t. She will so likely end up as Vi which is hideous. Never plan a name around a nickname, you don’t get to control it.

picklecustard · 19/11/2020 19:32

I think it’s too much of a stretch. Just put Lottie on the birth certificate, it’s an absolutely fine name in its own right.

Cbeebiesrehab · 19/11/2020 19:30

If you want to use Violet just say from day one: This is Violet, known as Lottie. People will follow your lead. My daughter goes by a name that isn’t the traditional diminutive of her BC name and no one has ever questioned it or called her anything different.

aSofaNearYou · 19/11/2020 10:56

People bang on about the long name thing on MN but I honestly can't imagine any scenario where it will make one jot of difference if her official name is Lottie. Especially when you think about the kind of names that are fashionable and common amongst her generation, she will blend right in.

SunSparkle · 19/11/2020 10:19

Lots of different opinions! I guess we could just put Lottie on the birth certificate. When I think about it I don’t know why I’m so hung up on having a long version name to be honest. I think it’s just something I’ve internalised from somewhere

I would probably just put Lottie on the birth certificate if that's what you want to call her 🤷‍♀️

badacorn · 19/11/2020 10:08

Doesn’t really work IMO. People will assume she is called Charlotte, and you might have to explain it to people a few times, if that doesn’t matter to you then go for it.

finallychangedmyusername · 18/11/2020 18:59

I adore both Violet and Lottie and think that Lottie works fine as a nickname for Violet.

ThirdTimeLuckyIHope · 18/11/2020 18:12

If you really like Lottie I would just put that on the birth certificate I'm not sure why people are so hung up on putting longer names when they aren't going to be used anyway

StripyTigerTail · 18/11/2020 17:09

@thisisnotus

Obviously there aren't any rules, but I am assuming that the op wants a name which would naturally get the nickname Lottie, because that's what she asked you see Smile.

If not, then hell, call her Rebecca or Elizabeth or Alexandra or anything you like and call her Lottie. Might be a wee bit confusing when she starts school but there are no laws against it as you say.

bridgetreilly · 18/11/2020 17:06

Lieselotte could work.

thisisnotus · 18/11/2020 16:59

Why are people so hung up on being able to get from Violet to Lottie? It doesn't matter one bit! There are no laws about nicknames having to bear a resemblance to the real name in everyone's minds 😂

I have a friend who goes by a name that's extremely different to her real name - I can't put it here as it's very, very unusual - a long name in another language. But she has used her "nickname" for education, personal and professional purposes throughout her whole life.

I think you all need to stop making up pretend rules for the OP to stick to.

Firebird83 · 18/11/2020 15:50

Isn’t it usually Lettie/Letty?

VenusClapTrap · 18/11/2020 14:40

Just call her Lottie on the birth certificate.

PucePanther · 18/11/2020 14:25

I don’t see how you could get Lottie from Violet. In any case, be prepared for her to switch to a more edgy nickname like Vi when she’s older.

Zolaanna · 18/11/2020 14:25

I find it a bit bizzare. Like just pluck any name out of the air but call your kid lottie
There is no connection between Violet and Lottie.
Everyone will understandably think her name is Charlotte.

sundowners · 18/11/2020 14:20

Violet is beautiful- don't you dare shorten it to Lottie!!

ivegotthisyeah · 18/11/2020 13:13

I have a Lottie - always loved the name so that's why she was called it & it's on her BC. Hardly no one asks if she's a Charlotte
Call her Lottie if that's the name you like!!

thisisnotus · 18/11/2020 13:05

There's absolutely nothing wrong with having Lottie as a nickname for Violet.

There's also absolutely nothing wrong with having Lottie on the birth certificate.

You do what you think is best.

2Olives1Onion · 18/11/2020 12:21

I think Violet > Lottie is fine. It’s no more out there than traditional diminutives like Catherine > Kitty or James > Jim or Henry > Harry or Margaret > Meg. Assuming you’re in the UK, she’ll have her full name and “known as” on her school paperwork. She may choose another name (or be given one by her peers) later, but that could happen with any name, including Lottie.

Lottie alone is OK too - it’s in the top 100 names for England & Wales so established enough - use whichever you prefer. (Personally, I’d use Violet as the “official” name.)

MercyBodle · 18/11/2020 12:17

I think Lottie works fine as a nickname for Violet.

Nell96 · 18/11/2020 11:32

I would use Violet - it's a beautiful, classic name and she'll have the choice to use that if she prefers when she's older. You can call her whatever nickname you like. Personally I'm not keen on Lottie - it sounds a bit prim to me and very much like a nickname, whereas names such as Katie, Bella, Polly, Molly etc. now feel like names in their own right. I think people will still assume that her full name is Charlotte, whatever you do, but Ottillie would be another, more unusual option.
